    So I’ve really gone down the rabbit hole with this video. I recently decided to give ground station pro a second try out. The newly updated application has some improved features since the last time I tried it in early 2018. And with my initial testing in this video I think there’s hope for ground station pro.
    First off in 3-D map missions you can have the camera follow along with your flight path and aircraft heading. That wasn’t available in the earlier version. Additionally they’ve added some flight log abilities although the auto sync isn’t there yet.
    For this video I flew two back to back missions with the Mavic 2 Pro. The mission flights worked perfectly. And while the 3-D models didn’t work perfect they were OK. With one exception. Pix4D model had some issues which I’ll share in the second episode of this series.

    Hi Rich, great video. I am just starting doing automated data collection for mapping, so learnt a lot about GS Pro. Re. Bruno de Marques's question below, DJI Terra (new software they have brought out) will now allow the use of Digital Terrain Model data to factor in/compute a "Terrain Follow" option to maintain the same altitude across a wide expanse with elevation changes. Failing that, one can map ribbons along the slopes to maintain the same perspective on slope ground, but it is fiddly. Hope that helps. Regards, Laurent.

      For rendering 2 & 3D models there are a lot of applications out there. Try each out with the free trial periods. Don't sign up to all of them at the same time. Try each. Maps Made Easy, Pix4D, Drone Deploy, Agisoft's Photoscan. Give them a whirl, and be sure to have a lot of data on hand before you try each so you can really get some use out of them.

      I've done some higher end models for private clients who preferred I didn't share their properties (privacy concerns). And it is possible to get good models without too many artifacts. It requires more imaging, more facade images, orbits, and grid missions. It can be done, but a much higher time investment up front, plus a lot more processing power when you're back at the office.

    Does it support Terrain Follow with 3D mapping? I have been using Pix4D capture for about 2 years now and do not regularly need this function but it becomes tedious to split a single flight into 2-3 to maintain a relatively constant GSD. I use this data in Pix4D mapper as-well so it will easily resolve for key points and create a model as long as the GSD between 2 flights remain "GSD1" smaller than or equal to "2xGSD2". I'm looking into Metashape as I have done a few projects using this recently but both seem pretty much the same in my opinion except the price difference and support available. What overall best flight planning software would you recommend for a small survey company with some funding? Whether mobile or desktop as I am not sure how far we can push Metashape with flights of varying GSD.

    Hi Rich, fantastic video! I have a couple of questions (not yet answered below) I’m trying to access crop health (descoloration, for example, but at a finer scale).
    How low can the drone get so I may get more detailed mapping?
    Is collision an issue with pre programmed GS flights? (Uneven terrain, trees, ...)
    Is gps data from each photo saved in the jpeg file? How can I check it? (It must be somewhere, right?)
    Thank you so much

    • @AZ-Drone
      @AZ-Drone  Před 4 lety +1

      Getting too low on these flights can cause a few issues for sure. Issue Number 1 is the fact that the lower you're flying, the more images you'll need to take. Closer to the ground means a lot more images. And potential obstacles. The higher you fly, the fewer images you're taking. But of course flying higher means less detail. It's a balancing act for sure. There are apps that will let you adjust for terrain (terrain aware features). GS Pro isn't one for terrain aware flight unfortunately. Both Map Pilot from Maps Made Easy, and Drone Harmony offer the ability to fly with terrain awareness.

    • @AZ-Drone
      @AZ-Drone  Před 4 lety +2

      Yes these are two separate flights. Since GSP doesn’t offer a grid pattern mission, making 2 missions with the flight paths varying will cover that grid mission need. So fly one mission, have it return (might need a new battery) and then fly the second mission.

