    "Dead Men Don't Bowl"
    Recorded September 14, 2019
    For release on September 20, 2019
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
    It's on. Our second episode of Season 4 of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR, and today, we introduce a new concept. Well, we kinda did it last week, but this week, we gave it a name: The Wild Card Round. I like this concept because it gives all the kids who failed to qualify for the stepladder one last chance to grab that last spot in the ladder.
    So today, you'll see the three kids who finished 5th, 6th and 7th in qualifying vie for the final spot in the stepladder finals.
    And as usual, the action is fast and furious once the field is set. I think you'll really enjoy this one. Some familiar faces make their first appearance of the new season on PRODIGY.
    Also on this week's show, we continue our new feature, the PRODIGY Tip of the Week. Look for it immediately following the winner's interview near the end of the show.
    As always, we welcome your comments, but we must insist that you keep your critiques positive. Just remember the mission of PRODIGY BOWLERS TOUR is to "Celebrate Junior Bowling and Elevate Junior Bowlers." Please keep your comments helpful, not hurtful.

    I can tell that Tristan has improved his game. I'm impressed, he's very smooth in his release way to go Tristan on your win, and good job Randy on coaching these kids to help them become better bowlers it's good to see how their game was back when the show first started compared to how their game is now. I mean they all have been improving their game and they seem to get better and better everyday way to go. 👍

    Ok so I don’t know if these rules apply everywhere, but here are some new bowling tournament rules in NY state. You can no longer have a weight hole. All holes in your ball must be occupied by a finger. Lastly, you can’t clean or tap rosin on your ball during a match. If you do, you have to take that ball out and it cannot be brought back out.

    another great video! tomorrow, im bowling in my first Pro Tour Qaulifiers up here in Canada (5 pin) my average isnt the best, but i have been able to bowl against the best, my high game in 5 pin in 360 (5 pin perfect game is 450) its just like 10 pin, but with only 5 pins, and actually a bit harder than 10, as there is a chance you can miss all the pins if you hook it right (not throw it in the gutter) as there is 17 inches inbetween each and every pin. if i bowl in the top 5, ill get free entry into the WCBTour (Western Canadian Bowling Tour, been around since the 70's i think it was). fun fact also, 5 pin bowling used to be on TSN and ESPN years and years ago before it was taken off

    • @chrisreddy8958
      @chrisreddy8958 Před 5 lety

      and if your wondering, in 5 pin, our pins are worth more, the 2 corner pins are worth 2 points each, 2 inner pins are worth 3 points each, and than the middle pin is worth 5 points, for a total of 15 points, and in 5 pin, its not as forgiving for strikes, you have to hit the headpin just perfectly for it be a strike, or it can turn into what they call ACES (so the 2 corner pins are left up, so in 10 pin it would be called the 7/10 split) or a corner pin leave, or a chop off, where the corner pin and the 3 pin is still standing

    I realize that many of today's young bowlers want to be the next Belmonte with this two handed style but someone seriously needs to teach them accuracy and spare ability. Fluffing the ball all over the place is not going to get them nowhere on tour but embarrassment (assuming many want to go on the PBA tour). If there are coaches out there, please get them to the right path. That one kid missed the 10 pin by a mile. Tristin had the best release there - he would do much better on a tour shot if he works on it. With the exception of a couple of errant shots, he attacked the pocket better and picked up most of his spares. Congratulations....

    • @ProdigyBowlersTour
      @ProdigyBowlersTour  Před 5 lety

      First, I don't believe that the matter of two-handed bowling being on the rise has anything at all to do with the importance of spares. Some two-handers are just as accurate as some of the better one-handers. Similarly, there are plenty of one-handers who can't hit the broad side of a barn when it comes to spare shooting. So to conflate the two issues into one is, at best, a stretch.
      As for the importance of spare shooting, you're preaching to the choir. I've never met a coach who doesn't stress the importance of spare shooting. But let's separate for a moment the difference between coaching in a league, where each coach is more or less floating amongst all the kids -- and in some cases, spending more of their time with the little kids to get them started on a good footing -- and the kind of coaching you get in one-on-one paid lessons with someone who is, in effect, "your coach." The coaching you get in a league, while very good in many cases, and certainly far better than no coaching at all, often doesn't get into the nitty-gritty that you can delve into when you're getting one-on-one lessons over a long period of time. That's usually when I would teach "spare SYSTEMS," and get into the very precision-oriented matters of how to convert a variety of specific spares that a player would commonly face. You just don't have the time or the opportunity to get into that when you're floating amongst 40 or 60 kids in a league.
      So while I do get into specific spare shooting issues with kids I coach, there's only so far you can go with kids when you're generalizing in a league setting. But I don't quibble with you as to the importance of it.
      Where I do find some disagreement with you is when you assume that all these kids are intent on becoming pro bowlers. Some may pursue it. Although I suspect many more won't. For starters, it's not a great way to make a lot of money. Only the elite few do really well financially. That alone will scare a lot of people off, and for good reason. But still others won't want to chase that dream simply because of what you have to give up to achieve it (living on the road, etc.). But beyond that, there are lots of ways to earn a living in the bowling business without being a touring pro, and the pursuit of one's love of the game through competition is a logical way to stay close enough to it while you sort out career objectives. Honestly, when I ask a kid, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" I don't really believe that when they're 14, 15, 16 or so, they really need to have an answer TODAY. There's time for them to figure that out as the age up. With that as my basic premise, I find your tone a little harsh.
      Yeah, we get it. Some of the missed spares were not close. And if that kid ends up curing cancer, no one is going to care that he didn't pursue a career as a professional bowler. Honestly, some of these kids have their sights set much higher. But for right now, they enjoy competing at this. I don't think it serves a useful purpose to judge them based solely on whether they measure up to some standard YOU have deemed important. I would submit that it might be better for you to take a wider view of this.
      Spares important, yes. Spares MOST important? Maybe yes, maybe no. Certainly important if you want to win at bowling, though. No argument there.

