Reviewing a Terrible Conservative Comedy About Bernie Sanders

  • Buckle up everyone, this is not going to be an easy movie to talk about.
Free Lunch Express is...technically a movie. About Bernie Sanders. Kind of. It's really just a cheap caricature, the sort you'd expect in a bad right wing satire. Which is exactly what this movie is. But let's not pretend Bernie Sanders is some saintly figure we can't laugh at. If someone can poke fun at him in a funny way, there's no harm in that, right? Well, that's where this movie falls apart. Not a single moment can be described as "funny", and even at 80 minutes, manages to be a complete waste of time.
My little review compares it to some other satirical biopics about politicians, all of which offer more realistic portrayals of their subjects (except maybe the last one) and all of which are better movies. Some moreso than others.

I don't think conservatives get humor. The point of a satire isn't to make stuff up, it's to show the truth. When Steven Colbert say "Facts have a well-known liberal bias", it's not funny just because it's absurd, it's funny because conservatives really do accuse everything and everyone who gives you the truth whether they be journalists, teachers or scientists of having a liberal bias. It's not funny because he is playing a wacky absurd character, it's funny because it illustrates how absurd those people are in real life.

The tragedy of this pitiful attempt at comedy is that Bernie is actually super easy to make fun of. He's a goofy caricature with a bombastic oratory style, and with the tiniest bit of sympathy for the subject, just reading a quote with a decent impression can get a laugh.
The fact that they leaned so hard into the hatred, that they couldn't even grab some of that low-hanging fruit, is a testament to how diametrically opposed the conservative mindset is to comedy. If, instead of actively trying to smear him (and randomly Ben and Jerry??), they had just engaged in hyperbole and portrayed him as a pie in the sky idealist, they could have made a competent parody, even if their message didn't really hold up. But they couldn't do that, because admitting to Bernie's humanity would make people more sympathetic to him and then they might give his ideas a chance. The movie was destined to be a failure before they even put pen to paper, because they decided to use it as an attack on Bernie (and his horny, dead parents?!) instead of an honest critique or even just a bare bones comedy, poking fun at the man without any deeper meaning. But no, they had the hubris to think they could take down a senator with a shitty D-List movie that would never even make it to theatres.
It's a classic Greek tragedy: like Icarus, with his wings made of hatred, and jokes that were already stale in the 50's, flying too close to an objective audience.

They don't trust government and see it as slow and ineffective at best and corrupt at its worst. It's similar to left-wing people not trusting private businesses. Another aspect is trust in society and other people. How much do they trust other people not to take advantage of them, so they prefer a lower degree of reliance on society and a greater degree of personal independence from society. In a sense, an individual has a right to isolate oneself from the rest of society and live life on one's own with minimal interaction with government and society. This would also involve a lower taxation and keeping more money to spend as they wish. This is how I'd explain the beliefs of American conservatives.

To hear kids in 1989 be called those is nothing short of surreal. Yes, sometimes parents give their children their own names, but that's usually only when the name sounds timeless. However the core of a good joke is how truth the joke is, nothing wrong with exagerate or stretch a bit but the core should be true. This movie fails to deliver simply cause most of it is not an exagerated version of the life of Bernie Sanders is a how conservatives imagine the life of Bernie should be, so at the core is just how they SEE it, not how it is, ergo is not only based on a lying premise, but also in a bad faith one. If this movie shows something is that how hard it is to have a consistant reasonable critique about Bernie, so in order to mock him they have to rely on lies for it. Quite ironic if You ask me, since current right wingers are fully embracing conspiracy theories.

Good review. I saw "The Death Of Stalin" and "The Art Of The Deal" and enjoyed them, especially "The Death Of Stalin".
I could add another satirical biopic you might have never heard of, the German made-for-TV-movie "Der Minister" (released also with its promotion title "The Plagiator"), a satire about former German minister of economy and later of defense, Karl-Theodorzu Guttenberg, who was very popular in Germany but resigned in 2011 after it was discovered that he plagiated a lot in his doctor dissertation. The movie was released 2 years after that. It was very funny, fresh and unusual and also took liberties in portraying the lives, especially by changing the names. Guttenberg was named "Franz Ferdinand von und zu Donnersberg", Angela Merkel became "Angela Murkel", Guttenberg's best buddy and Editor in chief of the newspaper "Bild" Kai Dickmann became "Jan Breitmann" etc. And they all looked very close to their real-life prototypes. In the movie they recreated many newspaper articles, interviews, speeches and, like the original prototypes, joke from other sources to have this plagiatism feeling, like jokes from the British show "Yes Minister". The movie added a new character, a struggling writer who was his best friend and became Donnersberg ghostwriter. Guttenberg is portrayed as a guy who always have to show off. He has to fit the aristocratic shoes his family had over the years and has to be presented as a man. Especially since he is not interested in politics and has no experience in his field. But still he is not shown as a one-sided figure. He has a character and a motivation in this movie. And not to forget: The movie has great actors like Katharina Thalbach as Merkel (Thalbach is famous in Germany and as a teen was also in the 1970s-movie "The Thin Drum")

Something about it is revealing. Look, most lives are boring, Even people that achieve something great are boring. Interesting lives are something odd to Say the least, and one interesting enough to be a good movie is Even weirder.
Anyways, here You can draw a few more lines. There's lives that are worth Telling in a movie not just because they did something interesting but also cause they did something good for people and thats something this movie doesn't understand.
For example, lets Say Pablo Escobar, his life is interesting of course, in a Bad sense, but interesting enough to be a movie, series documentary and so on. By making a movie about it the makers know that the guy was a terrible person, is not an homage by any means, just a real life story worth telling. Trump fits the same thing, he is a horrible human being, however his administration was so fucking insane that his shitshow could be easy material for satire. But Sanders is not worth the same threatment, some late night hosts and comedians do mock a few of his traits, like the way he speaks and that time he used those mitten gloves and became a meme, but, for the most part thats just light stuff, there's not much of satire material to mock Bernie.
