I tried this fight once before with this team, but I actually screwed myself out of my main strategy. Oh well, the Affliction into 0 HP works with Veiled anyways.

The True Estate is, as the name would imply, EVERYTHING I use. This has a small chunk of jank, if you don't mind it. I at least try to make things as presentable as I can. - Hry
I love this mod so much, the author really gave each boss unique mechanic instead of making them hard hitting stress damage sponges. Plus the fact only heroes who are on brink of death can interact with something that aint alive is really cool concept.
I love Japanese Yokai and folktales. Western Fairy tails and Creatures usually have some symbolic importance or have a lesson to be learned from them whereas Yokai almost always just show up to kill or maim you. The Umibōzu was a sea spirit that’d appear in calm waters and demand that the sailors give it their catches of the day and upon receiving their gains it’d proceed to drown all of them, or if they decline, capsize their ship and then drown them still.
The only way to circumvent them from killing you is to smoke tobacco and blow the smoke their way.
I've actually read that it will demand that you give it a barrel, and it will then use that barrel to pour water into your boat until it capsizes. The only way to defeat it in those stories is to give it a barrel where the bottom has been knocked out, causing it to be confused long enough for the ship to escape.
Wait wait wait, can you only damage this thing when you're on DD/Afflicted? That is freaking scary.
Only when on Death's Door. If the Umibozu doesn't just get lucky with it's Death's Door rolls, it will try to give you a Heart Attack.
@@cerebralcloud92 Seems like equipping one or two heroes with the Martyr's Seal could be really helpful, and bringing a lot of stress heal too. I'm still scared after that 180+ non-crit hit, holy hell...
@@nightart9345 To be fair, Slayer has Fourfold Harm Charm equipped, which is +100% DMG and +100% DMG Received, so it's only a little inflated. That would've dealt 90ish normally.

@@nightart9345 with damage this high, the specific numbers stop mattering. It could be 90 damage or 900, it’s dropping you to 0 either way.
Being immune to every status really hurts the viable comp team for this boss, but I'm assuming the devs didn't wanna have them be cheesable with blight or bleed
Effectively, as it probably isn't clean to make both the damage vulnerability AND the DoT vulnerability compatible.
There's something fascinating having the music at max while having all the sound effects and narrator be like a background ambience for it. It adds a magic to the track that makes it sound fuller. Also makes me want to try out the mod myself sometime.
You should, Sunward Isles is a fantastic mod.
Ah, I remember this guy. I managed to bring "The Fool" to this fight. Some unfortunate "touches" sent my entire party to insanity.

Yeah, Riposte works really well against Umibozu. Any time that hero gets hit to Death's Door with Just A Touch, they're now able to deal damage, including that Riposte.

@@cerebralcloud92 I feel like commandant could be very useful with Legion cuz you just hold Legion on 1st pos spamming Tetsudo and then feed legion with barbed wires so any blocked hit gives 50% damage back to Umibozu

@@conradshtock3039 Well, Flagellant as a Class isn't the best for Umibozu, as most of Flag's damage comes from Bleeds. Still, not the worst if you wanna try to stack damage.
This was one of the most craziest bosses i ever fought. In fact, im shocked i was able to beat it on my second try. It certainly has a unique gimmick, ill give it that.
Man when I first encountered this boss I was EXTREMELY desperate because he one tapped one of my guys in one hit, but then I realized Dismas riposte can work against him since Dismas would attack after the deaths door blow. Crazy boss, love it.

Breezed through this one with an Apostate, Veiled, HWM, and Flagellant.
The Apostate just turns this into a massive buffet
You got so lucky with the deaths door rolls and the umibozu not doing physical attacks when a hero was vulnerable to it. My 2 first attempts killed a hero at the first unlucky targeted blow and the goddamn thing wouldnt target the main damage dealer but just make the party go insane
To be fair, I got lucky with Danse Macabre proccing, a Veiled Town Event that shoots DBR to Max (87%) for all heroes.
I used to watch so many videos about this thing. Absolutely terrifying yet incredible creature.
This was by far the best boss of the Isles and also the one I feared the most. Lore wise it's INSANELY well done, an entity that is not alive that can only be damaged by heroes on the verge of death. Having to guard and de stress instead of healing, rolling corpses near the grave. Plus the Umibozu itself is so scary man. This eldritch abomination that resides in the depths of the sea, but it's not alive or dead, it's empty, devoid of life yet moving. Trying to drag others into the nothingness. And the music is... wow.
Simply staring at such an entity stresses the party. This thing shouldn't be. It has no right to be. Its existence is a mistake. And the scariest thing? It looks like you. It has a human shape. Your sins, your essence, exemplified. Madness.

