- Some of you will recognize this piece. It was conceived during a time when life had the band/individual members pushed to the edge of humility by challenges, turmoil, and on the brink of defeat.
As a response and creative coping mechanism, we threw ourselves deep into the music. We found survival and redemption in the creative process, letting the art be our light and compass. Without label support or any invasive external input on content, we dug deep and pulled from our primal creative core.
The process was cathartic and results were ultimately extremely rewarding. By going back to these "primal" roots, the spark of youth and a renewed sense of purpose emerged with us connected us back to the fire that kindled our passion to make music from the very start.
With a few years hence, it is clear now that the music we made expressed one of the most honest contributions, and heartfelt, of any context I have had the blessing to be a part of.
My gratitude towards both the 3 and 4 piece incarnations of The Apex Theory has grown with time, and I am humbled by all the folks who came to our shows, bought albums, and generally supported the art. Thank you all!!!
I will always hold this song dearest to my heart and I hope I captured the pure Joy of drumming to it. "Lightpost" . INJOY...
Please feel free to SHARE :)
OH and Lastly, THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH GIGO AVAKIAN, LEE MAYEUX AND DAVE McLAUGHLIN for you massive amounts of help and patience as i fumbled my way through this recording and editing the past 3 weeks. I owe you all milkshakes... - Hudba
Keep coming back to this video Sammy. Such a legendary song and drummer! Can't get enough.
It's hard to put into words what this video means to me. Sammy is amongst the absolute greatest drummers that I've gotten to witness in my lifetime. A wonderful human being too. Speechless about his immense talents. Hope to experience him live again someday. A spectacular musician!
That style and setup!
Very creative and musically.
I‘m always enjoying „one of a kind“ Drummers!
Sammy J Fuckin Watson!! Outstanding. Welcome back.
Want to see Sammy with guys together. Please
Amazing drums
After a show in 2003/4 (?) you gave me a pair of your used Vater 5Bs, signed with a Sharpie… the only stick I’ve ever really spent money on, and it’s been a alot, have been that make and model 😆
Dude... You were an enormous influence to me in my early twenties even though you never really knew it. I saw Apex Theory in 2001 with what is one of my best friends to this day because we bonded over your music. We still jam to Topsy-Turvy in completion every time we get together. Your music is embedded in my soul. My signed copy of Mt Helium doesn't get spun up much these days - but I still find a way to jam your shit on a regular basis. I've always said... Sammy J, one of my top 5. Dude, you rock.
Those are wonderful words. I'm honored and humbled 🖖
He's up there in my book. That orange kit on Shhh diggy video is gorgeous. One of my favorites
One of my many internet rabbit-holes led me to discovering Apex Theory - i was a huge SOAD fan growing up and discovering that connection was super cool to younger me.
Little did i know i would end up discovering one of the most unique, emotionally resonant and criminally overlooked musical outlets i've ever known. I get that Apex/Mt Helium's time in the spotlight has long passed, but you guys' music helped me through a seriously rough patch of my life
Thank you for doing this, Sammy. Your music continues to be an inspiration
💚🥁🖖
🥶🥶
I remember getting my hands on a non mastered version of this when I met Art and David in Weed back when they were working with Sylvia Massy.
At 16 I remember how blown away I was with the drumming style and how you guys were able to fuse each of your styles into some truly a sound that was yours.
my favourite drummer... i've always love The Apex Theory & Mt. Helium
Please reunite and tour!
So so amazing and inspirational. My best buds and I are huge fans and we will support your art as much as we can. :) This video is such a gift to your fans. Thanks so much.
Yes! Thanks for posting!
It's really awesome watching this at 0.5x speed. Totally helps understanding what he does. Truly amazing work. And RIP to Jivan (who performs the duduk on this track) who recently passed away.
Thankful this exists
Would like to extend my gratitude for this. Been fortunate enough to catch Apex/Mt Helium a few times. First was when Apex opened for SOAD at the Whisky in Dec 98. Forever grateful for your music.
