  • I've always wanted a V-Rod, the ultimate Harley, power, looks, an engine designed with Porsche... so when a clean title one popped up for thousands less than I've ever seen one sell before I bought it in a heartbeat. This 2002 Harley-Davidson VRSC has had a very rough 34,000 mile life and it shows. Almost everything is broken or hurt except the motor and boy, oh boy does that engine run. Not a hint of vibration, after 20 years on the road, and it still makes good power. I'm going to save this old muscle bike and make it safe and as close to OEM+ as it can be.

Thank you for wearing a full helmet. I am sure there are some whom will lambast me for saying it. However there was a fatal motorcycle accident (only his vehicle) in town recently where the rider was only wearing a half helmet and his face was completely gone. Arguably he may have survived given the lack of other obvious injuries. Who knows. At least give yourself a chance.

I wouldn't be surprised if the difficulty in shifting simply came from the fact that your shifter was adjusted so poorly. Farting around with my old '82 Yamaha XJ650 I adjusted my shifter up pretty high because I have big feet and the notoriously finicky 2nd gear became even more finicky because it took more pressure from my foot to get there due to the angle. I lived with the slightly lower foot on the left side because it prevented me from missing second and accidentally hitting neutral when really hammering on it for some fun (which still happened much to my dismay)

Also this bike comes alive after 5.5k rpm. Mine looks just like yours. The new tires will change everything-I have the Avon Cobras. Also, toss it into a corner sometime-steering weight aside you’ll be surprised how much lean angle the VRSCA has. You’re not having fun until past 5.5k rpm. Love the v rod!!:)

Look to see if there is a adjustment screw on the clutch cable. If there is that could fix whatever issues you are having. If no adjustment screw, then you might have to replace the cable.
If motorcycle tires are 5 or more years old, it's always good to replace them. The dry rotting is what takes it's toll on them and will cause a blow out. Also definitely going to want to take a really close look at the drive belt as well.
Ever since you put out the first video about this bike, the algorithm in my feed has been nothing but videos about this model... Lol

A buddy of mine bought a 1995 Fatboy used from a dealership many years ago. The rear brake was crap so he tried several times to bleed it with no success. Finally he purchased a hand pump oil Dispenser, filled it with brake fluid and hooked the hose to the bleeder nipple on the rear caliper. We emptied the reservoir and he started reverse bleeding the system forcing fluid in from the caliper end. So much junk just poured out of the line into the reservoir. After a few pumps the fluid came in clear. Rear brake worked fine after that. Those mirrors definitely fit the bike. As for the rust on the running lights. The Previous owner of my 05' Softail purchased a kit to move my running lights from the handle bars to the forks to fit a windshield. The retaining bolts have rusted the same way and it is definitely a Harley part.

About bleeding, I would unbolt and elevate the slave as much as possible. Give it one pump with the screw open to move any air in the line to the slave, then with the bleed hole as high as possible, press in on the slave to get the air out, then replace the screw before it sucks any air back in.
HD might dunk the slave in a pot of brake fluid when bench bleeding to prevent air through the bleed port. Maybe not but I bet they had some trick to prevent service issues.

A really good (and cheap) alternative for metal polish/cleaner: Bar Keeper's Friend has a spray cleaner that does AMAZING things for chrome and other plated surfaces as well as bare metals like brass and German silver (nickel silver). The best thing is, it's non-abrasive, so you won't get swirl marks on polished/lacquered surfaces. I even use it on the wheels of my cars... it just melts brake dust but doesn't hurt the finish.

Clutch plates are wearing, I think that's why it slightly drages forward. Fluid stops getting in-between the plates as well and they start sticking together. Could be wrong though, just a suggestion?

To put things into perspective. The vrod has the same horsepower as JR’s destanced toaster.
And the toaster meers that gave better visibility

That bike had good bones and John Ross was just the right person to bring her back. I have loved V-Rods since the very first one I saw unexpectedly and fell in love with when they first came out in the early 2000s. I am so happy he saved this one. These bikes are literally a work of art you can ride!

Regarding the dent in the air filter cover could you use a heat gun and canned air to pull some of it out?

I Lund it was the solid billet wheel on my Vrod that used to make the front end wander as soon as there was a slight gust of wind

The front wheel getting caught in the wind is common with those wheels. Theres no way for the wind to get through them so it just pushes you.

Is it ok to switch the clutch fluid from the purple DOT5 to the DOT4? I know you can't mix them, but is it ok to switch them? Or could that be part of your problem?
