- This septic tank was installed in 2016. There are 2 people living in the home, and they are very careful about what goes down the drain. If they keep up this pattern of maintenance their septic tank should be just fine for years to come!

I live in Rural Alberta. I live in the country and we are connected to the sewer lines. Nearest town is 35 mins away. We're very lucky we don't have to deal with a septic tank.
Boy howdy your sewer bill must be outrageous for being that far out and having sewage treatment facilities. The planners must anticipate rapid growth in your area to do that ahead of the crowd "stampede"... 😉
@jbsimmons54 No, not really. My sewage has just risen from $33 to $52 per month. I live in a small hamlet of around 80 people. Use to be a vibrant railway town. Not anymore haha.

I installed a tank 25 yrs ago. Oversized it for better retention. The first time I pumped it was 15 yrs the second was 10yrs when i sold the house. The main thing was no wipes, sanitary napkins or feminine products. No Food down the garbage disposal , No grease, No bleach, or any anti bacterial products as well. Basicaly only TP and stuff from the body no other
In sink garbage disposals are bullshit in any way, increase cost for municipal sewers too
Isnt hand soap anti bacterial? How do you avoid that going in septic when washing hands?

We have to have our septic inspected every three years in our towns area. A certificate is mailed out and after it has been inspected and pumped the pumper signs and mails back in the certificate.

Just put a bristle filter in my outlet baffle. My tank is from 1973 and the new pvc baffle is only partially accessible from the 10" outlet inspection plug. Just learned about bristle filters 2 days ago and was hyped. Since i can't fit a rdgid filter in from the inspection hole i thought i was screwed. Bristle is nice and flexible though. Excited to see how it works. Have you worked with these before?
I have a suspicion that my drain field is clogged (tank overflows). I’ve seen videos of “shock treatment “. (Bio-Sol in particular)Do they really work? Would you recommend any product that I could try before I have to call someone? Thank you!

You've mentioned a couple urban legends about keeping your septic tank going, most of them about keeping the bacteria happy, what are the origins for these myths? Where do they come from?
About the H2S gas eating the concrete. Why does no one put an air-tight seal on top of the outlet T?
Or build a ring around the concrete lid so you don't have to hammer it It comes off easily I think they want you to spend money.
I have been waiting on you to do a job with customers using this additive. I recently had my field lines replaced, a whooping $6500.00, so I started using these additives also, along with my maintenance. We haven't had the tank pumped yet but I was wondering were the additives really actually working.
Nope. Waste of money. Dom did a few vids on this subject. He says the money you spend on additives over 3-5 years actually pays for the pumping fee. Best to have it pumped when sludge and solids reach 25% of tank capacity. You have to protect your field lines most of all.
Watch out for those boomer septic tank myths too. They be saying crap like...
"You shouldn't be pumping your tank at all because you'll kill all the bacteria".
"Don't pump your tank all the way. Leave some of the solids for bacteria to build back up".
"Toss in a raw chicken to keep the bacteria happy and healthy".

They do snake out and flush field lines to remove tree roots and matted biofilm in the lines. If the film embeds itself outside the lines into the gravel, there's really no way to clean up the gravel except by digging up the lines and replacing them AND the gravel bed. 🤑🤑🤑 That's why they recommend a 3-5 year pump out interval to keep the tank solids down to a minimum.
@@jbsimmons54 I completely disagree. Our septic tank would always fill up with sludge very quickly after having it pumped and if thw wind was blowing just right you would get a putrid smell from the roof plumbing vents. After a backup where there was piles of crap at the inlet to the tank (only 2 years after having the tank pumped), I dug up the first tank cover, pushed the shit away from the outlet then started using Green Gobber. Since I have been using Green gobbler we haven't had any further issues and there is no more putrid smell coming from the roof vents. This product simply seeds your tank with bacteria that is good at breaking down waste. I think our tank never had the proper balance of bacteria and Green Gobbler fixed that. Since it is live bacteria you also don't need to use it as regularly as they say but it is cheap insurance.
Also put poop straw on the side of your plastic for your poop smoothie..lol😂
Do monthly enzyme treatments help? I do it every month on the first and was wondering if its making a difference or if I'm wasting my time.

I built my home in 1959 and built my own Septic Tank and system. I do not have a Garbage disposal and the Drain from the Washer goes to another system. The tank is 10' x 12' x 10 feet deep - more than four times the size for the house - and I have 8 -75 foot leaching lines coming off the Distribution box. I have had the tank pumped twice - both times there was no sludge in it. Due to poor placement of a tree, one of the lines got roots in a section that had to be replaced when the tree was removed. However, the rest of the lines are clear (yes - I dug some of them. I did replace 5 of the 8 Orangeburg leaching lines and parts of the others with PVC back when that tree was taken down. I have a farm and my own Backhoe) ) From having a big family( 8 Kids) I now live alone. And I regularly put RID X treatment in every month although maybe not as much as specified for the size of my Tank. Of course, back then all the pipes in the house and the pipe out to the tank were Cast Iron. Recently with a pumping, I had an internal pipe inspection - they were clear BUT for some reason they recommended I replace the Cast Iron with PVC - I wonder why when they are clear and the cost to break open my slab would be astronomical. (The house is a split level) I am 85 and really would have a problem affording it. Is it really necessary? The pipe coming out of the house to the Septic Tank show almost no corrosion although I did replace them with PVC. And I also replaced the pipe from the septic to the distribution box with PVC too. However, at 85 I am starting to get old and cannot do all the things I once could for some unexplained reason.
When I built my house, the town inspector said that the local water was on the acid side and I should use GALVANIZED cold water pipe - what a mistake. Over the years I have replaced almost all of that with 3/4 " Copper. I have also replaced MOST of the interior house waste pipe with PVC too - although there is one long stack from an almost never used Toilet upstairs I cannot get to but It appears to have no problems.
Only thing is not having your washer water go to your septic your septic is missing out on enzymes that are in the laundry detergent.. that's what the septic system thrives on new dishwashing liquid has enzymes in to break down food no chlorine in it
It is my clothes washer that does not go to the septic system and never has. That was as recommended by the inspector from the county when I built the house. However - the dishwasher does go to the septic - although I rarely use it now. I use Bleach in the clothes washer so I do not want that in the Septic. Past Dishwasher detergent contained Phosphates - which were no good for the Septic - but that is no longer the case - and both Finish and Cascade are rated safe for Septic systems when used in normal quantities but I would suggest that a septic system would still do better without it. @@peachyclean93
What laundry detergent and dishwasher detergent has these enzymes you're speaking of. I never heard that before

Last job I worked was in septic for a while. In Florida (and im sure rest of the 50 states) there are no open air septic systems due to how unsafe that would be both health wise and safety for kids, dogs, etc
@@mzungu_man6363 They have "Lagoons" that's what they are called and they aren't harmful if maintained properly. Even sewage treatment facilities in some places have them. I believe this is what the comment was referring to and not old school cess pools.
