    I'm so glad somebody is talking about this! To me, Whammy House is such a toxic environment for those who outperforms in specific skillsets that might be beneficial for L's work (I'm being specific here because if I remember correctly, Linda, an art genius, seems to not have been part of this "elite" selection). They're children who were pitched against each other and forced to grow into a desirable mold. While the psychology of Mello, comprising of insecurities and inferiority complex, is a significant driving factor in the story, there are many subtle hints to Near's mental struggle with the idea of filling L's shoes as well.
    Near is significantly less initiative than both Mello and L, and in the one-shot that takes place one year after the end of the original series, it is suggested that the reason why he often hesitates is because he's trying to come up with the option that L would take, not being able to come to his own term and thinking of himself as his own person. His team eventually gives him the encouragement to go with what HE thinks rather than what L thinks, and that seems to have been a pivotal moment for his character. In the latest one-shot, Near's appearance seems quite different, he looks like he's grown physically, his hair has grown very long, and he's sometimes shown in more open and relaxed positions than he's shown before. I think the change in appearance and behavior may signify Near being more comfortable with himself and not the idea of being L's successor.
    It is only unfortunate that the other Whammy kids we know of never got to work through their issues.

    Wammy's house supports the children living in it in developing any talents or gifts they may have. While creating a successor for L is an important and maybe even primary purpose for it, keep in mind that there were only two children in line for that at any given time as far as we know.
    While I can certainly see pressure (intentional on the part of Wammy's house staff or not) playing a part in the problems of the characters you mentioned, you also need to keep in mind that they are in an orphanage for a reason. Each of these children has a story we do not know - all we know for sure is that they lost their parents at some point.
    With BB, there is also the matter of him being born with Shinigami eyes. L and Near both exhibit behaviors associated with Aspergers or similar forms of autism - which would be something they were born with, not a result of anything that happened at Wammy's house.
    We also know that at least one of the children who were not in line to be a successor to L, Linda, is a successful artist at the time of the final act.

    • @KatoBeyond
      @KatoBeyond  Před 6 lety +69

      This is mostly true, but don't forget that, while 2 of the Wammy's House children we know grow up to be quite successful, the rest of them are dead. Almost all of them died in the pursuit of L's legacy, in a manner of speaking. Also, all of the Wammy's House students are supposed to be successors to L, but only one of them can be named the heir. The fact that all of these kids are coming in with emotional baggage is even more unsettling, tbh. I do consider it a necessary evil, as without Wammy's House, Kira would have definitely won, but that doesn't mean it's without problems either.

      @efeyorutken4480 Před 4 lety +19

      Most certainly. However as far as i can understand the conditions were much harsher in terms of training for those who are Ls successors. I agree that the shinigami eyes and probable autism has nothing to do with the final outcome for the characters. But the possible harsh training might have caused the characters to act their differences and capabilities in a less socailly acceptable way, being a gang member at age 15 and not giving to damns about people dying and all

    A and BB are actually referred to as the "second generation." Which is fair. The really bizarre thing is that Mello-as-narrator identifies himself as a part of the "fourth generation." I mean... you COULD say there's a "third generation", but I seriously question the idea of Mello implicitly recognizing it as such.

    Ok so this is a very interesting topic and one not a lot of people discuss relating to the series and you guys did a really good job of talking about it, and I honestly think its a really interesting aspect of the show and I think you are right when you say the world kind of needs L to keep it from being destroyed. Still the idea of grooming success at the expense of the child being groomed can be considered morally grey which really intrigues me considering the shows use of grey morals through its entirety. Whether you wanted L or light or near or mellow to win there were always questionable aspects to each person and their motives. It makes you think about how everyone has a perceived idea of whats right and wrong and how no matter what someone will always have different view of life depending on circumstance. That's part of why i love how complex this show can get.

  • @treceslez
    @treceslez Před 4 lety +31

    Wait a minute, was L even the first L? Or was L Lawliet the succesor of a previous L? Because L was in his mid-late twenties when he died, and he probably started to work as a detective as young as Near, who was 17-18 (at least when he officially started working in the Kira case). We don't know the age of BB and A, but being from the first generation one would assume they were older than Near and Mello, early twenties maybe? So the age gap between all of them isn't that big. Wouldn't that leave little to no space for Watari to come up with this idea of recruiting child genuises to one day take over the name of L if L Lawliet was indeed the first L? Or did Watari had this all planned since L was a little kid (maybe even before that) and started working on recruiting other kids to one day become the next L? And if the answer to the last question is yes that's kinda messed up, because that would mean L didn't choose to become well, L, but was instead coerced into becoming L, because let's be real, no kid is gonna come up with a plan like that no matter how much of a genius they are. Child genuises are still very much children.
    Edit: Just to add that L in his mid twenties was already a lengend among the police all over the world, the detective they would go to when cases got too difficult, and saying that he started working when he was in his late teens, 17-18, would leave him with around nine years (probably less because he was already a legend before the Kira case) to make L's name relevant which can seem like a lot but given his line of work it isn't a lot really if you take into account that some cases may take months, even years, to get solved. One can argue that L was a genius and solved the cases pretty quickly, but Near who also was a genius took around half a year to solve one case (not the Kira one). I don't know, it just doesn't add up, maybe it's just that I'm sleep deprived and thinking too much.

      I really love this comment, thank you. I did make a video about Death Note trivia called "10 Things You Didn't Know About Death Note" or something to that effect where I discussed a two different one-shot manga about L's life. One of which was about him growing up in Wammy's House. According to that source, Wammy's House was a normal orphanage before L grew up and decided to convince Watari to make it a school for gifted orphans to find his successor.

    • @user-ji5fm5pk6w
      @user-ji5fm5pk6w Před 3 lety +8

      There is a little extra chapter in the manga about LActually there are two but the one related to the question is.I think it's only 4-5 pages and gives a quick glimpse in L's growth. As he was growing up he was solving more and more complicated games, used the internet while it was still very new and did the best investment s for watari. So one day he thought that a murder case was more difficult than any puzzle or game and watari said sth like his eyes shined. He solved the case and watari said that from this day I knew what path I would walk with L. So, I believe it was the first L and by his face in the last page he seems like he is a young teen . I would say he was 14-15 when he started solving cases . So ~10-11 years before the Kira case.Maybe after the first years wammy decided to train all new kids in the orphanage towards L's path. Yeah it's not a long time but hey it's a manga!

    I’ve never read that Ohba accepted it as cannon, only that he accepted the story as being well done. Obviously the murder case works because even L mentions it, but the rest about the orphanage doesn’t. But then I shouldn’t be surprised, he contradicts his own writing, one minute having Near say L was the only person both he and Mello respected, and cared enough about to make sure he finished the case the way L would have wanted him to,and creating a figure and mask in his image, and then saying later that he never met the man and only spoke with him thru the computer. How does that work? Neither makes sense to me, but that’s one of the things I do like about Death Note...it has ways of keeping people talking and debating about it all these years later.

    L failed to reach a logical conclusion to help him solve the Kira case. When he noticed Kira doing the experiments influencing their behavior he should have realized those influences could be proof of a suicide occurrence also being included in Kira's repertoire. The problem with Another Note (not canon) and this theory is it totally ignores the fact that Wammy's house existed way before L, so it was NOT begun in order to find another L. That and the fact that there are many Wammy's Houses around the world BEFORE L. Obviously once L was so successful and his loss would have to be filled, they began grooming replacements. I hate the fact that Wammy and his orphanage and L have been painted with such an ugly brush which has no origin in the original. A and BB are simply creations in a glorified fan fiction that the original creators thought was a great story and gave their consent to.
