Cannibal Crocodile eats smaller crocodile in the Kruger National Park

  • While on a safari in the Kruger National Park and taking a mid morning game drive, we decided to head to the very well known Sunset Dam. On arrival at Sunset Dam we saw a massive crocodile with another smaller crocodile in its mouth, initially we had thought that they were just fighting and a small fight would ensue and that would be the end of it. The croc was initially caught by it's tale and had almost gotten away when the larger cannibal crocodile went in for another grab and sadly grabbed it in just the correct place that escape was impossible.
The entire sighting was an extremely long one and took place over about and hour, we returned to sunset dam late that afternoon to find the larger crocodile almost parading his kill around the dam, the smaller now very very dead crocodile was belly up being relocated, presumably to a more suitable place to be eaten, a little bit of a feeding frenzy followed basically pulling the smaller crocodile bit from bit.
While not uncommon for crocodiles of this size to eat other crocs that are smaller than themselves, it's not often that you actually get to see it happen, we were lucky to have such a sighting in the park and it is definitely one we will remember forever.

Not necessity cannibals, but the most danger going crocs face is from other crocs, they will pretty much eat what they can catch. Although it's possible this may have been a territorial fight as well, just ended badly for the smaller one...

@@MyLifeinAfrica that croc looks way to young to try and challenge for any territory and the definition of cannibalism is eating your own kind lol.
The definition of a cannibal is an animal that eats the flesh of other animals in the same species. A person who eats the flesh of another person is an example of a cannibal. noun.

It is common for crocs...But crocodile mothers, occasionally father and mother, are not cannibalistic towards their hatchlings in general situation (e.g. Guzmán 1996)...But when the hatchlings become yearlings and juveniles, the parents might not tolerate them especially when the parents get newborns (hatchlings). Because the juveniles and yearlings are potentially dangerous to newborns or hatchlings (e.g. Hunt, R.H. 1977).
Crocodiles are generally protective mother, occasionally father and mother, for newborns and hatchlings. But couldn't deny they're cannibalistic, although it varies on individuals.