  • @sunshynff
    @sunshynff Před 4 lety +2

    Hi Rich, I am VERY happy I came across your page, I have a few (I'd like to say quick, but I doubt it) questions, and pick your brain a bit. Little background of myself, recently had to retire few yrs early from a 23yr career that I loved, as a Firefighter/medic, due to some minor medical issues. Been a hobbyist around 5yrs or so, started off with P2, then P3P and P4. Started messing with fpv racing/freestyle, and got into that pretty heavy for a while. Last year just before retiring, started to miss the photog side, and dusted off last remaining DJI drone, my Mavic Pro and started playing around with that.
    Now I have some time on my hands, I get bored easy, so I am starting a drone business. Would like to offer the usual stuff, inspections, weddings, real estate, etc.. but also looking at doing some unique services too, and also volunteering drone resources with my local fire and police dept., since I ran the drone program at my full time fire dept. before retiring. I'm currently studying for the 107, and besides my Mavic, I purchased a DJI 550, that still needs some assembly, and just last month found an unbelievable deal on a DJI S1000, with the Zenmuse gimbal and a Lumix G9 camera.
    I am very comfortable piloting drones, fairly confident in my abilities with intelligent flight modes and waypoint missions on consumer models, confident in the software Betaflight that configures our racing drones and have some decent intermediate level editing software, Adobe Premiere Elements. This S1000 though, has me quite intimidated, it uses the A2 flight controller, so I'll need to learn A2 assistant software, along with DJI IOSD MarkII, and the Ground Station uses DJI's 2.4GHz bluetooth data link w/ BTU module. Then the whole kit & caboodle is operated by 2 Futaba radios, one for drone, one works camera. Not to mention I have almost no knowledge about actual photography, other than set everything on auto, point and shoot. The guy that sold me the S1000 worked in Hollywood as a drone operator for a few years. He said after learning the software side of this drone, start reading everything you can find on photography, shutter speed, aperture settings, etc, all those setting you never mess with, learn how to use them.
    So I guess my question is, after all that rambling, do you think I bit off more than I can chew if I want to offer engineering type services like 3Dmodeling. Like to be somewhat up and running sometime this Spring. Is the GS software fairly easy to integrate to having experience with GO app waypoints yet no experience with 3D modeling? Should I just stick to things more up my alley/easier, like real estate or weddings or like the lighting rig I am making for the 550? (I've designed a rig using pair of 100w Bridgelux LED chips, air cooled w/fan + heat sinks powered by 6s 7amp lipos, combined brightness of 26k lumen). Could be used for night photo shoots, or for search n rescue with emergency services. Are the classes listed above online I take it, looks like a few would be perfect for me.
    Anyway, any advice or tips you could throw my way would be greatly appreciated. Again, sorry for rambling on the thread, I tend to state a lot of detail, plus like I said, getting bored not working, so "droning on" in youtube vids fills some time..lol. Happy Flying!

    • @AZ-Drone
      @AZ-Drone  Před 4 lety

      Good morning. No worries about rambling, I do it too. :)
      It sounds like you’ve got some very good skill sets that could apply to your drone business. The fact that you’ve worked as an emergency responder gives you some great opportunities right off the bat. Have you looked into accident reconstruction with drones? I believe the guys over at Drone U have an in person course on that. That type of work could tie right into your expertise.
      Over time you can build up to construction 3D modeling. The big question is whether or not there are companies looking for that service in your area. My primary contacts are coming from construction companies looking for time lapse video and stills to document construction progress. That work seems to be in demand. Requests for modeling aren’t as frequent. One thing you can do is use smaller jobs to grow into larger modeling opportunities. When I work client sites I usually add a few extra flights in for myself to improve all aspects of the work I’m doing.
      You made me laugh when you said “easier, like real estate or weddings.” We’ve done weddings over the years. The most high stress work you can do in photography from my view point. :) We stay away from wedding work these days both ground based or aerial. But that’s just us.
      I think my best advice is to pace yourself. No need to rush into one path or another. If you’re interested in modeling start practicing with the different Apps available. Don’t go investing a ton of money into the programs and applications. Use the free trials to start and make use of them. See what fits for your flying. Try one at a time, don’t download them all immediately. Give yourself time with each.
      The guy who sold you the S1000 was correct, understanding photography principles will go a long way to aiding you in your drone business. Even when using autonomous flight apps it’s good to understand how ISO, Aperture, and Shutter speed impact what it is you’re imaging.
      Nice to meet you by the way. Have fun and fly safe!
      Rich

    Rich great video. What is the difference between photomap and 3D map area?

