I’m impressed with your openness and respect for all the various musical genres you have reacted to on your channel. You have a concise way of explaining the emotions and meanings behind the lyrics. 👏🏼 👏🏼 When you said, “people listen to music to relate.” It reminds me of why I watch your videos. To answer your question they titled the song Pittsburgh because that Joel (screaming vocals) had a seizure during the 2013 Warped Tour, they said it was a result from Joel’s drinking to much and from being in the heat, so Joel wrote the lyrics for how he felt after everything happened.
Absolutely love how you reacted to the music and kept an open mind! If you want another one by them then I Bring the Weather with Me and Don’t Lean on Me are fantastic!

The song is titled "Pittsburgh" because lead vocalist Joel Birch had a near-death experience in the city while on Warped Tour in 2013(?) I believe. He was extremely dehydrated due to the overbearing heat and ended up being hospitalized for three days.

Man, what a great song. Metalcore and Post Hardcore are so often overlooked lyrically but it’s a deeply meaningful genre.
Polaris - Dusk to Day, Pray for Rain
August Burns Red - Ties that Bind, Invisible Enemy
    Architects - Hereafter, Doomsday
The Ghost Inside - Aftermath, Mercy
Phinehas - Know Death; Know Forever, The Fire Itself

I currently relate to this song 100%. I'm 30 years old, suffering from incurable depression (tried every drug under the sun, countless medications and therapists, religion, CBT, cannabis), and the pains of my past are insurmountable. Through it all, my only strength has been carrying through my pain to spare my wonderful parents from the despair of a child committing suicide. If I had had horrible parents and family as a youth, I 100% wouldve committed suicide at age 12.
But here I am, at my breaking point. As the song states, "I'll carry on for you... I'll shed my tears until I am drown, or until I am underground."
I've long since drowned in my tears (happened 19 years ago, during 7th grade). I've known since then that my death would ABSOLUTELY come by my own hand via suicide. And it's not just "waking moments." I'm a very active/lucid dreamer, and I spend countless nights in my lucid dreams killing myself over and over. Every time I die in my dreams, it's a feeling of peace and rest. Every time I wake up to my blaring alarm, the thought is the same: "God, I wish I was dead. I can't do this anymore." Every single second of every single waking or sleeping moment of my life is spent wishing I was dead.
My lucid dreams used to be an opportunity to escape from reality, and live my fantasies in real life. Now, they all focus on my death... "Ahat does that mean, health care provider?" After living 2/3rds of my life battling suicide, and spending many thousands of dollars on treatments, the only empathetic solution is to allow me to go to my pharmacy, pick up a lethal dose of barbiturates/fentanyl, and let me end my perpetual suffering.
I've fought for so long to spare my parents, have drowned long ago and lost all hope, and now I'm just ready to die. Sorry, mom and dad. I love you, and I promise I will leave the cleanest, most peaceful possible corpse. Goodbye.

Awesome reaction, Amity are my favorite band! The reason behind the title Pittsburgh is linked to the lyrics slightly. Back in 2013 during Warped Tour in Pittsburgh Joel (the lead singer) had a seizure brought on by dehydration and drinking too much beer in the summer heat. The lyrics relate to how his body felt before and after.

And all you want is someone to help you find a way out of this feeling

I grew up listening to bands like this and rap like $uicideboy$. this metal is post hardcore, its a mixture of screaming metal and melodic metal with heavy riffs mixed in with melodic riffs. its a beautiful mixture and usually the lyrics are spot on amazing. I feel a lot of us just needed a way to vent how we felt without breaking down mentally and physically. bands like this, asking Alexandria, bring me the horizon, they all just spoke to me on a hurtful and painful level and made me feel less alone as well. I guess there's a lot of reasons I love these bands and artists.
edit: the part about blasting it and having it help relieve emotions we can't or don't understand is also spot on!

