  • Oktoberfest (Wiesn) 2022
The Oktoberfest or the "Wiesn", as the people of Munich call it succinctly - is the folk festival par excellence. Large and small tents, carousels, booths and much more are set up for over 7 million visitors on around 104 hectares. And with the help of an organization that is gigantic.
Almost 7 million liters of beer, 95,000 liters of wine, 550,000 chicken and 75,000 pork knuckles are consumed. The energy costs for this large folk festival are 2.7 million watts. For comparison: this corresponds to around 15% of the energy requirements of the city of Munich. The numbers alone show how important and how big the Wiesn is.
The highlights of the Oktoberfest in Munich
Munich is a city that has a lot to offer. The old town hall, the English Garden, the Olympic Tower with the Olympic Park, the Allianz Arena, the Theresienhöhe and Marienplatz are just a few of the many attractions. Anyone traveling to the Munich region knows that there is a lot to experience here.
But if you go to Munich in September, you usually go to the Oktoberfest. The Wiesn is known all over the world. In September, the tranquil Theresienwiese becomes a square that attracts millions of people.
We have already listed some key dates for the Oktoberfest. For example, did you know that there are 14 large and 20 small tents at the Oktoberfest? A total of 100,000 people can be seated there. Compared to the number of visitors of approx. 7 million, that is little. But most visitors don't sit in the beer tent all day and so there is a regular exchange on the beer benches.
Of course there is mainly beer, wine, sparkling wine in the tents, but also water and soda. Even coffee and tea is served. Chicken, sausages, knuckles of pork, fish, oxen and veal are eaten. More than 1,000 tons of rubbish are produced at the Wiesn every year. There are toilets that offer almost 1,000 seats. 17 toilets are designed for disabled visitors to the meadow and almost 900 urinals are also available.
