- Here's a tour of the early stages of a 3-acres homestead. Now that we're two full years in, we talk a bit about what we've done so far, what's worked well for us, and what we might change in the years to come.
On this homestead we are currently raising grass-fed lamb, pastured poultry, and laying hens, as well as growing food.

I just subscribed! We have a 2.5 acre homestead! We added a large no-till garden, an orchard, and backyard chickens this year! We are considering getting goats or lambs in the future! So excited to followw along with your journey! Your cat is adorable!

Love it. We just acquired a property next to ours that is 1.64 acres. It has a house to rent, a detached garage to commandeer, and a small barn. We currently have 1.25 so that will give us 2.9 acres with which to work. We're hoping to get hogs and meat birds this year, and some mini-Jersey cows next. Thanks for the great information!

I really like the rock walkway across the creek, that is nice. We just added sheep to the homestead last year and are expecting our first kids in May/June. Keep up the good work.

You can use the grain to teach the lambs to come to your call and they'll continue to come to your call for the rest of their lives if you do it right. Makes for a lot easier time bringing them in from pasture at night or if they get out.
We typically do that with our lambs too - for whatever reason, one year I just never used grain after they went out on pasture. We don’t lock them in at night, so it ended up not being a big deal. Our lambs this year are trained to my voice and really come running if I’m holding a bucket :)

Hi. I am new to your channel. Love the average you have. But if you wanted a sheer proof way keeping deer out. Have raised beds as outline about 4 ft tall. Then put your fencing on top of Outter wall of raised bed. And have doorway entering space as big as you want. Then your space inside is protected from deer and other critters that may harm the harvest. You will be limited to what you want to maintain. Im raise bed could be mixture of strawberry and floral plants to attract your pollinators. I used 20' x 20' beds spread out over solid acre. Each enclosure is its own eco system. And easily converted to winter gardens by putting heavy Polly over top n walls to trap in heat. Nothing better than vine ripped tomatoes for Christmas and Valentine's dinner.

When u have spare time, look into small hydroelectric generator set up. There is already a nice small waterfall area perfect for installation.

Have you considered goats for some of the brush cleanup? What are your thoughts on Paul Gautschi's "Back to Eden" wood chip gardening method?
We’ve thought about goats in that we think they’d help, but aren’t at a point where we feel ready for them or for long term “residents”. But perhaps in time and with better winter shelter!
As for the garden, I’m certainly intrigued by mulches and the different benefits they can provide - and if I had a good source for wood chips or straw I would probably be using it. There seem to be a lot of factors at play, where it works for some and less so for others, but I try to see the garden as a long term and ongoing lesson. We’ll always get things to grow, but some years are better than others. Always willing to give something a try!

I've had a yearning for the self-sufficient farm life for at least twenty years; and having lived in big cities for well over forty years, am trying to strategise a manageable way out; so your video helped tremendously in giving some perspective on what a small homestead can do.

No problems with the sheep knocking the fencing down? My plan was going with goats. However, goats can and will push fencing. Great place you have. Just purchased 3 acres in Mississippi.
The sheep will test the fence, but as long as we are moving and they have what they need, the don't push on the fence. We've never had a problem with since we started using fencing that goes all the way to the ground. Thanks for watching, and best of luck on your new land!

Great question! I either stomp it down or sythe it because it definitely becomes less powerful in tall grass.
Lovely place. But how do you cope with the traffic noise?
That's a really good question. Honestly, we don't really notice it much. Our house is built on a hill, so down the hill the sound isn't as loud. Also, the camera's microphone amplifies the sound unfortunately. It comes through on the videos louder than it really is.
What do you do with your sheep at night for predator protection?
We haven't had any issues with predators so far (knock on wood) with sheep, but chickens are a different story. The electric fences we use have been effective in keeping predators away. We use electric netting that goes all the way to the ground so that predators aren't able to sneak underneath or get between lines. Making sure we check the fence each night with a fence tester is our go to - making sure the shock it's delivering is high enough to keep out coyotes.

What is that awful noise in the background?
If you're referring to the the traffic, we live close to a highway. It comes through on the videos louder than it really is. Our house is built on a hill, so down the hill the sound isn't as loud. If you're referring to the insect noise, they are cicadas. They were exceptionally loud last year.
This is so painful to listen to zzzzzzz.
