  • VCU stands for Vehicle Control Unit, and it is similar to an ECU (electronic control unit) in an internal combustion engine car in that all mapping and calibration work for the drivetrain is performed within its software. In an EV, a VCU is also like a babysitter for all of the other systems in the car. It monitors and receives data from everywhere - like the battery cells' charge state and the temperatures from sensors in the motor, inverter and batteries, which it uses to control fans and other functions, in addition to managing auxiliary controls like climate control, cruise control, and fast charging.
Follow along as Ampere EV's Lawson Sumner breaks down the major responsibilities of the VCU, and how critical it is to delivering an OEM-level driving experience in an EV conversion!
Ampere EV’s Atom Drive System was developed by world-class engineers and includes modular battery packs, level 3 fast charging, vehicle control unit, and a customizable user interface-all built in-house, pre-configured, and ready to install. The system also includes a high-quality touchscreen user interface with options for tactile switches and legacy gauges.
