  • Located in the county of Kent, and around 30 miles southeast of central London, is the town of Tunbridge Wells.
    The town is sometimes referred to as Royal Tunbridge Wells in recognition of its royal status bestowed upon it by King Edward VII in 1909 owing to its popularity among the royal family.
    Its history stretches back over 400 years from when a natural spring welled up from the ground, hence the name literally means 'the wells near Tonbridge', in reference to the similarly named neighbouring town with an 'o' instead of 'u'!
    Perhaps the most prominent street in Tunbridge Wells is The Pantiles, where the walk starts. This street was created in the early 17th century, but came into significance during The Restoration (i.e. after the civil war). Queen Catherine, consort to Charles II, is said to have recovered from a dangerous illness after drinking the waters here, thus boosting the area's popularity. A fire in 1687 destroyed the wooden buildings on either side of the street (a familiar story), leading to a series of Georgian buildings taking their place as part of the colonnade we see today.
    Tunbridge Wells was voted 2nd poshest town in the UK according to a 2008 survey of 340 towns and boroughs. The poshest was Westminster in London.

    This brought back wonderful memories. I lived in TW during the early 1990's while I was on my overseas holiday from New Zealand. I lived at The Goodwins, off Broadwater Lane at the bottom end of town. I walked this route to work at The Victoria Place where I had a job working at a place called "The Nutmeg Tree" I believe it's not there anymore? Rather than walk up the noisy A26, I would always go through The Pantiles, then carry on up Mount Pleasant Road. What a fantastic time I had in the wonderful town of Tunbridge Wells. In almost 30 years I've never been back to the UK. This walk was fantastic, I felt like I was there again all those years ago.

    Thank you very much for sharing. It brought back some exceptional memories. Nostalgia, laughter (saudades). This walk had made me recall some of the much I learned when I lived in England, from 2004 to 2006.
    I wish I could revisit Tumbridge Wells. I worked at Pantiles in a restaurant called La Casa Veccia. I think it still exists. Hope so. Meanwhile, thanks again for showing how the essence of this beautiful place has remained.
    Could you do similar videos of other areas, including parks and places like the Camden big houses, Beltring Road, Upper Grosvenor, etc.?
    It would be cool to visit the Opera House, the Pitcher, and Piano restaurant, attend a service at Christ Church, and why not dance at the Chez Moi/Coco Lounge night Club.

    Thanks for this....I have not been in Royal Tunbridge Wells since...I would say since 1987.....?? My Great Aunt owned a magnificent house not far from the train station and the 'common' her Husband worked in 'The City' as a banker...visiting there from Queensland Australia was just 'Grand'... :)

    Thank you for video… I really enjoyed your tour. One thing I noticed, was the lack of diversity, am I right to think that Tunbridge Wells isn’t that racially diverse?

    • @4KExplorer
      @4KExplorer  Před 2 lety

      That's true. The same can be said for almost any small to medium-sized town. Nothing to do with people's attitudes though, as far as I can tell.
