The stairfall stunts were done by my best friend Henry Korhonen. He passed away a few years ago. I come back here to see him, still alive and doing what he loved. Frozen forever in time. Miss you man.
I could never get tired of hearing this a million times!!! Now THAT'S music!! Terrible shame.. the musicians who work the hardest don't NEARLY get the recognition they SOOO DESERVE!!! Luv u ☆♡☆
Had the fucking honor of hearing them live a bunch of years ago in my small hometown. Couldn't get over how fucking amazing they were live. As many others have said they are criminally underrated.
Saw them last night. Was right in front of the stage. I’ve been to a lot of concerts, this is definitely in the top 5 of favourite live performances. Ian Thornley is so incredibly talented, I don’t understand how he’s so underrated.
Lol jokes on you, I have been stealing Canadian airwaves for years. I live right on a boarder. Pretty sick to grow up with both Canadian and American legends.
My girlfriend and I split up...I got myself a new apartment and this song became a part of my life...My whole emotions and life were "blown wide open"....I was left bleeding in a sense. That was 1999. If you like this one, "Gone away" by Cold was even better!! It brought me comfort also......
This is simply one of the greatest songs ever recorded. And to be fair, there are many songs that could be considered “the best,” this just happens to be among them!
now 28, i remember being a young lady in my teens when i first heard this. this suddenly became my refuge when everything felt just wrong. i don't know but this song has an effect on me that takes away all my worries. i salute this simple song maybe only few people know but has moved lives including mine. few songs have that power.
Very good lyrics. I realize this song is a lament over the termination of a relationship, but it is one of those love songs that also resonates for grief over a death.
Man I love this song, this whole album, I had this in my cd changer all the time in the 90's, listened every day, then lost track of the band, Was reminded of them a couple days ago and set down to listen some 18 years later, man what a rush of feelings and emotion their songs evoke, truly one of the most talented and overlooked artist ever. I am listening to this everyday again along with Ians new tracks!
dude this sounds exactly like me a month ago, forgot about how damn good his music is ,, was reminded of it about a month ago, now i listen to it daily stuck in the 90s good vibes,,, plus he playin at the casino here feb 9 cant wait!
Awesome and wisely spoken! This album WAS the only cd I had with me in a combat zone and listened to it everyday for 9 months...and it spoke to me and sounded fresh and breathing, like a human, every time I listened with deep content, knowing if I died while serving a greater cause, I could be met somewhere with this sound that makes me feel at peace with the world. My girlfriend had given up her fight with dating a military guy all the while, this album saved my life with simple words....
Nov 21 2023 I’m bringing my kiddo to see you guys and I literally am tearing up thinking about it! Last time I saw you I was pregnant with her. I love you guys right from the get go. You’re true classic musicians ❤
One of the most underrated bands from Canada. People don't know what they're missing if they haven't heard 'In Loving Memory of...' in its entirety. Now THIS is music.
I'm embarrassed to say this but this is the first time I've heard this song and this band! Don't know where I've been but I've become an instant fan. This song hits me right in the heart.
I remember hearing this on MuchMusic back in fhe 90's, and waking from sleep to try to find out who it was. Love them. Got gifted a return of BW and SG in 2012. One is gone too soon, the other powering through. R.I P. C.C. and B.D. 🤘
Aunt Clara, the strange thing about the voice of the band is that no one wanted to be the vocalist. He was just chosen to sing. I couldn't imagine anyone else belting these tunes, he's phenomenal
Wow, coming back to this years later and really listening to the lyrics, I understand. I guess that's normal from listening to a song in your early teens versus late twenties. Such a great song and I love that he throws himself down the stairs in the video - fitting.
I don't know what it is about this song... Since I heard it in my teenage years, it brings out tears in me. I listened to this when my father died unexpectedly over and over to help me process the grief.
I think this song is about facing suppressed emotions and dealing with what you thought you were healed from but resurface without warning and just put you right back into that vulnerable state, and there is an inevitable loss of control that comes with that. I first heard this song when I was too young to understand the meaning but I always loved the way it sounded. Now 20-ish years later I totally understand what Ian is singing about. Life, man.
1998. cycling through toronto, going through all kinds of shht. this blasting on my headphones. you aren't alone man. hang in. and we hang in. we struggle. we fight but we never give in. years later, demons come back, we pull out this tune and we go again.
