DON’T Buy a Rolex Daytona Until You See This

  • The Daytona is not just one of Rolex’s, but luxury watchmaking’s, most popular watches. Despite its not inconsiderable £10,500 price-that’s more expensive than the cheapest new car on sale today, the Dacia Sandero-it flies off shelves like its more valuable than gold. Which it is. By double. People will spend that and more fighting to own this legend of a watch, but that doesn’t mean it’s perfect. Here are five annoying things about the Rolex Daytona.

    Two more...
    1. Why are there crown guards when the crown is protected by the pushers anyway, yet the pushers don't have any protection themselves?
    2. The minute counter (right subdial) does not have hashes for every minute, so '9' for example is 'not quite 10', rather than having a hash of its own. Irrelevant for 99% of current owners, but would be unacceptable back in the day when chronographs were actually used and needed to be accurately read.

    • @herbderb
      @herbderb Před 3 lety +5

      Your #2 is irrelevant. The minute counter jumps to the next minute. So 9 would be obvious even without it's own hash mark. If it's between 8 and 10 it is absolutely on 9. That means 9 minutes have elapsed and however many seconds the chrono seconds has counted. (I agree completely with point 1 though!) :)

    • @stewester
      @stewester Před 3 lety +3

      When I bought mine it sat in a secondhand dealer window in a plethora of about 60 watches including Brands and models that were all in the heavy hitter league and some of which are 3 or 4 times the cost of this today. It was the only one that called out at me- the rest were just a background blur. I went in and bought it. I could care less for marketing, hype, prices or what others thought. I knew nothing of them and could give two hoots today like then. Personally they are a mesmerising masterpiece. I’ve since added a JLC or two and a vintage KS all by the same method of selection. I pity those who need telling what to buy or need for some validation issues or because it’s flavour of the month. Good grief.

When I bought my Panerai 15 years ago, the AD had two Daytonas collecting dust in the case along with practically every other Rolex sport model. Now you can't find anything...