Turns out, after beating this boss myself that Damage Reflection actually doesn't work - It seems that the boss just has an exceptionally low damage received modifier (which is different to PROT and I guess damage reflection damage does get affected by damaged received modifiers).
The way the boss works is that when you go down to death's door, you get a 10000% damage bonus which is meant to counteract the boss's damage received modifier of 0.01 (0.01 * 100 = 1). This is why any other attack just deals 0 damage - its not that you're not dealing damage, it's just that you're dealing so little damage when not at death's door that it just gets rounded down to 0. This is also why when you look at the damage numbers on the heroes on death's door, you'll see some ridiculous numbers like 1413 - 2625.
That being said, just like the Prophet, it's really weak against dodge stacking guard comps and once you figure out what moves he can use and which positions they can hit, I'd say he's actually easier than a Champion level prophet because:
1. He doesn't have any physically damaging ability that hits the whole team at once and his only physically damaging AoE attack can only hit the front 2 ranks. This means that the back 2 ranks cannot be hit if they are guarded.
2. You get dropped straight into the fight like the Shrieker so you don't need to fight through a dungeon that might drain your resources beforehand (and also means you can fully specialize your team to defeating the boss rather than needing to take into account the rest of the dungeon as well).
The team comp I used to beat him was Vestal-Musketeer-MAA-MAA. The Vestal and two MAAs at the front are loaded with the best dodge trinkets I have (the Tattered Parasol which is a trinket the mod adds is straight OP here as it adds a 40% dodge multiplier when you are on the Sunward Isles - put this on the MAA who will be guarding the musketeer). Musketeer pumps damage and nothing else (The Eastern Matchlock which is another trinket this mod adds is good here - the accuracy loss doesn't matter because the boss has 0 dodge and you'll be spamming Command with your MAAs anyway).
Bring 4 Shard Dusts and split them evenly between the two MAAs so you get 2 Bolsters between both MAAs, giving the whole team +40 dodge and capping the stress damage received at -80%. This makes stress damage practically non-existent and one of the two stress attacks the boss has can be dodged. The vestal is just here as an insurance policy just in case someone else aside from the Musketeer gets taken down to death's door. You could probably replace the vestal with an Antiquarian in order to get even more dodge while still having an emergency heal or another Musketeer/Arbalest with the heal equipped to kill the boss faster whilst also having another heal if things go wrong.
Bring along a couple aegis scales just for the start of the fight when you're still setting up and you're pretty much golden - truth be told I didn't even need to heal with my vestal at all throughout the fight once we go our Bolsters going. The fight became trivial and all I had to do is keep my guard up on the musketeer and keep shooting until the boss was dead.

My typical team for this boss is V-HM-SB-L or similar with modded characters. Vestal is for emergency heals, HM with two dodging trinkets guards the Leper (earlier the Vestal) after the latter is put to death door. Note that the HM's dodge becomes so high that Umibozu only has the the basic 5% chance to hit him. Leper gets two damage trinkets (Martyr's Seal!) and uses the Revenge in the first round. The SB is my other DPS because she can remain at the death door due to the Serpent Sway skill for 4 attacks. Finally I always make sure that all of my characters except from the Leper is fast enough even at the death door.
With this setup Umibozu is easy, he always dies fast enough not to have any problem with the stress and I have never had to resist an attack at death door so far. In fact I consider several bosses significantly more difficult than him (it?).

Wait with the insanely high damage this boss deals wouldn't damage reflection completely destroy this boss? As far as I know the Mirror shield 30% reflect for MAA is the only source of damage reflection in vanilla but even that would rip into the boss especially on the high damage rolls, dealing around 20 damage on each reflect. Add on a riposte and a party-wide heal to keep off death's door and the boss should go down quickly. Since damage reflection bypasses all kinds of resists and isn't affected by prot I can't see why this wouldn't work unless I'm missing something about the boss.
Modded classes like the seer or commandant would completely decimate this boss due to their ability to give team wide damage reflection.
I am very late but you can only reflect as much damage as you have HP. overkill damage does not contribute to damage reflection.

@@timothy6583 It actually went well. Decided to go full offense. Had everyone with martyrs seal. First time I went in I had to retreat since I didn’t know you had to be at deaths door so went back in prepared and burned him down

Then you’d likely be using Houndmaster to Dodge Guard. Let someone (likely Leper) get hit by Just A Touch, then spam HM’s Guard on that Death’s Door Leper. Likely with MaA for Bolster and Arb or Ves to keep the rest of the party off Death’s Door.

Because the Umibozu is taking -99% DMG Received, or something like that. I don’t know the full backend magic that was done to make Umibozu the way it is
I can see that the boss is doing full hp almost each hit, but doesn't really have means to put blight/bleed status. Why not take a vestal using full team heal with you?
You need to be on Death's Door in order to deal damage to the Umibozu.
