.One of the absolute best demonstrations of using plant material on the gel plate (and there are a multitude of them on youtube!). I never would have thought to use Creeping Charlie in this way and turn it into a thing of beauty but you did it, Kit. I once printed individual Crab Grass plants via direct printing using Lumiere metallic fabric paint on black pfd fabric. I liked the result. They appeared to be dancing on the dark background. Thank you so much for making this video. I look forward to watching your channel.
Thank you! I love weeds and other unruly plants. I think it is all about taking what you have and then finding a process to elevate that.
That third positive print surprised me of the amount of paint that was left on the gel plate. Great tutorial! I need me a bigger gel plate.
The Golden Open paint is the gift that keeps on giving! And some of those Third prints are very subtle and lovely. Make sure you have enough space for a big plate. It is quite awkward to put away. I just leave it out on my work table.

@@KitBellArtistyes I’m loving the slow vibe tonight! it just depends on my mood and how much time I’ve got. I think a lot of CZcamsrs upload both a long form session, and an ‘edited highlights’ short so as to catch both markets. But I imagine editing is a pain in the beep and best outsourced to a phone addicted ten-yr-old😂
@@jojojo8835 Ha ha ha! I get bored watching everything in real time but I don't like watching fast forward either. So after letting the process show through once, I edit out the slow bits. I don't mind editing but I much prefer making art!!!
What a lovely video! I love watching you do your work. And the prints are just gorgeous! Yes, that texture you can get from the tissue sometimes... one of my favorite things. I have lots of a similar type vine in my yard so I will have to give printing them a go. Thanks for sharing your process.
I think some of the most beautiful things are the accidental or unintended. And I have found that I prefer lyrical shapes so vines work well for me. Happy printing!
Could make wonderful tissue for presents or layer colours for Christmas wrap.
I have a friend who would love to see some of these prints on fabric for clothing. Lots to explore, that's for sure!

What we call Creeping Charlie (US) looks completely different than yours. That's not an issue, i just find it interesting.
My husband told me it was Creeping Charlie but now it appears it IS a type of bindweed. I suppose it is too late to change the name of the video!!! Oh well, print what you have!
I'm very new to your channel and really enjoying your techniques. I notice you do not use the "registered paper' technique. Is this because by using the 'open' paints you are able to achieve more pulls and therefore do not need to register the paper? Love your collage work as well. Thank you for sharing.
Good question! In this video, I am creating prints to be cut up and used for collage. Also, they are all pretty much 1 layer. If the print is the final "product", then a registration technique is necessary to square it up on the paper. Registration is essential if the print is the end product and consists of more than one printed layer, otherwise it is very hard to keep the edges of the print even and "clean".
Kit, I learn a lot from your explorations, now wishing I had access to my old back yard and the creeping jenny that's in it. Yes, please do show how you scan and make stencils. What Cricut model do you prefer? I bought one for a granddaughter and am wanting my own now that I realize that stencils are possible.
I use a Cricut Maker. I can cut stencils up to 12"x24" on that which is more than enough for what I want to do. I use it to create everything from quite intricate stencils and masks to simple circles and rectangles. My hands have too much arthritis to be able to cut much manually.
Hi Kit, it sounds like you had some fun while you were away, I cannot wait to see what you created while in Manitoba! I wouldn't of thought to pack my gel plate while on a vacation. Thank you for sharing your beautifully creative techniques, I too enjoy watching your process very much. I am a complete newbie to the gel plate and I am still trying to understand when you need to let the paint dry vs lifting right away. I live on the coast in South Surrey BC and i have not been able to find the Spectra Tissue locally. Would you mind sharing where you purchase yours from? I can only find coloured bleeding tissue in the Spectra brand here and I don't think that is what you are using correct? Also, did you purchase your large plate locally (in BC/Canada)? I have been searching but can only find the larger size in the states and I hate the thought of paying the exchange if I don't have to. I saw that Gelli Arts are offering a poster size 18"x24" plate now...hmmm decisions decisions. Lastly, I too would love to take an on line class should you decide to offer one. Hint hint! Hi Sam. You should be able to find Spectra white tissue at the OPUS stores. Although I have found their inventory can vary a lot. I got my last batch online from Staples - 192 sheets for $57 (I use a lot!). I was able to purchase my 16x20 Gelli Arts plate from OPUS a couple of years ago. It wasn't cheaper than getting it direct from the US and paying the exchange and shipping though. I leave that plate out on my work table as it is quite heavy and awkward to put away. I can print any size I like using a mask (5x7, etc.) so I just tend to use it. Traveling with the 8x10 was easy. Thanks for the prod on an online class. I will think about it ;)
@@KitBellArtist Thank you Kit, I wondered how much the plate would cost from Opus. It shows on their website and Michaels website too but once you press purchase it states they are not available. I will have to bite the bullet I guess. I have been creating some interesting things with the Carnival wet tissue and inks lately but it can be quite pricy so the Spectra sounded a little more reasonable. Cheers!
@@samjackson7270 Point of interest - a couple of years ago, I went to the Gelli Arts site and put the big plate in my "cart" but then chickened out and didn't complete the sale. I got an email in a few days offering me a deal on shipping. Just saying - no rush!
@@samjackson7270 forgot about your questions about letting the paint dry versus pulling it right away. With Golden Open paint, your best choice is to pull the prints while wet (they stay wet on the plate for a long time). If the technique you want to use involves drying and then pulling with an additional layer, then use regular acrylics. If you use regular acrylics for the technique I demonstrated in the video, you will only get 1 negative print and will have to hustle to get a positive one pulled before the paint starts to dry. @yeatesmakes has some really interesting videos that use regular acrylics and a wide variety of other materials.

Great question! Printing on fabric is something I want to explore. I think there are some really interesting possibilities.
What is the tissue you’re using that it isn’t ripping? I’m also in canada and haven’t found tissue that size or strong?
Hi Susan. I use Spectra Artists Tissue (you can get it from OPUS or Staples online in Canada). It is 22x30 inches. It is much stronger than dollar store tissue. It becomes nicely translucent when you collage it. I have just acquired some Wet Strength tissue from Carnival. It is available via Amazon.ca. I am experimenting with it. It is even stronger than Spectra and can pull multiple layers off the gel plate for when you are using regular acrylics and letting them dry on the plate.

Sorry but, that is not Creeping Charlie. Creeping Charlie has tiny leaves that are more like geranium leaves and tiny purple flowers, it roots all along the stem where it touches the ground. That looks like young Bind Weed, it’s very effective on the Gelli plate! Love botanicals on the plate!
You are so right! I took my husband's word for it. We actually have the real creeping charlie in our backyard and I have done some prints with it. My knowledge of plants is limited to what use I can make of them for art ;). I will add a correction to the description of the video but I am not sure I can change the title. Oh dear!
