  • Hey Everyone,
    In this video, I share my experience of green laning in Derbyshire with my partner Mike. We both rode a Royal Enfield Himalayan 411, a versatile bike that can handle any terrain.
    I'm not a natural offroader as you know, but I wanted to challenge myself and see the beautiful scenery of Derbyshire.
    Mike was my guide and he showed me some of the toughest green lanes in the area. It was a struggle, but also a lot of fun!
    Watch the video to see how we did and what I learned along the way. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more videos like this!
    I hope you enjoy this vlog!

    Off road riding requires you to become comfortable with the bike moving under you, I have never got used to it, hence I am crap off road. I think it is a skill that really does benefit from being learnt early, ie as a kid, otherwise it very hard to feel happy about the bike slipping/sliding and moving under you. I think you did very well, much better than I would. Oh and ignoring the front brake is essential, but a hard habit to break. It's very brave and honest of you to post a video that shows you struggling with something, a lot of youtubers wouldn't do it, well done

      @fat_biker Před 5 měsíci +2

      I did the BMW offroad skills course way back which was transformative for me. I learned a lot about letting the bike move under me & being comfortable with that, riding standing up, & the amazing things you could do offroad on the old F650 single they were using at the time. I also learned that I really wanted to ride offroad on a small trail bike if possible - & when I bought one, it was _so_ easy to ride offroad compared with the F650....

      @AndrewPoole01 Před 5 měsíci +2

      Your comment is great and heart felt couldn’t agree more. Just need to set the record straight on the ignoring the front brake bit. Take any Enduro or ADV training and you quickly learn just how important the front brake is offroad and how much it is used at the right moment. But it Is still counter intuitive I will grant you that.

      You are absolutely spot on! I have ridden Motocross since I was 11. Don't get psyched out riding offroad. Just look far ahead and never look down at the front wheel. Relax and let the bike deal with what's under your feet. Your focus should be an absolute minimum 50 feet ahead. Speed is your friend because it forces you to look ahead and lets the bike roll over crap. Too slow, you will look down at the front wheel and just auger in. Practice makes perfect here.

  • @ttrguy9952
    @ttrguy9952 Před 5 měsíci +3

    The best way to conquer this type of terrain is more speed and pointing the bike at the smoother parts. Going slow makes you focus on the ground in front of you. Looking down will make you go there. Riding faster makes you look up and ahead letting the bike do it's thing under you. Scary at first but once you get the hang of it, it becomes like walking on a crooked sidewalk. All in all, they did a fantastic job riding here! Many Kudos! 👍👍

    I read that you are 162 cm tall. This is a problem for many people who would like to ride a bike on the road. Off-road is much worse and you were on a trail with rocks, mud and everything you can find on an off-road trail. I've read many comments about "you should do this, you should do that." I can't say anything about those people because I don't know them, but... you were riding an almost 200kg bike, acceptable off-road, but it has 25hp, the front suspension is quite bad, and it's probably for someone who is at least 175cm tall as the seat height is 80cm. You are really brave! Nothin 'else to say. Thanks for the video!

    Everyone thinks that at one point. "I am not cut out for this" But perseverance will make you tougher and more skilled. I thought the same thing the first time I drove an 18-wheeler out of my home state. I had never driven over a mountain let alone in something that weighs 80.000 pounds. 15 years later, I retired with a large bank account and over 1 million miles with no crashes or violations.

    I have found the Himalayan 1st gear curiously high geared especially when you are trying to navigate rough stuff, result being it is enclines to stall out in those most inappropriate moments, like up a stoney area or in the middle of a river crossing, the solution I have come up with in difficult spots is feather the clutch and this helps to keep the revs up, as a result you will get through and not stall out in the worst places, give it a go, you’ll get there don’t give up, it’s basically a confidence thing, the more time in the saddle the better you’ll get, then your nerves will calm down, happy trails.😊

    I went out with the RE club on my Himmy earlier in the month on the lanes above Winster. I can't say i enjoyed it as much as the tarmac ( grass down the middle) type lanes - they are much more relaxing, less effort, less risk and you can actually enjoy the view ! Each to their own and well done on your experience.

