It seems to be that Heindall was the only one who got a glimpse of Kratos's actual past. When he is being choked, he stares directly into Kratos's eye's.
The only thing I can imagine kratos seeing in that moment was flash back to the other gods he killed that still haunt him. Heimdall seen those flashbacks all right before his very own death added to the list.
After that, it appears kratos attempts to gather himself quickly like usual. But this time he actually fumbles for a moment. Aswell if we step back a few moments, when he kneels up to look around, it seems he wasnt even aware of where he was for a mere few moments.

After Odin calling his sons useless, more than killing kratos Thor wanted to know that his sons died a worthy death. What else could be more of a worthy death than to die fighting a foreign god of war that destroyed an entire pantheon. Thats why he wants to see Kratos at his peak battle capabilities, constantly taunting him to go berserk. Once he realizes the strength of the enemy his sons fought, he is satisfied and he leaves.

He was clearly going to try and kill Atreus, so it’s completely justified. Plus, this is extremely tame compared to old Kratos. But when he slammed his head into the ground you could tell he was losing control. And I’m ngl that death was so satisfying, Modi wasn’t half as annoying as Heimdall. He is very similar to Hermes in the way that he was overconfident in the fight and underestimated Kratos. And the fact that he lost a limb.

@Nemenis Odin alone is far more powerful than Thor, and by extension, Kratos. Odin clearly was not afraid to belittle Thor because he was intelligent enough to break him down and make him subservient. Thor outclasses him in strength, but the mind is the greatest weapon. Odin is very deceptive and hides the true reach of his power through war, death, magic, etc.
He easily subdued both Kratos and Atreus during their fight, and Freya had to intervene for them to have a chance.
For perspective, Zeus is the top god on Earth. He's the ruler of humanity and his fellow Greek gods.
