How Stonewall Became Famous | Op-Docs

- Ever since the 1969 riots on the streets outside New York City’s Stonewall Inn, L.G.B.T.Q. communities have gathered there to express their joy, their anger, their pain and their power.
Few places are so tightly identified with the birth of a movement as the Stonewall Inn and the streets that surround it, in the downtown Manhattan neighborhood of Greenwich Village. This month marks 50 years since the Stonewall riot, which galvanized a half-century of activism and agitation for L.G.B.T. rights and made Stonewall a recurring stage for public protest, grieving and celebration.
Cheryl Furjanic’s new Op-Doc, “Stonewall: The Making of a Monument” traces that history, exploring the process by which a chaotic street fight in protest of police brutality has been engraved into history in the form of a national monument. Furjanic’s film, built from a chorus of voices and archival footage, is also a case study in how mainstream acceptance can, ironically, be a mixed blessing for political movements, as people struggle to control their own history.

If it wasn’t for these people, I would have been afraid for what is in store for my transgender son. The path ahead is still being forged, but my hope is that my son has a place in this world without discrimination and hate. I won’t stop fighting for peace, acceptance, and a happy life for him until I no longer can draw breath.
Kitterz Thank you for being so open and open-minded about your son. Not all parents are like you. Thank you! (Hugs)
I want to say,as a pansexual, good luck to you and your Son.
You are a remarkable person and your son is very lucky to have you!
French Anthony Actually, I’m lucky to have *him* because he and his sister are amazing and talented ppl. Even though sometimes I want to strangle them, they are really great kids.
Your son is already lucky to have a parent like you 💖
I just can't stop my tears watching this. Thank you to everyone who fought before us

God stated his opinion with AIDS.. same thing happened in exodus.. well same premise
Thank you for this and thank you for all who fought and continue to fight.
This is a very powerful doc and I hope it never gets taken down and that more people watch it. Thank you for making this.
Never forget our history. Great piece, thanks to those involved in putting this together.
Without knowing me you’all fought for my rights a long time ago, thank you from the bottom of my heart!!
what a beautiful and powerful op-doc. thank you for representing our history.
I am standing in the gym, bawling.
Adoption is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give their child. I could care less when someone tells me "we're pregnant!" But when I hear someone adopted a baby, I am like "I want to hear EVERY detail of your adoption story and making your family whole!"
I couldn't care for you, so I gave you an opportunity to go to a family that could.
Literally bawling in the middle of the night. What these people didn't know at the time is that their fight inspired LGBTQ all over the world. From a person who has lived in a country all the way on the other side of the planet, thank you.
I will never understand how someone can have a problem with someones sexual orientation?? I was brought up in a catholic house, Im married with a son, And when that topic comes up saying it’s “wrong” wrong how why are people so worried about someone elses sexual preference why do people think they can dictate who someone chooses to love? All love is accepted
Thank you for this !!! The young generation need to know about Stonewall. I am so proud I've seen Sylvia Rivera, Marsha P. Johnson and Barack Obama.
Wtf did Obama do to make you so proud?
Why just Rivera and Johnson? Many, many men and women did their part
@kid flash channel I assume you are a child because that comment was very juvenile
@@goodgirlkay He's the first president to openly be an ally. The man who was in the most powerful position in the world supported those who are hounded for something they cant change.
After watching this. It gave me a new appreciation for the fight , because who knew that we actually did fight and it was in words but also in actions. Thank you for all you've done to help move us forward.
This is more relevant than ever! Thanks for putting this inspiring clip out there. And lets stay vigilant, united and strong.
Im crying at 2 am
Powerful! Brought me to tears!
This was amazing. Thank you!
Thank you all who fought for us.
Being a bisexual girl, the people who fought and continue to fight have changed the lives of so many. Thank you for making this about our history and thank you to all those who stood up to people who said they were wrong for loving who they loved.
Just beautiful ! Thank you .

This is so inspiring.
Every city has a spot like this. A dark park, a bar...and there´s where culture grows, you know...
whats significant about stonewall is that these are some of the very first moments in history where the lgbt community fought back against their oppression
@@Kalopazia no it isn't there where lgbt rights movements long before stonewall
Beautifully well done, but why nothing has been said about Marsha Johnson?
Marsha, while she was a persistent fighter, denied credit for the first brick. First shot glass, first stone, whichever story you hear.
Well done documentary!
absolutely amazing ❤️
A beautiful story. Thank you Marsha, Silvia and everyone who paved our path with fight. We wouldn't be able to get here without you. 💘🏳️🌈