    Great video Kate :) its interesting watching an i think its more realistic for most trail riders we get conditioned that everyone is pol or a Dakar Rider. Everyone starts with the same level an ability at the beginning
    Not the easiest of lanes on a heavy bike like the Himalayan with those tyres.
    If you ever get a chance to have a go on something like a 300 Rally with the level 1 suspension from Rally Raid i think you would enjoy it as its 50kg lighter than the Himalayan, i bought one after I rejected my Himalayan for refund with the parts failiures reliability and the parts availabilty issues under warranty. An tbh it was night an day in performance. Both on an off road, twice as fast on the 0-60 better wind protection, 6th gear for the motorway an on the green lanes the whole package worked better as it was more managable.
    What i missed was the low down grunt from the longstroke but it required a different riding style another big difference was how narrow the crf was to the Himalayan when standing a much more natural standing position as the bikes not as wide between the thighs. Seats were equally as horrendous on both bikes.
    Ultimately i deciced i didnt enjoy green laning as much as my road based adventure stuff.
    I was learning to cope with the nerve iniury at the time in my neck but one thing i found helped was plenty of breaks really helped if it meant a 20 min break or an hour thats what id take an if something got a bit to much turn round n go back another day i was riding solo though so had to keep that in mind always another day an its not worth riding into a fall through exhaustion.
    One thing that super helped as well was getting as much airflow as possible through vents layering an having good airflow into my helmet, first time i didnt realise that 2nd time was way more enjoyable.
    Look forward to seeing the next video really enjoying the format of them.
    Ill always have a soft spot for the Himalayan 411 as I think it had the right recipe within the engine being a longstroke its just a shame the parts issues let it down an a shame the new 450 doesnt have that engine configuration any more.
    Having bought 390 ktms, the Himmy n the 300 Rally i just wish RE had focused on loosing the weight out of it rather than all the tech and water cooling thats been added, id take 50kg less in weight any day of the week when green laning.

    Well done Kate and Mike! I'm not convinced the old Himalayan is the best bet for a green lane newb. Not that it isn't a capable bike, and for a confident rider it will fairly fly up those type of lanes....something like an old Yamaha Serrow or the 200 Beta Alp (with trials tyres) would be ideal as they're much lighter bikes. Half the problem is worrying about dropping the bike, which, means you tend to tense up, making the entire process more tiring. A few more days out and you'll be up there with Billy Bolt and Graham Jarvis.....😉

    It is kinda odd... not all, but most water "features" I've found on trails, can be muddy as hell either end, but in the water, they are fine. Water cleans... water is our friend! 😀 (except when it isn't... and then it is an utter twit!) 😀
    People just don't realise quite how tiring trail riding can be!
    Finger cramp will ruin a day... I was out with Mr Fish a while back and my finger cramped up and made my hand whisky throttle the bike... I physically had to remove my finger from the bars with my other hand, it wouldn't let go... scared the hell outta me! 😀 All good after some fluids and sugars though.
    Another tip (not that I was asked for them...) I dress for the trails, not the roads when out laning. It means I will absolutely be cold, possibly too cold when on the road, but when on the trails, I am at a good temperature, so can cope better. It is a balance though, and if you need to ride a LOT of road miles, then layers are a good plan, so you can remove them on the trails.
    Not that I or anyone has ever thought it about you Kate, but you 100% are most definitely not a plastic biker! I do wish I had a Mike when I was learning all this stuff... Thankfully my mate Big_Pezza showed me the ropes though 🙂
    Can't wait for part 3 🙂

    Before too long you will want to go on a world green lane trip of a lifetime! Maybe? NO
    It's good practice for when the New Himalayan is available and ride the same lanes ... just kidding.
    As always your commentary while riding is 100% truthful.

    For what they are , those Himalayan's look like they take a bit of the rough stuff very well.........

    I think you might want to try something like a crf 300.
    The himalayan although really good might be a bit heavy. It's more a 50/50 dual sport.
    Just for doing these trails it's worth trying it with something lighter.

    Well, I’ve been vetoed on any suggestion of going laning after this! You’ll have to get a couple of Yamaha wr250 to play with. Those Himalayans aren’t light!

    I owned a Himalayan and never took it off road . Not my cup of tea. I enjoyed 12,000 miles on pavement . I loved the bike but traded up to a Triumph Tiger 660, I miss that Himalayan !

    Being from the US, Green Lane is a newish term. Looks mostly brown and muddy to me! 😅 I think the closest US term for that sort of path would be a fire road?

    I'm totally impressed by your determination to do something way out of your comfort zone. You should be extremely proud of yourself you really should. To me, it looks like the worst bike day out ever! To me, it doesn't look enjoyable at all. It proves without doubt, how much you love Mike. I truly hope he recognises this. It's a billion times worse than having to sit through a chick flick! And then some! ❤

    I don't doubt your competence on a motorcycle, but I believe you to be too short for this vehicle & it's weight limit under such circumstances. You might have a better time on a lower more agile (lighter) machine (where you can put both feet down comfortably) for your convenience. Just because it's good for Mikes stature & personal weight, doesn't necessarily mean its the best bike for your green lane experience.
    I conceed that I've never taken to such rough tracks through countryside myself, so must defer to your superior knowledge under these conditions however, the panic in your voice & heavy breathing into the microphone leave me praying for your safe completion of this extreme journey.

    If you could borrow a proper enduro bike with decent tyres and tackle these lanes you would probably surprise yourself at your ability. A 250cc or 350cc would be more than enough, both would be much lighter than the 411, they would have more power which if used appropriately would benefit you. The downside is they are tall with a seat height of about 960mm but it may be worth a go?

    Most of the Indian people do this kind of trip every day in a 100 or 110 cc commuter motorcycle with ease with slippers on.. Feel pity she is out of breath..but good thing is that she tried 😂😂😂
