  • Just a basic overview of West Coast Iron, jigs common to the left coast used for yellowtail, barracuda, tuna, wahoo...pretty much any fish including calico bass and white seabass. This vid's not instructional, really just a primer on some of the popular pieces folks use.

    California iron works well here in florida for kingfish, tuna, cobia, wahoo, and AJ's. I believe they are capable anywhere if in the right hands

      We've got a few guides making good use of the irons, call 'em a secret weapon for fish that have seen everything...except WC Iron.

    Great video as usual. Interesting to hear you talk about the old school Marshallese lures. I am currently serving out in the Marshall Islands. I will have to ask some of my local friends about them, see if they still have some laying around.

      You're fast John. Just posted this one...
      Oh, I could go on about the Marshalls and one of these days I'm heading that way to visit (received an invite from a Navy vet who just retired and moved). My dad got his purple heart there, helped get their school going after the Japanese got off the islands, and came back home with some very interesting tales and native work. A device for keeping evil spirits from entering a home, shark tooth war spear/club, woven mats, some nice shell work...and of course my shell jigs. Family sent much of what dad had back. My brother visited some of the islands in the area 30 or so years ago. Back when I was in education I worked with several Marshallese kids/families. And, once I started CharkBait, we've had really wonderful support from our Navy guys spending time out your way. Enjoy the assignment!!!

      It is a very interesting culture here indeed. All of the native work is simply incredible. If you happen to find yourself out around Kwajalein ATOLL, look me up. I'll have a seat on the boat for you.
      You guys are definitely keeping me well geared up out here, just put in another order last night.

    And if I may add, you give the best product run down Mark. Your older avet product line up was instrumental in not only making selections in the avet line up, but just even getting into avet reels all together when I was ready to upgrade from Penn graphite reels when money got better. several pieces of which I ordered from your ship lol

      Mark Smith I purchased a G2 MXL from your shop and it's a phenomenal piece. Light, smooth and powerful. And it's true, Avet reels are deceptively powerful for their size

    Why are these only fished in Ca? Growing up fishing the Redondo Special i now am in texas and would they work in the Gulf?

    • @CharkBaitUSA
      @CharkBaitUSA  Před 5 lety +3

      They should work great for you fishing the Gulf. We have several clients fishing the SouthEast, Florida, North East, all doing quite well with both surface iron and heavy iron. The NorEast guys have found very good success with the surface irons for stripers and other species, and the deep iron is pretty much a no-brainer. We have one guide who has made great use of our left coast iron with his clients, considers it his "secret weapon." So, fish 'em! Also, good job on the Texas move. Spent much time there in the 80's and hope to get back there when I finally pull the plug and retire. I've been taking my wife and sons there the past few years each summer. They have enjoyed the time. My thinking, if they like TX in the summer, it's a slam dunk they'll love the move once they experience spring and fall. DROP some heavy iron down to those AJ's and hang on. I'm equally sure that your night time rig fishing for wahoo and tuna will have even more success tossing some Salas Jr's with single hooks. Give 'em a go!

    How do you tell the difference between surface and deep drop irons?

    • @CharkBaitUSA
      @CharkBaitUSA  Před 6 lety +1

      Pretty easy to tell when you pick one up. Deep iron is heavy and surface iron is light. They'll both sink, but the light iron comes in at 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 ounces, typicallyt not more.

      Right now we only have a few, all at our Huntington Beach shop. Give the guys there a call and they can go over what's available. Given focus of $ and other projects I won't be making more for some time unfortunately. They are a very good lure for a wide variety of fish, used here for barracuda, bonito and bass.

      100 lb plus, a few years back one of our clients nailed a 273 lb yellowfin on the biggest Tady. Very much doable!

    • @frenchbeans
      @frenchbeans Před 7 lety

      Really? I've never seen a tuna of a tady, just flat falls last season.

    • @marksmith4452
      @marksmith4452 Před 7 lety

      Go on something longer than a 3/4 day and you'll see 'em used to great effect. Caught a 110# bluefin on the Rooster a couple years ago on the back side of San Clemente island, on an old Tady brass #9. If I can do that, anyone with some persistence and a bit of luck can too. Flat falls are typically great for schoolie tuna, more often closer to surface on those slower action jigs. Productive no doubt, but the guys who fish a lot, long range and local, fish Tady, Salas and other more traditional WC iron. I omitted many other types of iron, no Slash, no slab-baits, Krocs, sliders and mega bait type jigs from this discussion. If you like flat falls, check the "fall flats" on the weekly specials page of CharkBait - about half the price than the bike makers product....with better hooks and rigging.
