Choosing the right chainsaw chain replacement is crucial for optimal performance and safety. It involves understanding chain and bar numbers and selecting the appropriate chain size. In this guide, we'll demystify the process, helping you make an informed choice.
    1. Understanding Chain Numbers:
Chainsaw chains come with a series of numbers that indicate their specifications.
The most common format is "Pitch-Gauge-Drive Links" (e.g., 3/8"-0.050"-72).
Pitch: The distance between three consecutive rivets divided by two. It's a crucial measurement that must match the sprocket's pitch on the chainsaw.
Gauge: The thickness of the drive links, which fits into the guide bar groove. The gauge must match the groove width on the bar.
Drive Links: The number of individual links that engage with the chainsaw's drive sprocket.
    2. Chain Pitch:
Chain pitch determines the size and spacing of the chain's drive links.
Common chain pitches include 3/8", 0.325", and 1/4". Ensure the chain pitch matches the sprocket on your chainsaw.
Smaller chainsaws often use 1/4" or 0.325" pitch chains, while larger saws use 3/8" pitch chains.
    3. Chain Gauge:
Chain gauge refers to the thickness of the drive links.
Common gauges include 0.043", 0.050", and 0.063". Ensure the gauge matches the groove width on your guide bar.
Larger chainsaws typically require thicker gauge chains for added durability.
    4. Chain Length (Drive Links):
The number of drive links in the chain affects the fit and tension on the bar.
Accurately count the drive links on your old chain or check the chainsaw's manual for the recommended drive link count.
    5. Matching Bar and Chain:
Ensure the replacement chain matches the length of your guide bar.
A chain that is too short or too long can lead to safety hazards and inefficient cutting.
    6. Additional Considerations:
Choose the type of chain that suits your cutting needs (e.g., full-chisel, semi-chisel, low-profile).
Check if your chainsaw requires a safety chain for certain applications.
Consider the chain's quality and durability, as high-quality chains tend to last longer.
    7. Consult the Manual:
Always refer to your chainsaw's manual for specific chain replacement recommendations.
It may provide guidance on suitable chain types, sizes, and maintenance.
    Conclusion:
Buying the correct chainsaw chain replacement involves understanding chain and bar numbers, chain pitch, gauge, drive links, and ensuring a proper fit with your chainsaw's guide bar. Taking these factors into account will help you choose the right chain for safe and efficient cutting operations while extending the life of your chainsaw.

05:23 - Drive Links, What are they exactly?
06:44 - The 3 important pieces of information when ordering a Chainsaw Chain
Have you ever needed a new chainsaw chain, called a supplier, and realised there is far more to ordering a new chain than just quoting your chainsaw's Make, Model and Bar length? This is most probably not because you chose a bad supplier, it's because there is sometimes a specific set of numbers you need to quote to them before they are sure they are supplying you with the correct chain.
In this video I show you the which numbers are correct, and where to find them on your chainsaw.

Absolutely brilliant! I’ve just taken delivery of a multi- shaft pole saw unit and after trying to lay in a “just in case” spare was about to tear my hair out in frustration. This demonstration saved my sanity and time and money ordering the wrong chain, which seemed very likely. MANY THANKS.

If the drive link measures 0.063, what should the groove measure (approximately)? My bar has no numbers, and it's a bit worn out, I want to squish it to tighten the groove.

Greetings Craig - Say for example you were going at a log and the chain got stuck and wouldnt rotate - and at that point - continued to throttle the gas in attempt to free up the chain and bar yet to no avail - in that attempt the saw began to experience smoking from the "Bar joint" / Cog region - The chain finally got free but my concern is - Smoke was experienced from an unusual region and my concern is - though the saw still appears to operate exactly as it did prior to this experience - should one worry about a newly developed wear one or more of the saw's components? This is a new saw. Thank you for all your deeply educational and comprehensive videos Craig - excellent explainations and instruction.

I see on Amazon I can buy a 20 inch .325 .050 80 for a 450 rancher but the new bar and chain says everything is the same except the drive links is 78 ? So does the drive sprocket on the saw motor have anything to do with the drive links ?

So I got a new chain for my 20 inch saw..and got a 20 bar...dont fit. On the chain I counted 82 links...the packaging say 80 links? What up with that? And so a 20 inch chain don't fit a 20 inch bar..iam confused

    • @TheRepairSpecialist
      @TheRepairSpecialist  Před 8 měsíci

Oh, it sounds like you've run into a bit of a mix-up with your chainsaw chain and bar! It can definitely be confusing, so let's see if we can sort this out together.
First off, the length of the chainsaw bar is generally referred to by its cutting length, which is the active cutting area of the bar. However, the actual physical length of the bar can be a bit longer than that. Now, regarding the chain, the most important thing is to match the chain to the bar's length, and more crucially, the chain's pitch and gauge must be compatible with the bar and the saw itself.
In your case, the chain having 82 links when the packaging says 80 could be a packaging error or a miscount. It’s vital that the number of drive links (those are the links you counted) matches what your bar is designed to handle. If there are too many or too few links, the chain won't fit properly, as you've discovered.
And yes, a 20-inch chain is designed to fit a 20-inch bar, but only if the other specifications (like the number of drive links, pitch, and gauge) align. It's always a good idea to double-check these specs when purchasing a new chain or bar. If possible, bring your chainsaw or the old chain to the store to ensure compatibility, or note down all the specifications from your saw and existing bar and chain.
Don't worry, this is a common issue and easily fixable. You might just need to exchange the chain for one with the correct number of links and compatible specifications. Once you have the right match, you'll be back to your cutting tasks in no time!
I hope this helps a little
