Have you seen Ableton has just released its new Push 3 controller? It has lots of amazing new features, but it's very expensive! With this new release, I've noticed a lot of second-hand Push 2 controllers being sold for great prices. In this video, I'll do a side-by-side comparison and figure out if you need all the new features on the Push 3 or if you are already a Push 2 user, whether it is worth the upgrade!

Learn how to use the Ableton Push 3 just like the pros do.
Don't waste time trying to figure everything out on your own, and let me show you everything you'll need to know to get up and running.
Thanks! This is literally the first video I've seen of a non-standalone Push 3 and it answered lots of my questions. I'm looking forward to upgrading my P2 to the non-standalone P3 because I'm excited about MPE.
Thanks for the comment. Glad to hear this video helped you! And good luck with the upgrade! You’ll love it :)
Thank you. Was waiting for someone to do it.
No problem! Hope you found it useful!
Have both and I think the push 2 is as relevant as it always was. I'm a standalone fan of sorts but obviously, the cost is aligned with the potential. The standalone is good. I don't think there will be much of a second hand market because of the upgradability but If you have a push 2 don't listen to the hype.
I agree! Most of the core features are the same, why? because they just work!
On Push 2 You can use ALL 8 ENCODERS to scroll the browser list. So it's a bit fast. I did get the Push 3 controller version and it takes a bit time to get used to it. It's for my own use at times and my luv doesn't have external audio interface on her laptop.. now she does. I'm continuing using Push 2 with RME FIreface UC on deskto pc. Crossconnection via ADAT with toslink cables with my desktop pc and her laptop.
Yeah this is correct, still I really like new jog wheel on the push 3! Feel it’s a faster than the encoders
Nice video !
Just a small precision: though the Push 2 has no full integration of MPE, it has already polyphonic aftertouch, so that you can at least control the "pressure" parameter of any MPE-plugin the exact same way you would do with a true MPE-controller.
Yes, you are right.
Nice video, but you made one mistake at 10:25: while production has been discontinued this doesn't imply that they stopped supporting it. You can also see confirmation on this on the Abes' forum: they will continue to release firmware updates for Push 2 if the need arises and Push 2 will continue to be supported by Live as well.
Thanks for the comment. Glad you enjoyed the video! This is what I say in the video, Although its discounted, it doesn't mean they will stop supporting it but they could. It was intended to be a question not a statement
thanks for your comparison. how do the buttons feel? on my push 2, they were very stiff and unpleasent to push. i think id had some metal plate underneath or something. are the buttons on the push 3 more clicky?
Hey, Glad you liked the video. Just to clarify, do mean the button on the interface not the pads? If so, yes they feel much better :)
@@pushpatterns yes, buttons not pads. great to hear that they imoproved them. cant wait to get my hands on push 3 at some day. ;)
does/can the push 3 have two stereo line level outs, so that you could route audio out to external hardware effects, back into the push, and have the full mixed output go out to monitors?
Yep it has 4 outputs
how do the tempo encoders compare? I know the Push 2 has a clicky feel to it to increase tempo by one, but wondering if the tempo encoder in Push 3 is smooth?
Hey all the encoders are smooth on the Push 3 apart from the the tempo one. It is stepped. This is on purpose to help you with tempo increases, if it was smooth it would be a lot harder to do small tempo increases. I hope this helps
I love my Push 2, but the i/o on the 3 is very compelling. I dont need standalone so this is definitely on the wishlist.
I feel that! It is defiantly a great upgrade from the push 2! And even if you get the controller version you can always upgrade at a later date! That’s what I have just done!
Thanks for the vid, very informative.
Liked and subbed! 👍
I've got a bit of a dilema here... i bought a Push 2 + Suite Bundle literally WEEKS before they announced the Push 3..
I still have it brand new and unboxed - do you think i have a leg to stand on if i want to try send it back and pay the difference for the Push 3??
I feel a bit duped, as I'd done a lot of research to make sure there was nothing new coming out before parting with so much money, but they pretty much kept it under wraps before suddenly releasing the new device! 😢
Sorry for such a long post..
Ah man! that really sucks! Where are you based? I know in the U.K you have 30 days to return a product brought online, even if there is nothing wrong with it. That might be an option. Also reach out Ableton customer support see what they have to say? I think they would let you return it. Let me know how you get on 👍
@@pushpatterns thanks for the reply.