this gave me chills. me too. 1998. going through some shit. breaking out of it. we hang in. we keep pushing through. the demons knock on the door. blow us wide open but we never ever give in. we go again. ❤
New here, but I'm amazed how much I missed. I was a determined concert goer, in my Day. I'll be 47 on July 1st. I think I'm gonna catch them in Detroit June 13.
This tune reasonates right through me , to this day it stands the hairs of my neck up everything I am doing comes to a stop and I listen to the last note ! Brilliant ! Thanks !
Someone on Facebook showed me this song, I thanked him loads. I usually never like people's choice 😂 but glad I clicked on this one. It's been my favourite since.
Saw Big Wreck back in the early 2000s. They opened for Dream Theater who was on their Falling into Infinity tour. I was right up front and was promptly -blown wide open- with them. At the time, I was into a lot of heavy metal, but Big Wreck had a big impact on me. They lulled the fire that metal made. What a great contrast of music that night. I remember them more that night than I do Dream Theater. It was one of the more pivotal moments in my youth. Thank you Big Wreck!
Literally 1 of my favorite songs, married a Canadian & was lucky enough to have him introduce me to this band and others the lead singer has, it's his voice that gets me 😍
the song is not about murder. You have to listen to the whole album. the whole album is about feelings for someone they lost. trying to suppress the feelings and later, without dealing with the emotions and loss, he feels like a hostage to it and it surrounds him, then it blows wide open, emotionally
That's a good assessment. I remember hearing that Ian got so fed up answering the question "What is Blown Wide Open about?" that he just started saying that it was about dust bunnies. One's he thought he swept away, but didn't.
Yea I can def see the symbolism in this (which is quite obvious IMO). He throws himself down the stairs in the video, he fucked up big time, made a huge mistake and he's paying for it (hating himself in the process). "But I told her I'm sorrryyy...I never wanted it this way. I still need her, but the past won't go away". Getting blown wide open like he can't hide what he's done.
Wow. Its amazing that people drew that conclusion from this song. I know that for myself that what you described was the first conclusion I drew from listening watching the song and listening to the lyrics. I don't know if its people looking for an easy way to sensationalize a song. I don't know, I've heard about there being a moral panic going on centred around the music industry a few decades ago, but I thought that had expired by the late 90's.
Bought this album with Matthew Good Band's "Underdogs", both based on the first single alone, and enjoyed both albums. Now, Matt Good covered this song (you can find it on iTunes somewhere) and he only cared if Ian liked it, which he did. He did do a good job with the song, no pun intended.
I found a couple of Big Wreck songs on a mixtape from the mid-90s and couldn't remember who they were, even though I could sing nearly every word. Thank goodness for the internet!
JULY 13th Kitchener, ON, Canada... Big Wreck, Aerosmith, Slash and Miles Kennedy. Gonna be an F***ing great show! And the whole weekend has MORE great artists!! Glad to live down the road from the park they are doing the show.
This is now the fifth song in a row I've listened to for the first time by this band. I became aware of them in the last 20 minutes thanks to Rick Beato. All I can say is, considering their most recent album was released in 2017, is it's fantastic to see they are still recording music. Not only does Ian Thornley sound very similar to Chris Cornell, 'The Oaf' was an awesome introduction to what these guys can do. So happy I've discovered their sweet sound.
Greatest live show I have ever seen. Danforth Music Hall Decemer 2019, last show before Chrstmas. They let it out and I have love them since 2001 living in Japan! Ian, much appreciated over the years, you don't even know.....
This song it's very hard and near home after I had one of the greatest breakups and heartaches in 2000. I truly was in love with this woman and and she was one of the greatest lessons in my life to kick me in the ass add to face many of my fears that I was running away from.. I never really listened to the song on the CD it was on but it was something that I needed to hear and it sprung me up from Rock Bottom and to start flying up to the sky to where I am today. Just passing this message on to whoever reads this, ask for help if you are going through any form of heartbreak, depression, suicidal thoughts and ideations, any self-destructive Behavior, or simply if you just need to talk to somebody do not stuff emotions down! With that being said I am an amazing place in my life 24 years later and am rising up to do amazing things to help other people where I was at in 2000. Blessings to this band and to whoever reads this! ❤