  • @atom-bomboriginal6387

hey man, found your channel now, always like these music analysis videos, esp from like a psychology/psychotherapy/ w/e kind of perspective? now THAT'S rare. ESP with stuff like metal, now i'm new, and i am tempted to "throw you into the deep end" as far as "metal" goes, but if you don't mind me throwing a suggestion to consider your way, more stuff like this would be great, stuff like Of Mice And Men, Architects, Slipknot(might be a bit heavy but maybe not.)
i don't really have a song suggestion in mind, there's a lot of them, especially since these bands have been around for so long,so here's some info on some of them:
Of Mice And Men is another Metalcore(this band, this song, that you reacted to, that's the sub-genre.) band, who gone through several members, one of the former vocalists had marfans syndrome and was a longtime member, left some years ago(and uh,i hear now has "allegations" against him...) the other vocalist and the (guitar? i think.) player took over more recently and has had a couple albums as the lead singer, bringing the band to something heavier than they used to be more recently, still with the mix of harsh and clean vocals. i'd tell you more about themes but would take more effort and space.
Architects, oh man, another good metalcore band, more "progressive" musically than the others, many albums may have a darker theme, a guitarist with the band(again, not sure on instrument.) twin brother of the drummer, and IIRC the primary song writer, had discovered he had a kind of skin cancer, the last album he wrote had more nihilistic tones/themes and such about the world ending, turned out it was about HIS world ending, as he found out it was terminal, didn't tell anyone for a long time, it ended up cancelling their big world tour for what was at the time thought of as their best album, the song "doomsday" was the last he wrote. there's one more album out after that, fairly recent.
ahhh, Slipknot, started around the late 90's lots of drug abuse in the band members history as well as tragedy such as deaths of loved ones and band members(even more recently a band members child.) and sad wild tales in their lives, hard to slot them into a specific genre, nothing quite fits so well. jumpsuits, masks, and a dose of counter culture, Iowa album(iowa being their home state. only one of these bands is not american, that being the middle.) is perhaps the most beloved by fans.
right, sorry this is so long, i just wanted to give some good info, if you read any of this, let alone consider doing a reaction to any of these bands, thanks! and nice channel.

It takes away the solitude and loneliness when realizing you're not alone in the way you tend to feel at times. This genre of music is what we call Metalcore. It's heavy instrumental and vocals but if you read the lyrics, they are expressing most of the pain and sadness that most of us hide behind our social media. I love bands that bring real feelings to light and that it's OK to feel things. That's what life is about. Whether it's feeling good or bad, feeling alive is better than never feeling anything ever again. We take laughter, tears, happy crying, and so much more for granted. Someday you just might miss feeling something... anything...

Love this band and particularly, their lyrics. They have a newer song called 'Give up the Ghost' which tackles the process of addressing mental health and the ups and downs of trying to get better.
I have alexithymia so I struggle to identify my emotions as anything other than a binary 'good/bad' emotion but find that artists like this who are addressing deep emotional issues offer a way to help me with my own emotions.
Really interesting to see your perspective and openness too. I've noticed artists across quite a few genres now tacking their issues this way. Seems like a sort of self-driven therapy to me and a song will have had the lyrics pondered over immensely which may offer more depth than a simple diary entry.
The metalcore and post hardcode genres have loads of songs which address this sort of thing and I think would be great for one of your videos:
Eight Seconds by Touché Amoré (details the vocalist receiving the call about his mother's passing, the entire album explores this and I think it's lyrically phenomenal)
Sleepwalking by Being Me The Horizon (explores depression and addiction)
Memento Mori by Architects (about facing the end of one's life facing a battle with cancer)
Disease by Beartooth (deals with depression)
Aftermath by The Ghost Inside (dealing with the 'aftermath' of the band surving quite a horrific tour bus accident)

If I remember correctly about the story of "Pittsburgh" it was when Joel the lead vocalist was drinking bears which were higher in alcohol content then Australia where they're from so he drank too much and came very close to death. I'm not sure if I'm remembering 100% correctly but I don't think I'm far off.

For example: Being As An Ocean; A Day To Remember; We Came As Romans; Polaris or my favorite band: LANDMVRKS

Loving these videos and your channel!
I highly suggest looking into Blue October. The lead singer, Justin, has one hell of a story. He struggled with addiction for many years and has been sober since around 2013. He has an uncanny ability to display emotion in his lyrics and voice. A good starting song would be their number one hit "Hate Me" which came out when Justin was still using in 2006. To see the change in him and the band, you can go to "I Hope You're Happy" which has completely different tones and messaging. Another classic, raw song is "Into the Ocean."
Tom, if you don't know Blue October and their story, PLEASE look into it!

The amity afflictions song all fucked up is based on Joel’s battle with drugs alcohol and suicide it’s very powerful, it doesn’t really have harsh vocals so the official music video is a must, this song Pittsburgh got me through some very dark times in my life, just having someone that can put my feelings into lyrics

  • @xXbaker115Xx
    @xXbaker115Xx Před 2 lety

Open letter and all f**ked up are great songs too
But you are 100% correct towards the end this is the sort of music you put on to express yourself when your in this state of mind, especially when you go to one of their shows and there's hundreds of others around you singing along its just nice to know that your not the only one that feels that way. For me it's always a way to put feelings to words i struggle to talk about how I feel but music like this can express it for me
As for the name of this song he's a part of an interview talking about it
We called it Pittsburgh because at Warped Tour 2013 Joel had a seizure, just from drinking too much and being too hot - it was really hot. I think he wrote the song about the way he was feeling after that situation; I think it's generally about how he was feeling until today. It's an outlet through lyrics, it's meaningful for him. It's all-encompassing lyrically… Well, you know what Joel always writes about. It’s kind of like the bond of our band.

There's a lot of lyrics in heavy music that is so deep but most of the people don't take the time to listen to it because it's not their cup of tea. The fact he's taking time to listen pittsburgh by them he can easily listen other songs in this genre!! Love it!
