A different Porsche story…

  • Different, how? Is there no Porsche in it? Well, of course there is. We’re Design 911 and we only do Porsche. But this isn’t the usual ‘man finds car, buys car, drives car’ narrative. In this story, our hero wasn’t looking for a Porsche at all…
When you think Porsche, the 356A isn’t likely to be the first image in your mind. It’s almost certainly an older incarnation of the 911, or maybe a sparkling new Cayenne, depending on what sort of Porsche person you are. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

I totally agree. I am 75 and I have loved cars my entire life, I grew up with my Dad building and restoring antique cars. I now own a 1968 Porsche 912 and an 04 Turbo. Yes the turbo will blow the doors of the 912 but it almost drives itself. I gravitate to the 912 as it is a joy to drive. Don't get me wrong so is the turbo, but every time I drive it something goes wrong! I have put a small fortune in the car. It's not cheap to fix anything so I park it for fear someone will run into it and ruin the value. I will be selling it in the spring!

I don't even own a 356 but count me in as a life member of the Bathtub Appreciation Society. Those who know, know.

If you ever chance to approach a 356 (or a 911/912) from the side while someone is in the driver seat you will notice the driver’s head is exactly centered between the front and rear wheels. It starts there. The 911 is too powerful, the 356 and 912 are perfect. You establish a position driving owning and maintaining that just issued available with anything else. If you’re willing to put up with it’s quirks (no defroster ever and no heater until just before you get where you’re going) and you start with a rust free or rust repaired car there’s really no reason you’re boys won’t buy enjoying it after you’ve gone. Great video, brought back some memories of my 356 B.

Nice video! Love my 356 too and feel the same -- it's in condition where I don't have to worry about it.

I had a similar experience having owned a 1958 1600 super 356A. I drove it across country, twice, from oregon to wisconsin. It never let me down. Sadly no one was interested in it when I traded it in (yes traded it in) on a new VW Golf. And the dealer in Merrillville Indiana stole the gold key it had. Loved that car. It's when I began to hate car dealers. 1977.

And THIS in a nutshell is the purpose of a Porsche: to DRIVE it! Not buy it with the intention of flipping it or stuffing it away in a climate controlled garage.

Perfect 356A- the patina is in and it's a drivers car- they way all Porsche's were meant to be. I wonder where you sourced the disc brakes that still look like drum brakes? I love those old steelies on the drum brake- look. My favorite old Porsche wheel aesthetic

That’s the key, it’s a lot of fun to drive and owning it is joyful as is the classic Porsche community

People who view everything as an investment ruin everything. They’ve ruined watches for example, and they’ve ruined cars.

I'm finally getting my hands on a 356 that my god father left me when he passed away. Do you have any advice for someone who's just getting into owning one? What would be the top handful of things you'd do to get it running and feeling good? I don't have a ton of experience working on cars, but I know that getting this car running and looking good not only will honor my god father, but like you said, will be part of the family. I hope that my 2 daughters will grow up loving it.

Interesting to hear this guy talk about the car? Not sure if he’s aware of this cars following? People ( friends) that say don’t get one ,don’t understand what this car actually is

Ask away, I’m happy to help.
Yep, I am aware of the following, but within my circle of peers most would argue that other vehicles may be better value for money.
I’m happy with my choice, I love it.

Maybe not the fastest Porsche by today's standards, but certainly the most beautiful and arguably the best fun to drive too!
