i've come across a few people who took issue with my use of religious symbols, & accused me of appropriation. that is a very legitimate concern to have. it's a worthy discussion & it must be taken seriously.
i've been incorporating references to different religious & spiritual modalities & philosophies into my music since day one. & they've all been reflections of my personal life, spiritual walk, & life trajectory. although my earliest stuff was mostly embellished with buddhist references only, & it reduced christian theology to BS, i've arrived at a place in which i embrace the mystical side of christianity & jesus' teachings in particular, partially because of how well they mesh with the messages of other traditions. it is astounding how similar jesus is to krishna & the buddha. i study all of these wisdom traditions, & am very inspired by all of them. i am a perennialist & a universalist. i would never include those symbols if i didn't have a personal connection with them. they are all valid paths to/in/as a universal god, or spirit, or being, or whatever you want to call the presence that is beyond understanding.
this song is dipped in ancient hindu philosophy & a slight bit of mystical christianity. (& drenched in childhood nostalgia, a lot of which i look at now through a spiritual lens.)
religions are not cultures. i am not claiming to be part of any culture. i'm white, born in america. i don't have any culture that isn't hot dogs & fireworks. & even then i reject fireworks LOL.
but i do put value in the philosophy & wisdom found in taoism, mystical christianity, advaita vedanta & kashmir shaivism (hindu), judaism & kaballah, jainism, buddhism, as well as other traditions, modalities, & philosophies. including a course in miracles, the law of one, paul selig's books, eckhart tolle's books, etc. yes i have always loved the aesthetic of religion symbolism, just as i love computer programming aesthetics & 80s corporate advertisement aesthetics. but i wouldn't be using these references if i didn't have a deep connection with them beyond just the looks.
i do not & never will support any kind of scriptural inerrancy, univocality, or literalism. nor do i wish to perpetuate any kind of fundamentalism, nor the notion of a punitive god. if it's not loving & inclusive, i do not fuck with it.
i know my release of this video comes at a weird time considering the star of david symbol i use in this video. i want to be clear that i am in full support of a ceasefire & the liberation of the palestinian people from everything that ails them- especially a fascist war-mongering racist islamophobic colonizing genocidal military & government & civilian supporters who are senselessly killing palestinians en masse, occupying their land, & targeting schools & hospitals & homes with white phosphorous & whatever other technology this country has provided or funded. this is a fucking holocaust & it needs to stop. (& fuck anti-semitism.)