    • @AZ-Drone
      @AZ-Drone  Před 5 lety

      There's not a ton of difference between the two. Photomap seems to be geared toward making 2D maps on GS Pro, and being able to see them on GS Pro. In the Photomap setup you can only select Parallel to the Main Path and Perpendicular to the Main Path as shooting angle options. In the 3D Map you also have course aligned for shooting angle options. From what I've seen, the 2D Photomap is all about the ability to generate a 2D map on your iPad while you're on location.
      The feature is somewhat useful if you're at a new construction site. You pull up the Google satellite map and find that there's no building showing up yet. So you make the Photomap and render it on your iPad. You now have some reference as to the area you're flying. DJI includes the ability to make 5 of these maps for demonstration purposes. The full version of this paid for function costs $300, and doesn't seem to have any other functions.
      In my personal case, I use the 3D Map area, 3D Map POI ($10), and the Waypoint Route setups.

  • @jassie25
    @jassie25 Před 3 lety +1

    Hi Rich,
    Awesome video!
    Some questions if you don't mind:
    What are the costs affiliated with the app?
    Have you experienced problems with GSP?
    Do you need to mark your Ground Control Points?

    • @AZ-Drone
      @AZ-Drone  Před 3 lety

      The app itself is free for GS Pro. There are a few upgrades that aren't necessary that cost some money. But all of the important features are free. Remember, it's an iPad only app. So if you don't own an iPad you'd have to get one to run GS Pro.
      You can fly missions without GCPs. But it you're trying to be as accurate as you can be you'll want to mark out some GCPs as well. It all depends on the application you have in mind for your flights.

  • @clydedigital
    @clydedigital Před 4 lety +1

    I’m just wondering if ground station allows you to embed the model on a website so that others can view and use it?

    • @AZ-Drone
      @AZ-Drone  Před 4 lety +1

      Ground Station pro captures the images for making a model. It doesn’t process a 3D model. Once you’ve collected your images with gs pro you will need to render your model with a program like Pix4D mapper, Metashape, or other desktop modeling software. Or you can process the model online with services like Drone Deploy, Maps made easy, Pix4Ds online processing. GS Pro is the first step in the process, image capture. The second step is desktop or cloud solutions to render and share the model.

    • @AZ-Drone
      @AZ-Drone  Před 5 lety +1

      Hey Garrick! So when you’re doing models you really don’t want any ND filter on the camera. The NDs are for video allowing you to darken the scene to achieve the appropriate shutter speed and FPS. An ND filter for still photos darkens the scene as well, forcing your drone to take longer exposure images which can become blurred due to the motion of the drone. In my udemy class I actually noted that I messed up a model because I forgot I had my ND filter on.

    • @AZ-Drone
      @AZ-Drone  Před 3 lety

      The tilt angle for the flight depends on what you're looking to do. If you'd like to create a 3D model getting some of the sides of structures, rocks, etc will have value. If you're interested in 2D models only then doing the 90 degree angle will be just fine. Thanks for the comment.

      I'm sorry for the delay in my response. Been a little busy around here, but catching up on CZcams comments today.
      In order to be able to adjust your gimbal pitch you must select a 3D Map Area flight. If you choose a "PhotoMap" flight you will not be offered the option to adjust the gimbal. So you probably started planning your mission as a PhotoMap.
      If you want to generate a 2D photo map in GS Pro you must purchase their add on feature "PhotoMap" for $300. Personally I offload the images that I capture with GS Pro and generate my 2D and 3D models with Metashape.

    • @AZ-Drone
      @AZ-Drone  Před 5 lety +1

      Randy Mennie in the case of this small map area and the flight time I simply took all images from each flight and imported them into the modeling software. When you start doing really big maps you’ll want ground control points as well. That’s when the modeling starts getting “complex”. Or you’ll want the RTK Phantom. 😀

    Do you know how well this would deal with altitude changes in the land you are surveying? I.e can I set the drone to be at 200m and if the land drops away, it flys down to maintain 200m above the land at all times?

