- In this Howard Hughes Medical Institute program, Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, host of the PBS program NOVA scienceNOW and director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, sits down with Dr. Thomas Cech, president of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, to discuss his own illuminating experiences as a graduate student, and how he became interested in science. Tyson also discusses his outreach success in making science accessible to the general public.
I'm taking journalism and physics just because he made me aware of the need to make science accessible to a wider audience. Dr. Tyson has taught me so much, not just about science or scientific discoveries, but about the communication of scientific ideas. If we had 100 more of him we would not have enough.

I love that this conversation begins with a commentary on dead-ends when I just so happen to be following down yet another Neil deGrasse Tyson rabbit hole on CZcams only to discover this gem from twelve years ago, realizing that there really are no dead-ends as far as Neil's brilliance is concerned.
I've learned more from this man about the universe, and science in general, than I have collectively from every other person on earth that I've ever met or seen. Not only is he an educator, but he is so passionate that he inspires you to want to learn everything you possibly can about the universe around you. How he's only made Time's Most Influential People list once in his lifetime, more than thirteen years ago, is astounding to me. He very well may be the most influential, in terms of science education and science literacy, that has ever lived.
Moreover, he's brought millions into the fold who would otherwise have never known that they were intellectually capable of understanding the sciences. He is the proverbial rising tide that lifts all boats as far as the general public's appreciation for the cosmos is concerned, and as much recognition as we think he gets -- he deserves so much more.
Dr. Tyson is every bit as good a comedian as he is an astrophysicists. I so much enjoy listening to him, as much for his wonderful humor and presentation as the fascinating information he shares.

1:06:19 most of them look so engaged, people usually lose focus an hour into listening to somebody, that's how brilliant Neil Degrasse Tyson is. I love his enthusiasm so much! He knows how to share his own excitement for something with you.
He had my full attention the entire time. In fact, time seemed to fly, and I was a bit sorry when it came to an end.

This was 11 years ago, all these graduate students are active members of the scientific community now. That's awesome 😂 👍
Plus, at the time of this interview, astronomers had only confirmed the existence, through inference, or, "indirectly," of approximately 300 extrasolar planets.
But now, with the data from missions like the Kepler Space Telescope, etc., the number of confirmed extrasolar planets has increased to over 3,000.
And, that number has continued to grow steadily and relentlessly with superceding observations and science missions.
In other words; it's an extremely exciting time to be alive. 🌎

This is the only time I've ever heard Tyson talk about race, which I like. I like it because he never even alludes to the subject under normal circumstances so whenever I see him on TV, or whatever, I don't think of him as a smart, black, accomplished scientist, I think of him as a smart, accomplished scientist. The fact that he's black is, in fact, totally irrelevant. It's irrelevant unless someone makes a big deal about it, and if this were a perfect world no one ever would. That's the kind of equality that people could only dream of during the civil rights era. The kind of equality where no one ever even thinks to describe Neil deGrasse Tyson by the way he looks. Instead he's Neil deGrasse Tyson, phd in astrophysics, director of the Hayden planetarium, communicator of science and a very cool guy.
***** That's just the point - its not a big deal, at least for Tyson, even though it could be which is what makes his comments on the subject noteworthy, and exemplary.

Right on. Only the Left cares about race; no one else does in modern America. That’s why they perpetually use it as a means for societal division. Skin color is as important as shoe color, i.e., it’s not.
Refreshing seeing someone like Tyson. He makes me want to get into Astrophysics.

Alright, so the point that Tyson was making wasn't exactly original. But what's the alternative? To have Tyson quote someone else word for word every time he expresses an idea that's already been expressed?
Sometimes, you just have to say the same things differently in order to get your message across.
Besides, Tyson wasn't *JUST* repeating something that many others before him have said. He was speaking based on his own personal experiences. He just happened to have had the same kind of experiences that many people before him had (hence why he's expressing the same kind of message that many people before him expressed).
Says The Big Bear The alternative is to use your own words without struggling to be remembered for quotes. The words are meant to be "FLAIR!" not to actually convey just the thought.
There are dozens of motivational quotes, about how you respond to failures being the measure of your character, success, etc....So why go out of your way to make one in this manner ? Tyson does not speak this way, does not address people in the manner of the quote.He simply retooled a quote to be colorful, full of flair and in a different wording so it can be attributed to him. This takes time and effort and is therefore NOT a measure of his own personal path, but a structured wording meant to ripple through time :)

It's like Actors and their personal politics. I like an actor for his craft and skill, his politics are worthless to me and he/she should keep them to themselves...I enjoy Tyson for his science and oration of his science...I could care less about a motivational quote, that had been done to death, reworded, for the sole purpose of appearing wise, insightful and trying to be remembered throughout time..for the same damn quote 50 other people are remembered for :)

As a white, 62 year old, hippie-farmer-cowboy child of the 60's, this touched me, inspired me, and, in general, "spoke to me" so deeply, that it moved me to tears. This is one of many videos that I think should be required viewing/hearing, at least once every single year of a young person's education until they graduate from high school AND college. Collectively, all the videos I have in mind would each contribute to the "whole-roundedness" of the individual, to the betterment of the person, and of our world family. Teachers, administrators, policy shapers, politicians, community leaders, business/financial leaders, do you hear me?

Why couldn't my physics profs be as cool as you? Truly, my professors were so boring and non-interested in us as students that his lessons portrayed it- and they certainly did nothing to inspire any budding Bohrs, Tysons, or Darwins. They were more worried about not teaching a lesson that would upset the Bible thumpers and others that say some omnipresent being snapped his fingers and.....etc.
Anyways, thank you for all your work in this field and the love you have for what you do.

Most physics teachers are constrained by the need for rigor and accuracy. Neil is not. So much of his flashy pop science, math and history is flat out wrong.

Dr Tyson isn't only fluent in physics, mathematics, but also in how to communicate science. your profs probably never trained to communicate science in that manner, and only took the job because it was paying bills. Sad, but not entirely untrue.
@@darrenng9828 Earlier in a person's education, specifically high school, teachers have sometimes been assigned to teach subjects in which they are not formally educated. They're frustrated walking in the door, and I'm hard pressed to believe they're inclined to make science, or civics, etc. a thrilling experience for the students. I'm not judging the teacher.
I like Neil because he's crafted his reputation as not walking around this world severely pissed off about the ignorance of uneducated people asking silly uneducated questions.

I'm nodding my head in front of the computer even when I'm not asking questions.
This is a brilliant talk and I think the most important part of it starts around 45 mins about being visible in academia. You can't hide yourself or suppress your scientific abilities, otherwise you won't be seen by the scientific community. As an MSc student it helps going to conferences where every other attendee is a PhD student
By far my favorite astrophysicist. Such an interesting guy to listen to!

I've found that true masters in any discipline, (mine is Karate, 8th dan) are far more interested in what they don't know than they are in going over what they do know. I see this clearly in Dr. Tyson, though I am grateful for his teaching of basic science understanding . Thank you sir.

Tyson is always informative, entertaining and humorous, but this was Tyson at his very best.

What turned me to study scripture was science, it points to the potential of the supernatural as a clear possibility and strange as it may sound, science actually builds and reinforces my faith more than ancient scriptures, religions and dead sounding languages. For me to take the step from Atheist to Agnosticism was a huge step which in itself is a shade of faith. Many people in our society today think that Atheist and Agnostic both mean that a person does not believe in some sort of God,

I think it is very good to grow up in a countryside because the availability of a sky full of stars - something kids naturally should be exposed to. It is really profound to be close with nature. I wouldn't want to grow up in New York.