I'm not even an american lgbt person but something hit me hard when they played that recording of marsha at around the 3:30 mark. something about being able to listen to the voice of a legend hits diff
Very moving video
Made me tear up.
In 1969 there were 3 TV networks none of which reported on Stonewall. The country depended on those networks and their local city newspaper and maybe the state newspaper of record. If any of those newspapers carried a story about Stonewall, it would have been a filler or 'news of the weird'. I only found out about it because I was in college and found the story in the Village Voice at the college library. I don't think that most of the country really found out about it until the student groups at colleges started having Stonewall anniversary events.
They (Marsha and Sylvia) were on the front lines fighting the police in defense of us, and we didn't accept them. We were afraid they would complicate our call for justice/equality because the straight community was opposed to who they were.....this is our history and we should learn from it. Bless Marsha and Sylvia 🙏 RIP
always love me some sylvia rivera.. wish somebody would do a proper full length doc of her life.
gtfo nobody is requiring you to watch
We don't need a parade - we need to march. In the name of LOVE we are not the one's commiting acts of violence....
You really have got to moderate this comment section.
It's because of those brave men and women who fought for us then that we can proudly call ourselves part of the LGBT community today🏳️🌈
such a nice movie
Excellent. A fine documentary on the story of the Stonewall and the beginnings of the LGBTQ+ Rights Movement.

One more little big point: Anita Hill, beauty-pageant winner and known merely as a spokeswoman
for Oranges via Advertisements, became a Spokeswoman who declared: “Homosexuals should NOT be
allowed to teach our children! “
Yet, because women were fired upon committing the ‘Act of Marriage’...who HAD taught America’s children,
in the 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s and 1950’s...?!
This was a profound coming together of these #ChristianFundamentalists...#Fascism, right now.
Subversively Surreal Hi, you meant Anita Bryant. Everything else is dead on:
It was Anita Bryant....not Anita Hill.....typical liberal who does not know jack but has an opinion on
just about everything.....you loud mouthed twit!!!!!
The movement did not happen in a vacuum. It has to be seen in the context of the anti-war movement.
It prob did make them braver in the sense of protest and marches, but the movement still would have happened anyway
this video fails to address why this building was raided though :/

I grew up well with bio parents yet with growing pains like everyone....In my life I have met some really accomplished as well as regular people who were adopted, so I think people should just be grateful that they met up with parents who wanted them and were in the position to care for them. I have also met people who grew up with abusive biological parents. Melodramas are just a waste of time. Always move on and pay it forward. Reliving difficult circumstances is futile. The past is done, the future unknown...all we have is the moment of now...🤓
I don't understand what that has to do with stonewall
@@ziejackson6236 I guess its autoplays fault , there is another docu about adoption in Korea. As I saw it as well, it comes before this.
hey Ava, wrong video. But to your comment- You are not adopted, you do not understand. And I did not see anyone in the video talking bad about their adoption parents. It just is a great loss and a traumatic experience. No matter how well you will have it with you adopting parents. And as a Korean and not white in a white family and community must also be an alienating experience or at least has the potential to do so.
Being adopted myself - I think it is important to be able to talk about your experiences. I appreciated the docu vey much.
@@verenas3536 oh that makes sense thanks for clearing that up

fight for freedom and justice is not hard in the USA compared to other countries
It is as hard as the majoritarian side makes it. Ranges from society to society. Granted the HK activists against Chinese oppression have it the hardest right now, but to fight against oppression is hard.

It use to be about personal acceptance and being left to live your life, now it’s about compliance, making churches comply, making cake shops comply, forcing people to participate.

Not to be a little rude but how would they make babies now? Since LBGTQ is still a thing?
Samantha Shimmer239587 Not rude but pretty dumb.
The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.
Samantha Shimmer239587
Where is there a requirement that one must make babies?
For those who do choose to have families, there is adoption, in vitro fertilization, or surrogacy.
It's called UVI and surrogacy. Only the trans in LGBTQ often become barren because of hormone therapy and surgery. The LGBQ can all reproduce.
Not everyone is required to have children. Many straight people are incapable of that. But to answer your question, some people adopt, artificially inseminate or have a surrogate.

Rebel General in the America Civil War
Certify Undeadrose confederate general*** they are known for losing the war that they started over slavery.
Stonewall Jackson ?
Let us not judge these people leave it to God to decide their fate
God doesn't exist.
If you really thought that you wouldn’t have made that comment.
If God is truly all loving as people claim, then he would welcome them into heaven with open arms. Otherwise, he is not all loving.
Sin is fun for a short time.Eternity is at stake.Only Jesus can offer salvation,He loves all he can forgive all sin .While we're alive have a chance to make into God's kingdom.Jesus died for sinners .............The only Hallowed Ground is where Jesus was crucified their he won the battle.Against Satan ..........Their is a spiritual battle that can only won by the blood of Jesus ...............................

Today's NYT libigoq propaganda moment.
Michel Normandin it’s an OP-DOC, or OPINION documentary. This allows people to speak their voices, and is not meant to represent the NYT. Also, this is mostly a historical thing and not an opinion piece.