    • @AZ-Drone
      @AZ-Drone  Před 3 lety +1

      Ground Station Pro currently does not offer "Terrain Aware" flights as you've described unfortunately. However, several other autonomous flight apps do allow for terrain aware flights where the drone's elevation changes while flying over your job site. Drone Harmony (an Andorid and web based application) allows for setting up terrain aware flights, and Map Pilot from Maps Made Easy (iOS application) also allows for terrain aware flights.

  • @mid-atlanticdroneservices

    Hello Rich, This is a great tutorial video as I'm just learning how to do mapping. I don't have a Mac computer. Which program do you recommend for windows? Also, which is the best way to share the final product with a client? Can Ground Station Pro provide a link like Drone Deploy? I'm really favoring GSP over Drone Deploy, but would like to provide links or easy access to final product without building an expensive work station to do it. Any guidance you could provide would be helpful.

    • @AZ-Drone
      @AZ-Drone  Před 2 lety

      Michael, glad the tutorial was useful for you. You don't need a Mac, but for Ground Station Pro you would need an iPad. Ground Station Pro is made for planning and executing your flights for 2D and 3D models. You use it to fly the site you're documenting. When you've completed your data / image capture you come home and offload a ton of pictures.
      From there you'll offload your images and either use a desktop modeling software (Metashape / Pix4D), or an online modeling service (Pix4D, Drone Deploy, Maps Made Easy). I think this point isn't obvious to folks who are learning about this, and I can see why this is confusing.
      There are two major steps for doing this type of modeling. 1- Data capture (GS Pro, Map Pilot Pro, Drone Harmony, Drone Deploy Capture). 2-Data Processing (Drone Deploy, Pix4D, Maps Made Easy, Metashape).
      Whatever capture app you use to get your images doesn't matter so much. I can take images from Ground Station Pro and upload them to Maps Made Easy, Drone Deploy or Pix4D. I can take images from Map Pilot Pro and upload them to Maps Made Easy, Drone Deploy, or Pix4D (there are other 3D modeling packages as well).
      As far as sharing models with clients, Ground Station Pro doesn't do that. It's just for capturing the images. I can take the images from GS Pro and render them in whatever 3D modeler I want. Online, Drone Deploy, Maps Made Easy, or Pix4D can render the models. Each of these online services allow you to share with your clients in a variety of ways. 2D Model downloads, 3D Model Viewers. In my case I use the desktop software "Metashape". It's a Windows and Mac software package. I create my models on my desktop, and then share with my clients through my custom website setup.
      Take a look at our "Black Friday" class sale at Teachable. Each class listed has several free video previews. There's a good bit to learn when you're first starting out with modeling. az-drone.teachable.com/p/black-friday-bundle-all-courses-from-az-drone

    • @AZ-Drone
      @AZ-Drone  Před 5 lety +2

      Photoscan has been renamed to Metashape. And the standard edition is sufficient to generate point clouds, a mesh, and a texture for 3d models. If you’re looking to do 2D orthomosaic and digital elevation models with GPS information built in you’ll need the pro edition. So the standard will work fine if you’re just looking to make 3d models and exporting those models.

      Iria, you can use any capture app you'd like to with Metashape. The capture apps all do the same thing. Fly a path you define and shoot images every few seconds that overlap each other. While different apps have different features, the end result is always the same. You have a bunch of images taken from your drone that you need to throw into a rendering software package. So you should be all set! Have fun!

    Just wanted to point out that I don't think there is any point using cross-hatch flights if the camera is pointed straight down. I can see the point only if the camera gimbal angle is anything but -90degrees. What do you think about this Rich?

