    The 940 has been my dream knife for quite some time now. I first eyeballed one before my first trip to Iraq and I fell in love with it. Back then they had the black handles (not sure why they dropped that color and went with green). Every time I used it, I loved it even more and was blown away by the Axis lock. It's extremely strong due to design and can be used either handed. After about 6 years of owning it, I decided to pick up another one. I've tried to carry other knives, but I find myself clipping this one back onto my pocket after a short time. Any time someone asks me for a knife recommendation, I immediately suggest the 940. Folks balk at the price, but it's something that will last a lifetime.
    After seeing your videos on the Apex, I decided to pick one up since my Gatco left a lot to be desired. I also tried another sharpening system and promptly chowdered the blade. Sent it back for a fresh blade. Now, with the Apex, I can see myself in the edge and will cut like no other. And the edge lasts so much longer.

    Good vid. Nice to hear someone talk so lovingly about their blade. I own the 940, and acknowledge it's greatness as a design, but haven't really bonded with it yet due to some blade play. I'm actually scaling back on knife buying a bit. There are so many great knives out there, and you only have so much carry time. Kind of makes me sad to have knives that don't get carried so I've just stopped buying until I find something uber special.

    I just have to say I bought a 940-2 after handling a 940-1 and 940 at semperfidepot - I liked the G10, mid weight level and S30V steel for its ease of sharpening. Got mine for $130 ($141 after Auntie Sam took her cut out here in CA) and it's just awesome. My beloved sebenza 21 has taken a back seat for the time being because of how nicely shaped this blade is. While my Sebbie is obviously the more brutally durable of the two, this 940-2 is just great for my benign cutting tasks. It eats tape for breakfast and boxes for lunch and dinner!

    Many thanks.

  • @TheApostleP
    @TheApostleP  Před 11 lety +1

    Great question, Chris! To put it simply, the Benchmade 940 is the best $150 EDC pocket/utility knife on the market. Fit and finish are superb. The steel is awesome. It's carryability / pocketability are unmatched. The handle ergonomics are perfection. The mechanism is unbelievable. The annodizing on the handle is pretty durable for the type, and gives great traction. In short, if you're going to spend $150 on one high-quality EDC blade, look no further.

    I was hoping you could help me with a decision I'm trying to make. I was close to pulling the trigger on the 530, but then learned of the 940. I've read tons of great reviews about the 940. Even you taught this as being one of the best or the best EDC, but then you go and say that these knives "are not cutters". It seems that yours only became a cutter after all this special work you did on yours. I'm not willing to invest that amount of time to get a $100+ knife to cut properly. I've heard zero cutting issues concerning the 530, so I'm wondering if I should move forward with that (like I was initially going to), instead of the 940. I mostly open packages, cut tape, cut boxes and do food prep.
    Thoughts?

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  Před 10 lety +1

      Great question with great logic behind it, Raymond. Here's the short-long answer... Although pure slicing ability does not come standard with the 940, and isn't it's strong suit, it can still be sharpened in such a way as to make it a more than adequate cutter/slicer. However, there is indeed much that goes into making a great EDC folder other than pure slicing ability, and in every other area, the 940 just flat kills the 530. It has a stronger blade, has a longer blade and cutting edge, has better ergonomics in hand, has slightly better blade steel, has a stronger handle, and opens and closes with greater ease than the 530. The 530 is thinner in pocket, is a marginally better slicer and will penetrate more easily in a thrust attack. But I maintain that the 530 isn't a purpose-built EDC blade, but rather a small backup tactical blade that can flex into an EDC role. The 940 is a world class EDC blade that errs on the side of strength over pure slicing ability. There... Clear as mud? :)

    I know you do, my friend! Your "extended use" video of this knife was the one thing that really created my desire for it. Nutn's original review was good, and I know he praised the knife, but to see yours wearing years of hard-use scars and still functioning made the difference for me. I don't think I'm the only one you sold one of these to either... Check out Camp's comments :)

    I live in Garrett IN. The reason I ask is because my wife is a chef and needs very sharp knives and they are expensive knives so I am reluctant to sharpen them myself so I thought I would have a professional do it. I was just wondering how much it would cost to sharpen a chef knife or if you would even do it.

    Not only is it fast, biguy... It's just so "automatic." When you pluck it from your pocket, it doesn't seem to matter where your hand is -- your thumb just intuitively finds the thumb stud, and with almost no effort, out it comes! Closing is just about as easy too. You can't go wrong with this one :)

    Thanks for asking, my friend. I'm not sure I'd call it a business, per se, but I do sharpen knives for people. I don't have a website other than my YT channel, as I'm really not interested in high volume. What I do is precision, highly finished sharpening for guys who desire it. I also do some minor folding knife "tune-up" work. I don't do this to get rich, but because I enjoy it, and it does help fund some of my hobby pursuits... like more cool blades. PM me if you need something done.

    The new ones have such horrible grinds and secondary bevels that they almost have a recurve! Past beyond the point of fixing without removing a ton of material which can often result in compromising the overall aesthetics and integrity of the blade!

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  Před 8 lety +4

      I just sharpened an untouched "First Production Run" knife in 154CM with nylatron washers, so it's truly a first run 940. It had recurve in the factory edge. It's not a new problem. If anything, Benchmade's edges are better now than at any time in their history.