      @@ProdigyBowlersTour Thanks for the good reply - interesting reading - and I know you agree on some aspects. I do believe spare shooting is essential because in some tough conditions it is what will win you games. I have taught bowlers in the past. One of my ways of teaching is for them to try to find a shot using each arrow per game regardless if the shot is there or not - at least trying to create a pocket. For example - first game - use first arrow - second use second - and so forth. This is a great practice tool used by some PBA players to keep their games healthy. Agree on this? Often your only hope is playing 5th arrow or deeper - this keeps bowlers in line. One of these young bowlers said he brought dozens of balls into the center - that only can confuse you more. I feel that with 4 bowling balls - just 4, you can learn - three different reactive drilled for different actions and a urethane. It gets you tremendously accurate and makes you work hard. Keep up the good work and thanks to your comprehensive reply...

    I had an idea for a format I've seen in the PBA. What if you had the kids qualify as normal (2 games), then the top 3 qualify but only the top seed sits and waits. You have a wild card playoff for the #4 and #5 seeds. Then 2 through 5 seeds bowl a game, low man knocked out, three survivors bowl a game low man out. Then the 2 survivors bowl a match to face the tournament leader.

      Reactive resin bowling balls do lose their hook after a fairly short while. They get "lane shine" on them (if they were dull when new, they start to get shiny). This is normal, although it's annoying, and definitely affects their performance. Yes, abralon pads are a big part of the answer. Also, if you don't clean your ball at the end of every single session, you are not taking proper care of it. And for that matter, if you're not wiping the oil rings off of it BEFORE EVERY SHOT YOU THROW, you're letting the oil that a ball picks up off the lane seep into the microscopic holes in every ball's surface (you can't see or feel them, but if you saw the ball's surface under a microscope, you'd see that it's not smooth at all -- it looks like a jaggedy mountain range with lots of peaks and valleys...and that oil seeps into the valleys). All this adds up to the ball losing performance characteristics over time. And quite often, after a very short period of time. I find that touching up the surface with a little abralon pad action after 10 or 12 games is usually a good idea. And periodically, after, say, 50 or 60 games or so, you'd probably want to give the ball a good deep cleaning. I promise you, if the weather is still warm where you are, if you were to leave one of your reactive resin balls in the trunk of your car and park the car out in the hot sun all day, when you took your ball out of the trunk late that afternoon, it would be covered in oil -- oil that seeped to the surface from being essentially "baked" out. Your pro shop has a couple of ways to get the oil out like that (doing it yourself in the trunk of your car isn't the best way, even if it does help sometimes). So remember: 1. Wipe off your ball before EVERY shot. Make it part of your pre-shot routine. 2. Clean your ball before you leave the bowling center. Every time. Use some ball cleaner like Tac Up or some other cleaner. Even rubbing alcohol is good (and a lot cheaper). 3. Every 15 or 20 games, it's not a bad idea to touch up the ball with an abralon pad. But you should consult with your pro shop first about how to do it. Abralon pads are sold in a variety of different grits. 360, 500, 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 are all you need. And 4., get your ball into the pro shop for a deep cleaning at least every 75 or 100 games or so. You might be able to go longer if you adhere closely to steps 1, 2 and 3. But I wouldn't go more than about 125 games before a good deep cleaning. It'll extend the life of your ball. If you haven't done any of these things before, then I promise if you get a deeep cleaning and hit the cover with an abralon pad, you will be astonished at how such a simple act can bring your ball back to life.

    I have a question do you have any tips on being consist on putting the ball in the same spot every time?

    • @ProdigyBowlersTour
      @ProdigyBowlersTour  Před 5 lety

      I know the modern thinking about the game centers on revs, revs, revs, and how having a higher rev rate gives you more area to hit, as it produces a more powerful ball that can make the pins dance. All that is true, of course, and I don't dispute it one bit. However, I've also always maintained that if you don't know where the ball is going, all the revs in the world aren't going to help you much. That's especially true on spares, where "power" is of decidedly less benefit than accuracy is. So it behooves all players to develop their accuracy. And in bowling, I've always believed that the player with a golden arm swing has a decided advantage over a player who sprays it, regardless of their respective rev rates. And therein lies the tip. Develop a nice, straight, repeatable arm swing. For many players, that means learning to just SWING the ball without muscling it. Swing it like a pendulum, letting gravity and the weight of the ball do the work. For other players, it means learning to get their right leg and hip out of the way so their swing can be unimpeded and straight. For still others, it means fixing their pushaway as a faulty pushaway can set the ball in motion on a swing plane that conflicts with the desired launch angle and requires a player to impose some manipulation to the swing plane mid-swing. I could probably list a few more variables in play in the arm swing, so it would be next to impossible to prescribe for you the right remedy to fix YOUR swing. What I can say is that another set of eyes (a coach) would be your best bet in quickly identifying the problem YOU need to correct.