Yes I'm in Scotland, but over the 30 days unfortunately...
I'll try reach out to Ableton and let you know how I get on 👍
Yes please let me know how you get on!
I dont need MPE and I don't need the built in sound card, as I already have rackmount one with way more I/O. Not interested in the standalone version.
Just bought the Push 2 again in brand new condition and not used (open box) for a bargain price. The later model doesn't have that rubber sticky shit on the bottom like my old Push 2 did. I am now more than happy with what I have.
A lot of people are doing this! If you not bother about the stand-alone, MPE, or audio interface the push 2 is the right way to go :)
Used push 2 still expensive so entering at p3 controller. Looking forward to MPE.
Push 2 has come down loads in price second hand, but if your looking for a new one then yeah maybe worth getting the push 3
Thanks man got a push 2 trying to see if the push 3 is worth it. I think just using push 3 live is why I would get it
The connections and the audio outputs make it a game changer for live! You no longer have to bring a midi interface or an audio interface! And if you get the stand-alone, you can leave your computer at home too! 😱
Yeah. If you are tempted to pick up a Push 2, you have to consider you also need a decent audio/midi interface with that additional expense £200+. The Controller version of the Push 3 has this all built in so you basically only need one USB connection to your computer. This means a cleaner signal eg less chance of ground hum spoiling that signal into the software. It also means you can move your Push 3 between computers without needing to consider those other devices and their drivers.
The only downside is possibly where you frequently 'connect and disconnect' gear to the Push you risk breaking that interface. What you really want, is to do this through jumpers which you keep attached to the push. Someone might come out with a kit that does this. I'm also hoping that eventually there's a third-party source for upgrading cpu/memory, with more bang for your buck. Either that or go with a 'headless laptop'. eg a laptop minus its heavy screen. ;0)
Thank you for sharing! All valid points :)
What about the save button? Does it make any difference for you? Do you save/load projects from push 3?
I haven’t really used it TBH. I think it’s more for the stand-alone users. But can see how it would come in handy if you were no where near your computer 😝
@@pushpatterns thanks for the reply 👍
No problem! Anytime!
One question, hope you guys can help me: Can we attach push 2 as a full midi controller of push 3 in standalone live?
It’s on my to do list! I’ll try it out for you this week and report back! Think it’s possible
@@pushpatterns hi craig!! Is it worked or not?? infinite thanks
@@user-vt8yj7bd8z Very sorry I still haven't tried as I sold my Push 2. They have some at the university where I work but I'm always so busy! As soon as I have free time there I'll test it :)
@@pushpatterns thanks!!!
@@user-vt8yj7bd8z No probs!
How bright are the pads (compared to push 2)? I've found push 2 pads almost unusable outdoors.
Yeah there not much improvement there unfortunately. I think they have got less colourful :(
with power connected aswell? not only usb right?. mine are bright AF xD
If you can see yourself using MPE, you must get a Push 3. Period. You also gain an audio interface and midi hub.
You not wrong there! Did you get a Push 3?
@@pushpatterns yes I did, and I love it! I don’t have to carry a USB hub or an audio interface, and the MPE possibilities keep me from needing a Roli keyboard. All I need now is for them to release Live 12.
Yep The integration of Ableton Live 12 with the Push 3 is going to be very exciting
CV out + ADAT to ES-9 connection FTW. more ENVs for my rack - Gatekeeper galore.
The connections are a game changer!
I don't know why one thing people are not talking about is that push 2' s price was inclusive of the full Ableton live suit and this push 3 does not comes with Ableton live suite you have to purchase it saparately which is deal breaker if you don't have Ableton already.currect me if i am wrong and i am looking to buy push so please share this information coz i want Ableton live suite too.
When was this? For me I brought the push 2 and Suite as a bundle. It’s didn’t come free for me in 2016! And that was with an artist discount too
@@pushpatterns okay so I did a little bit of research and found out that in India they only sale it as a bundle (not sure for other regions)so i had wrong idea about Ableton being free with push 2 sorry for that but still push 3 is way more costly then push 2 and you have to buy licence saparetaly for Ableton so even more expensive 2ndly for India and for some regions the only option available is standalone and the upgrade kits will not be available as well ( source: Ableton's website )so for us push 2 is still better deal if available coz it includes bundle for the less than half of the price of standalone unit and again you have to buy licence saparetaly so that's extra.
