Honestly well done video. As young Khmer kid growing up in America, I always hear stories about the Khmer empire from my family but no one from school or any of my teachers knew anything about my country. Even in college, I took a class on the history of Asia and no one ever spoke about the Khmer empire. Felt like I always had to bring it up on my own. I wrote many papers on the topic and even did my senior capstone project on the Khmer people and Cambodian history. Truly great to see other historians shining light on the history of my country. So thank you! Apologies for such a long comment 🙏🇰🇭 and thank you for pronouncing it “Kamai”. One unique factor with southeast asia conquest are it's extensive "game of throne" situation, where political influence get higher importance than military campaign compared to europe type conquest, where winning a campaign plays more dominant role. Roman empire for example, famously known for it's military strength, but their style not gonna work if applied to asia type conquest.

I think their empire style are weird mix from their nearest chinese and india, but adapted to fit southeast asia tribesmen politic style.
But from as many reference i read, every southeast asia ruler have one thing in common, the majority of people accept that person to be their leader if that person can unite difference between their tribe, using various reason, with the least blood spilled. I am from Australia and my family are Burmese. Khmer Empire has been largely respected here in Myanmar for its history and because it was one of only two major land empires until the Mongol invasions, the other being the Pagan Empire. However, I feel sad for their state now. Moreover, I don't think ever dreaming to regain land from Thailand or Vietnam will ever work out - it has to go. Yet many Cambodians believe China is a good guy that can help them restore their land is even more dangerous. We, the Myanmar people, know how greedy and dangerous China is, and how China destroyed our country. If Cambodians don't wake up immediately from their delusional belief of China, they will be the only loser in the Southeast Asian family.

Only problem with that is when America, vietnam and others invaded or did coups in Cambodia, China was the only people who stood by the former king who became the democratically elected leader. China had a conflict with Vietnam where man lives were lost in order to send a message to get out of Cambodia.
America who claims to spread democracy, funded and trained Lon Nol’s military and took part in the coup of a democratic country.
Not to mention that many Khmer are defendants of Chinese people. The older Chinese who speak teochew and not the modern mandarin. They’ve been here for hundreds and thousands of years. Khmers are influenced by both ancient India and China.

To define China as a bad guy is only possible if you believe in the western mainstream media and apply those double standards to almost everything. If you want to know the Dai Viet you have too look into the origin. The 3 main ethnic group that made up the Vietnamese are Lac Viet (Tai group), Kinh (Early Han chinese group), and the Muong. If you read about Trieu Du aka Zhou Tao who was an ex-Qin general (ethnic Han chinese) established Nan-Yue aka Nam Viet. He brought in the Han immigrants to the Red river delta and set up a rule for inter-racial marriage. When in 938 AD after Dai Viet broke up from China, Vietnam has some mixed and full blooded Han Chinese emperors such as Ngo, Dinh, Le, Ly, Tran and Ho dynasty.

They settled in S Vietnam and when the Indian trader of Funan fell, they set up their own Hindu kingdom which lasted until the 1700 when they became a vassal of the Viet invaders from the north.
During the Vietnam war 1949-1970s they were a small tribe of about 10,000, all that survived. I do not know how many survive now.
If you ever saw the movie "Operation Dumbo Drop" about how many folks in Vietnam worship elephants, that is partly the result of the Funan & Champa Hinduism worship of Ganesha, the elephant god.

Dai Viet's position is actually not that vulnerable. Its northern border with China and western border with Laos are mountainous, so its position is actually very defensible (that's also the reason why the Viet didn't expand westward).. moreover, Dai Viet had a sizeable population in its heartland (the Red River's Delta), which they used to bully their southern neighbors (especially Champa, who didn't have the manpower to match)..

Real owner, who had builded Angkor Wat was Hindi and Siam (Indian and Thai). Khmer(Cambodian) were Slave! and killed the real owner as(Hindu-Siam) and lied to us that Khmer had builded the Angkor Wat but actually not. Education part is the biggest part that Khmer are still need to improve.