Thank you for making this beautiful music to heal my broken heart. Lost my love to suicide and having a hard time coping. I introduced him to your band and seen yawl a few times with him.
I remember watching Much Music when I was younger, back when the music videos they played were actually decent, and they'd say, "Up next, Big Wreck" and I'd be all happy that "That Song" was coming up and it would wind up being this one 9 times out of 10... not that that's a bad thing or anything... Love this song! Man the music today can not compare...
In Loving Memory Of... is my benchmark album... It's the pinnacle of rock perfection from the last 20 years. This video and song serve to demonstrate that fact. The only problem is the solo being cut down/out, that is an injustice to all people with ears...
I wish I could get to see them, the live at the Suhr Factory is absolutlely beautiful and Im dying to get to see a live like that, Ian has and amazing voice and thanks to my husband I can get the beautiful things the band and him do musically speaking, they are so underrated... They are just great
Isn't that so true..so many amazing bands back then. I went to see I mother Earth and man, it's rare to go to a concert and hear a band sound just as good if not better live.
The stairfall stunts were done by my best friend Henry Korhonen. He passed away a few years ago. I come back here to see him, still alive and doing what he loved. Frozen forever in time. Miss you man.

I just discovered you guys today. I’m a grown man and I cried hearing this song earlier today. Just absolutely incredible.
honestly this song has lost absolutely nothing over time. If anything its meaning just gets more and more real.
Certified Classic
Good to know this song will live on is NS ! Currently sharing with my neighbors 😂. Classic ❤️
Amazing how he was able to put the feeling of heartbreak to music...just an incredible song.
I could never get tired of hearing this a million times!!! Now THAT'S music!! Terrible shame.. the musicians who work the hardest don't NEARLY get the recognition they SOOO DESERVE!!! Luv u ☆♡☆
One of the best groups to ever come out of Canada. If you can catch them live you will not be disappointed.
Had the fucking honor of hearing them live a bunch of years ago in my small hometown. Couldn't get over how fucking amazing they were live. As many others have said they are criminally underrated.
Yeah I saw them at a bar venue no less I was right up front and centre they were great they covered Zepplins immigrant song too.
I seen them live 5 days ago!!! Awesome show!!!
Saw them last night. Was right in front of the stage. I’ve been to a lot of concerts, this is definitely in the top 5 of favourite live performances. Ian Thornley is so incredibly talented, I don’t understand how he’s so underrated.
They are out of Boston, MA, USA. They went to Berklee school of music.
One of the best Canadian bands ever. The American public has no idea what they're missing.
Some of us know
Lol jokes on you, I have been stealing Canadian airwaves for years. I live right on a boarder. Pretty sick to grow up with both Canadian and American legends.

Found this song in my late teen's,I'm now 43, still a rush for me!!!!
Going to buy one of their albums right now. Tragically underrated band, and Thornley is one of the best frontmen in Canadian rock

This is simply one of the greatest songs ever recorded. And to be fair, there are many songs that could be considered “the best,” this just happens to be among them!

I swear every time I hear Big Wreck it brings me to my favorite season. Fall!!
kisamesouth9000 Wow! I totally agree. This album especially. Good call!
As a metalhead my friends always questioned why I loved and played these guys. The build up and power of this song answers everything.

This song is not boring at all, the flow of guitar is amazing, the music never gets repetitive
I think this song is about facing suppressed emotions and dealing with what you thought you were healed from but resurface without warning and just put you right back into that vulnerable state, and there is an inevitable loss of control that comes with that. Lyrics
So I'm all surrounded
By the things I thought I'd put away
And I'm all surrounded
By the things I thought I'd put away
An there s a pile in the closet
That's where I threw some yesterday
Maybe under the rug
That's where I swept some the other day
So the mess is drawing forces
Outside I hear them say
Just come out with your hands up
So we can blow you away
And I walk out the door
Get blown wide open
By the things I'd put away
And I wasn't even warned
Just blown wide open
Now the mess is where I lay
So I'm all surrounded
By the things I thought I'd put away
So I'm all surrounded
By the things I thought I'd put away
And if I'm a slob
Well I never looked at it that way
Irresponsible
Well you're not the first to say
But I told her I'm sorry
I never wanted it this way
Yeah, I still need her
But the mess won't go away
And I walk out the door
Get blown wide open
By the things I'd put away
And I'm out on the porch
Just blown wide open
Now the mess is where I lay
Yeah, blown wide open
Blown wide open
Blown wide open
The gun's still smokin'
Blood keeps flowin'
Blown wide open
Why's she going
All surrounded

Thank you for making this beautiful music to heal my broken heart. Lost my love to suicide and having a hard time coping. I introduced him to your band and seen yawl a few times with him.
So sorry to hear that.... stay strong and keep sharing!

@VVoOꟻF wow...naive much???
One of the best albums by far from the 90's
Sether77 It has my all time favourite song That Song in it
Matthew Scarfo. ME TOO!! I still get goosebumps when I hear it. Actually, even when I think about it... Number 1 on my LONG list of favorite songs.
I wish I could get to see them, the live at the Suhr Factory is absolutlely beautiful and Im dying to get to see a live like that, Ian has and amazing voice and thanks to my husband I can get the beautiful things the band and him do musically speaking, they are so underrated... They are just great
I saw these guys live for the first time last night. I'm so glad they included this in their set. They were amazing! Ian is a beast.
Isn't that so true..so many amazing bands back then. I went to see I mother Earth and man, it's rare to go to a concert and hear a band sound just as good if not better live.
Great Canadian band and music! Big Wreck is awesome, live!