    • @AZ-Drone
      @AZ-Drone  Před 5 lety

      I've done a ton of testing with Map Pilot, GS Pro, Drone Deploy & Pix4D capture in the Granite Dells. The dells is a pretty crazy set of rocks here in AZ. In trying missions over and over again I've found cross hatch actually helps make better models of the rocks. Cross hatch & change in gimbal tilt helps even more. But the rocks here are a unique feature that most drone operators will never run across.
      When I've tried a single mission with GS Pro with no cross hatch and no gimbal change the models weren't good. Trying cross hatch they improved even with the camera at 90 degrees. Cross hatch and gimbal change produced the best results. And the best results "out of the box" for this weird set of rocks was Pix4D capture the first time. It by default offers the cross hatch, and has gimbal tilt added in as well.
      I think for normal locations, just 2D models, cross hatch isn't necessary. But if you start getting a lot of land features, etc., cross hatch & gimbal tilt change should be tried.

      'm thinking though that coming in at a different angle may assist with getting different takes on the shadows and the cliff faces on the rocks we have in the dells. Canyons dropping down, some rock faces lit, while some well in shadow.
      On Drone Deploy I don't get to see the FPV view. On Pix4D Capture there is a little FPV camera window option (upper right corner of the app).

With GS Pro you can stop the mission, fly the drone back to you, swap the battery, and relaunch where you left off. GS Pro does not do this automatically so you've got to stay on your toes watching battery life and where the drone is to make sure you bring it back before the battery gets too low.

      First off, love your user name! Gave me a laugh first thing in the morning!
      There is a mapping and modeling package called WebODM. It’s an open source project that you can download and compile for free. Or you can pay the under $100 for a setup installer. I personally haven’t had much success with the software on my older windows machine or my iMac. I’ve made some small models, but larger ones get really resource intensive fast. When I have free time I want to experiment more with it.

      I've not come accross WebODM. But after you suggested, I went and did a search. Interesting, it uses multi server concepts so you can scale horizontally if required (more than 1 PC/server). Will try it out when I have chance.
      Also, just to let you know, you saved me 300 dollar from purchasing the PhotoMap feature in GS Pro. I was going to purchase it thinking that I can't do any mapping at all without it. After watching your videos then I realised that I could actually do 3D Area Mapping for free. Except that it doesn't stitch them up in the app.

      You will need a 2D / 3D rendering software in order to take the images captured and turn them into a model. Some of this software can get very expensive. Fortunately most of the programs can be tested for 14 - 30 days. The most cost effective way to start learning would be WebODM (which is an open source platform). Since it is open source there is a free version but that requires some command line experience. They offer an automatic download / install which costs $57. • @AZ-Drone
      @AZ-Drone  Před 5 lety

      The shooting angle depends on what you're trying to achieve. Shooting 90 degrees straight down will yield good 2D models of an area. You'll get good detail shooting straight down for a 2D Model / Map. But it won't be great for 3D models.
      When shooting straight down you won't get all of the detail from let's say the side of a building. If you put the gimbal at 70 degrees instead of 90 degrees you'll now get the sides of a building / structure. What shooting angle works best with what 3D Modeling application? That will depend on which app you're using and how you captured the initial images.
      From your question it sounds like I should do a new video on this in the near future, and I will. Quick answer... If you want a 3D model with good detail you'll probably need to not shoot straight down (90 degrees) and do something more like 70 - 75 degrees. It will take experimentation.
      One more thing. If you check out Pix4D's capture application and go into their settings you will see that they setup the shooting angle at 70 degrees by default. So that gives you an idea of what Pix4D thinks will work with their modeling software.
      Hope this helps a little. :)

In DJI GS PRO the "shooting angle" has 3options:1- "Parallel to mainpath", 2-Perpendiculat to mainpath", 3-"course aligned". There is also another seperate setting where I can set the "gimbal pitch angle". So you see this where the confusion lies- between the "shooting angle" and "gimbal pitch angle". The DJI manual does a very poor job explaining this. I am pretty clear on the "gimbal pitch angle", it is the "shooting angle" that is confusing me( for example is it a pan angle or angle relative to the horizon)?

