Punishing but Slick - Black Myth: Wukong Review

- If the devil truly is in the detail, then we can go ahead and give Game Science all the appropriate plaudits now; because as well as being one of the most beautiful action games I’ve ever played, Black Myth: Wukong is no slouch when it comes to the freedom and experimentation its combat allows for - especially compared to the raft of other action RPGs that skew closely to the Soulslike formula that have recently released. It also does excellent justice by its source material - the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West - using this as a base from which to craft some seriously memorable boss fights, and an epic adventure that’s just as intriguing as it is obscure. While Black Myth: Wukong may not be the complete homerun those initial trailers led us to believe, its slick gameplay and engrossing mythology succeeded in keeping me gripped.

@@Romo69 No I’m with him, usually dubbed always sounds a little off to me when it comes to things like this. Just feels like the voices don’t match the characters . With some exceptions like solo leveling

Personally I’m not worried about bugs. Every major game for the most part will have issues on release. As long as the game itself is fun.

You can return to previous maps by selecting the travel option at a shrine and selecting the location. You can fast travel from shrine to shrine.
Imagine stopping Promised Consort Radahn for five seconds to just wail on him lol. This should also potentially help with you and the boss being low health, you're out of heals and he kills ya.

crazy, bro I heard about this game is like a museum, it has tons of hidden content waiting to be discovered during exploration, and even the boss fights are part of the hidden content. you must explore it patiently.

@@gambino48 Souls like genre is oversaturated market but thankfully this is not it. Action combat adventure with rpg elements like this has similarities only with resting, lvl up and bonfire and that's where similarities end in "souls-like" terms.
Soulslike is 2:16 not oversaturated by any menas , what games do we have soulslike not made by fromsoftware ? 3 games ? 4? Lies of p , lords of the fallen , and a few indies like tymesia @716m4
@@716m4 It also has a Dodge system similar to blood born, and most people refer to games that rely heavily on dodging with resting style bonfires and reviving on death at those resting spots as soul like, this game you don’t block unless it’s a projectile you rely solely on dodging

From this video game looks to be quite easy. Anyway performance seems to be solid, which is what i care about the most.
They adopt a dynamic difficulty setting apparently: the boss sequences unlock higher difficulty/abilities, the better you play the game. It helps a ton when it comes to replayability.
Worried about performance. Reviews seem fair but Vague stories, unguided exploration & hidden items are overlooked or praised in fromsoft games… suddenly it’s an issue here 🤷♂️
That’s because Miyazaki fanboys clap like seals whenever he releases the same copy paste game with little improvement and have to show their loyalty with inflated review scores.

losing runes/souls on every death - not fun, just tedious
Clunky ass controls like trying to jump
Dated menu designs
Unguided exploration
Looking at CZcams guides constantly
Basically little to no story, just mostly lore

Finally the "soulslike soulslike soulslike" even if it looked more like a god of war stopped. I'll have lot's of fun when the next god of war trailer is out and I'll be spamming soulslike form 5 to 5 minutes too.
Only western reviewers will bemoan the lack of other weapons in this game. This is Sun Wukong for goodness sake, there will always only be one weapon of choice.

Exactly, it's like saying Witcher can't use staves. It's based on the lore, and even if it wasn't, realistically, a person would always be specialised in one type of weapon only. As the saying goes, it's all about sharpening the blade, than being a master of all weapons.
Definitely playing this game in Chinese.

I loved Kung Fu and Martial Arts films especially ones with Kung Fu portrayed in them.
I watched many films which starred "The Monkey King".
I remember really getting into DBZ because it was it's own version of "The Monkey King" to me.
The day they announced a new upcoming "Monkey King" game... I didn't have to ask myself if it would be good.

Seems to me that in terms of story and side quests it's gonna be disappointing. Looks like and endless boss fight, with no memorable dialogue, interesting villain, or some hard or deep choices. But being the first game this studio made we can probably excuse it, if the fight, bosses and the world are excellent. I got it for free with the rtx 40 bundle so i will give it a shot, even though I'm not a fan of souls like games.

Glad this is soulslike. Hard boss fights. Finished elden ring DLC. looking forward to this game. I hope its HARD and doesnt hold your hand like stellar blade. God of war is too easy. sekero was great.

I guess it's probably right, the game is based on the story of journey to the west. Development might assume you know something already and they don't mention it in the game.😅

it is confirmed that Boss would have different dialog during the battle if you transform to certain enemy. (i.e.: if you transformed to an enemy that is boss's bro, the boss would say something else

I personally think it will be better to play (any) games with their original languages with the sub that you can understand. Just to feel a bit more of what the creator wants to deliver via the Tone or emotion of the audio
Personally, I'm offended that there were no purple-haired pansexual, multi-gendered characters in the game. Like, c'mon guys... this is 2024, we are more developed and enlightened than those straight-white men who controlled everything before.
One thing I think would’ve been cool is if they kept the myth where each of His transformations had it own life, so every time you died if you were transformed you just switch back. Like wild shaping in D&D

Well people keep saying “ITS NOT A SOULS LIKE” but it does have the same checkpoint/bonfire system, losing points on death, souls like level design, and dodge attack reaction gameplay. But besides that stuff it’s not a souls.