I remember meeting you once outside of MI and I have long regretted not asking you about private lessons haha. All of my friends were students at MI and I would use one of their student ID's (we looked alike) to reserve a room and practice drums after late shifts at Skooby's. Got to know the security guards and other various staff members and was never once questioned about whether or not I was actually a student. Probably easier to get away with in 2009 than 2020😂Good times!
Thx for reaching out. I teach lessons via zoom if you're ever interested :-)
Been waiting for this one to drop. Love the drums on here. Thanks for sharing man. You're one of my favorite drummers.
So sick.....
I've tried not to fanboy in person, but it's rough. You're a serious inspiration of mine. Proud to have met you. -Steve from Clockwork Hero/Crypt Orchid. Studio C (MANCAMP)
This is sooo sick
What a masterpiece Sammy, thanks for sharing this, The Apex Theory always be one of my favourite bands. Greetings from Chile !!!!!
can you put up a drum cam video for Get to Work and/or the Bullshed intro? me and my friends still use those for warm ups, as best as we can lol
Been on an Apex Theory/Mt.Helium fix recently. So glad to see you playing still. New sub 💕🙌
It hurts my soul bit that this video doesn't have a thousand views. I see other drummers on CZcams always getting a hundred thousand plus reviews on their videos and some of these guys can't hold a candle to you my man. You deserve better from CZcams LOL. and man is it such a treat to watch you play the drums.
Just keep spreading the word. Thx for the support..
Absolute masterpiece. Thank you for doing this, Sammy!
Great track. Great drumming 🤙
Wish i had lived on the west coast when you guys were still together. Never got to see you play :/
Always a blast seeing you play, Sammy. Good stuff.
YEEEEEESSS!!!! So much yes. Dope.
I love it. Now when are we going get these for InThatSkyIsSomethingWatching? The whole album would be great but I’d settle for Get To Work.
Thank you Sammy, this makes me both sad and happy, but I'm grateful you did it.
Frickin' sick! Love this song and your drumming brother.
Buddy this is very very very awesome. Respect.
Before watching this video, I hadn’t realized how difficult this is on drums. Man, you’ve got some serious talent that I never realized! Great track I’ve known for quite some time now.
Your bands are so skilled. Some seriously musical yet complex songs. I learned of your music through a friend and am a total fan but heard you disbanded so never got to see live. But anyways I started playing drums just so I could try to write better songs with you as an influence. You have some serious skill and hope you keep making music.
Sammy - you are the man!! Who are you playing with these days?
Just taking time off for health reasons. I released a solo thing this past Halloween www.sammyjwatson.com/album
@@SammyJWatson Thanks for the reply!! I’ll have to check that out soon, great to hear you’re doing well these days!
This song has always blown me away. Amazing to see it in such detail. Thank you for this!!
i rate this as one of the most beautiful pieces of music i've ever heard. this vocal track is different than the album version, i've heard that song enough to notice the small details...
I would thumbs up this video 100 times if I could. I used to play along to this song every day trying to get the parts down perfect. Thanks for the year of drum videos, Sammy!
Sounding great, brother. Not sure where you're lock-out is but maybe we're in the same building? Would love to catch up! When are we hanging?
Sammyyyy!! Is that a 15" Hi hat? Or a 13" snare? One of them!
15" Artisan hi hats 💚
Might be annoying but what are your Sabian cymbal setup? They sound really good with your playing.
Sorry for the delay, got stuck in traffic. I use a slew of thing and constantly change it up and i love experimenting with Prototypes. But those hats are 15" artisans crashes are prob prototypes based around diff HH and Hhx with some legacy. Far right crash is 22" hh thin. 18" crash right above 10" rack is a hh dark crash. My main China I abuse,(left of hihat) is custom and I believe was implemental in the creations of smiths holy china.
Beautiful
Man had to just watch this again ive been listening to your music for over a decade and inspired me to get behind a drumset. Just want you to know youve inspired real music heads all over the world
8:15 NEEDS MORE GOWBELL! 😉