This is true the stand-alone version plus Live is going be very expensive. There is always the option to get the controller version and upgrade at a later date. That’s what I did :)
@@pushpatterns yup but for me that's not the option as well in India the only available version is standalone and upgrade kits will be not available in India as well so there's no point in buying push 3 for us in India and some other regions also have the same exact problem so push 2 is better option for us.
In that case, yes the push 2 seems like a better option. They are cheap on the 2nd market as well
where can I buy one ableton push 3?
www.ableton.com/en/shop/push/?push_variant=standalone&live_edition=intro&license_type=new&edu=False
Does the Push 3 work with Reaper? I preffer Reaper as my DAW
Technically yes, in user mode it works in any DAW but it won’t be as integrated as it is with Ableton Live
@@pushpatterns interesting. I'll have to look further into that.
Great, let me know how you get on!
Nope... The pads and functions are fine with Push 2... Abelton is trying to compete with the Akai Force by offering a stand-alone Push 3 that doesn't have half the funtionality of the Force... 💥
You not wrong there. For one, the screen on the force is a proper size!
Na being honest Push 3 is better than Force, Force have more things but push 3 feel better, the New pad and standalone sistem and upgrade is insane
You want more?, The MPE sistem broked everything in push 3 too and the New Paid designs are Just beatiful
yep!
Make a video how to use push 2 and push 3 together.
Every one makes comparison videos but I think Push 2 and 3 work great together.
I have push 2 for years yes the sticky one. I refuse to sell it and now I have the push 3 as well. Amazing together.
It would be a great if you make one, will be appreciated.
Unfortunate I sold the push 2 :( but I have done video on using the launch pad with the push 3! Will be the same topics covered
I wouldn't believe the processor in the push 3 helps with the processing of the cpu, or would it matter much? I got a macbook pro cuz they had told me that's all I'd need for processing music
@@pushpatterns for modular devices? I'm just beginning to understand that, coming from guitar it's like a pedal. I did not realize synthesizers had just about, just as many =D.
I was looking at the SOMA Pulsar 23, would you say that would be a worth combo with the push 3? And those two would be ok under 16 ram? And does analog take up just as much ram as digital?
And the push 3 and the MPC X are both digital, right? Pulsar 23 only synth I know that is analog. Also does that matter much when recording? Pulsar sounds like good attack. Thanks dude in advance. imma subscribe
I don’t use Ableton at all, but I would buy the standalone push 3. It’s about the price of a iPad Pro live looping setup. Too bad is so Ableton oriented.
It's an instrument in its own right I wouldn't worry to much a bout it being Ableton orientated. What DAW do you use?
@@pushpatterns Don't really use Daws these days. Loopy Pro, Koala. Looping with guitar/bass and iOS stuff. Don't really need much more most of the time.
It is literally Ableton in a box, so if that's something you frown upon, maybe you'd be better off looking elsewhere. Maybe a 1010 Blackbox or MPC One would be more up your alley.
Or maybe just a better interface for your iPad. Drambo, Loopy Pro and plugins can cover most of the same bases as the best hardware.

Push Patterns - Dude many retailers in the USA have webpages saying used Push 2 "sold out."
Those that want a Push 2 should move fast, in my opinion. It's even possible that as Ableton themselves no longer sell Push 2s that the used price will jump.
Interesting video, thanks for doing it.
I have a push and the pads - crap. Sound on Sound says Push 3 is fantastic but the pads still aren't great. Shaking my head.
This is true, I think at the moment the push 2's on Ebay are at a great price! £300 and under! amazing!
I feel the workflow is still very clunky compared to machine or mpc…
Depends what’s you’re used too I guess!
Push 2 has an interface... you plug it right in via usb.
Hey! I’m not sure I follow, are you referring to plugging the push 2 into a computer or an audio interface?
Is it worth buying a Push if you only have Live Lite?
I would say so, but Ableton Push 3 comes with a free copy of intro. Which is basically the same as Lite but you have 16 tracks instead of 8.
@@pushpatterns thanks
Unfortunately, the non-stop background music is just too distracting.
What! You can barely hear it!
School must be or must of been hard for you
@@Mozzeo That's why the music is so disturbing, don't you get it.
Haven't even noticed the music until a frustrated chimp mentioned it:)