    • @AZ-Drone
      @AZ-Drone  Před 5 lety

      @@vracan I'm sorry for adding to the confusion. And yes, it's confusing. I thought you were just talking about gimbal pitch angle. My apologies, and now I will hopefully clear up your confusion and hopefully you'll get it (took me a bit too).
      GS Pro used to have only 2 options. Parallel and Perpendicular to the path. Coursed aligned is new with the latest version, and the one I use for doing models. Lets say you make a grid mission and that mission has your drone starting from the south and flying north. It used to be that you could only use parallel or perpendicular.
      The Parallel setting would have the drone camera facing North (since you started from the south). The camera would stay pointed to the north to the end of its first line. Getting to the northern most point the drone would then move over to the next line and fly backwards with the camera still facing north! That didn’t work well if you were trying to do a 3D model, as the camera would miss details that you could only get with the camera facing south.
      The Perpendicular setting in the same scenario (starting in the south heading north) would have the camera either facing 90 degrees to one side or the other. The drone would fly north, with the camera photographing east or west. After completing its first line to the north it would move to the next photographing in the same perpendicular direction. Once again, this means that the camera missed details in the other direction, and wouldn’t make a good 3D model again.
      Finally, with the release of the new GS Pro a few months ago they introduced Course Aligned. In the same scenario, starting south and heading north the camera would be facing North. However, in Course aligned when the drone got to the end of its first line, it would move over to the next line, turn 180 degrees, and head south with the camera pointing south as well. With course aligned you would get images in both directions, giving more details to stuff that it missed in the two previous setups.
      For doing good 3D models you want to do a full grid pattern. That way you get details on all sides. In the case of doing a higher end 3D model I actually create 2 missions. One mission going North & South with Course Aligned setup. One mission going East & West with Coursed Aligned again. You then take all of the images from both missions and render your 3D model with them.
      For the most detailed 3D models you’ll want to have 2 missions that create a grid pattern. You’ll also probably want to adjust the gimbal pitch angle to something other than 90 degrees (70 as I’d noted before is preferred by the Pix4D app).
      I really hope this helps. Bottom line? Parallel and Perpendicular were lacking full coverage of an area. Beyond 2D models I don't see any value in Parallel or Perpendicular. Course Aligned helped fix that issue in GS Pro and is the only setting I use when modeling. For me Parallel & Perpendicular are useless.
      Still, what would have been really nice is if they just created a mission type that created a full grid pattern off the bat. Map Pilot does that, Pix4D capture does it, Drone Deploy does it as well. For GS Pro, we have to make 2 missions.
      Please let me know if this helped.

I was now able to properly visualise what those 3 settings do and able to see the effects in gs pro much better just by changing the gimbal pitch angle to something else different from 90degrees. I was then able to actually see the effect of those 3 settings alot better. Course aligned is the only one as I can see that is useful to me for both 2D and 3D. I definitely don't want my drone to be flying backwards or sideways. I'm glad my answer helped. My next step was going to be doing a video outside with me behaving as the drone in the different modes. It would have looked like I was line dancing or something, and nobody wants to see that. :)
      Have a great day!

      Ground Station Pro is free, and will only show up in the App Store if you're using an iPad. They do have a couple of "pay for" upgrades that really aren't necessary at all.

      Your video opened the door to a much needed tool in my real estate business not to mention a few other areas. I'll be watching you on this and thank you for the thoroughness.

      Oh did I mention I put a shortcut to your video on my desktop and flew my first mission yesterday . Any thoughts on utilizing this further with real estate and stitching to bring the footage together as a whole.

      I think GS Pro can be very useful for making 2D models for larger properties. That gives you a whole new way to envision big acreage ranches, etc. Putting together the 2D models? Photoscan, Pix4D, Drone Deploy. All can create orthomosaic models.

    DJI is leaving its competitors in the dust in my opinion. Check out some of my DJI Drone videos, I will greatly appreciate that.

      Sorry for the delay in your comment popping up here. It was in CZcams's held for review. Just popped by your channel and I'll be checking out some of your videos today.

      What are you using that's $10 per month and up to 300 per mission?
