He says my international drivers license is not correct - CAMEROON 🇨🇲[S7-E79]

  • In this episode, I am leaving the Central African Republic and I start heading towards the Republic of Congo. But to do so, I have to cross back into Cameroon first. I am low on cash, and there are no ATMs or banks here, and to get out of the CAR, I have to pay the police, immigration and customs officers. Upon entering Cameroon, the immigration and customs officer also wants money to stamp me in, leaving me with just enough to buy some petrol. As I leave town, there is another checkpoint, and I get the feeling that they want money too.. It's very common to have to show your passport at checkpoints like these, but never your passport, motorcycle papers, insurance, drivers license and international drivers license.. There are no stamps or signatures required on an international drivers license, so this time, I am holding my ground.

Bribing is so normal in africa it’s almost a culture thing. And to be honest I’ve never paid more then 5 euro, mostly it’s even less then 0,50 cents. It’s just simply impossible to make a living with the wages that the government provides to the police (depends what country but it’s around 50 euros a month) it doesn’t make it right but I do understand why they do it.

That is correct. In the countries which an IDL is required it has to be accompanied by your country of origin license. Some countries in the EU do not require an IDL anymore. My advise to travelers is to research the traffic laws and IDL requirements of the countries one intends to visit, as it should be done by visitors into the United States who intend to operate a MV. In the case of the US the laws vary from state to state, but the idea is the same everywhere.

They are very hard punishment for corrupt activities, no doubt, but as in every poor country, the corruption don't stays on one level. Often are whole departments involved. From the little officer on the street, up to the highest superior. Those scams mostly only light up when one part of the chain breaks. And even then, only the lower scapegoat will be punished and the other stay in position.

He tried. He found out. Maybe later someone will let him pay for that shtick. As the saying goes: Do stupid things, pay stupid prices. Or something in that vein. Noraly doesn't deal prices for stupid behaviour. She simply refuses to play their stupid games. More often than not, she tries to solve problems with a bit of generosity and a big dollop of dutch cordiality, as far as I could glean from her vids. ;)

@@oidadesgibtsned no need to look it up, I know this. IDPs are regulated by an international convention, not national law.
