Thank you Fr. Schmitz for another fine and relevant homily. What you say about "surrendering" vs "surrender" reminds me of how I should do the 12 Steps; you don't do the 12 Steps once, you keep on doing them. I say this, but I wish I would practice that dictum more often. Your prayer for surrender, dying to the Lord, is akin to Steps 1 to 3: I can't, God can, I'll let Him do it. (Edited) The above was written before I heard the end of Fr. Mike's homily. I want to emphasize that the Steps 1-3 of the 12 Steps are not quietism. We aren't supposed to just sit back and let God do everything. But we are supposed to accept God's will and not tell God what to do.

The etymology of surrender is something like, to give over to restore!
Thanks be to God for the ability to watch Mass when circumstances prevent us from attending in-person 🙏 I am very fortunate to be on a cruise as a graduation gift with my family. Originally, and somewhat surprisingly, the cruise line was supposed to have a priest on board to offer Mass daily. However, the priest was not able to make it, for whatever reason, so I am celebrating Mass with you all virtually. The gospel and Psalm really stood out to me today. On the ship, we have encountered bad waves due to a big storm in the western Pacific, leading many to fall quite ill with sea sickness (including myself this morning). How relevant that today's gospel and Psalm talked of sailing in stormy and rocky seas. God makes no coincidences❤

"God loves a cheerful giver." Amen, Fr. Mike! I'll pray for your fundraising efforts because I'm no good at it, either! I'm a writer/editor who worked in PR but now I'm disabled. I've had to adjust my days accordingly. I know you love the students, I appreciate you. Nurses and teachers are amazing and it's sad they get to be complainers. I have a sister who's an incredible teacher but she gets so discouraged due to the lack of respect from kids and parents. Please pray for Erin, that she soldiers on because this is the gift God gave her and she needs to use it. Just as I've used my talent for writing. God bless all the students at UMD. May your fundraising goal be met. Amen, Alleluia!

We watched you for the first time today. Usually, we watch a mass from Maine. However, it did not work, as they were having technical difficulties. Your channel was on the screen, and I opted to listen. I believe that the Lord brought me to this Mass. it was timely and spoke to my heart about what I am going through currently. Also, an excellent reminder of how we should surrender to God every single day. It reminds me of another prayer of surrender by Thomas Merton.
MY LORD GOD, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.
And I hope that I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it.

I was raised the youngest of 6 children. I am a King of Complaint. Dyed in the wool, 1st class Grumbler. I am no stranger to resentment, either. We're old friends. I get annoyed by, "God loves a cheerful giver." Easy when the giving is no hardship. I hold on with a terriers tenacity. Surrender to me, is failure. Weakness.
There's no Sanctity without the Cross.

Actually FR. MIKE, if you ever see this... I had a miracle happen ---(12/28(?)/2000, after 3 months of a walking pneumonia prior while working as an RN leaving work at around 8 PM on a Friday night)--- when I had to literally take my hands off the wheel after attempting to get my car under control as it fishtailed after someone in a black SUV almost hit me (left side) & I'd swerved hard to avoid... then my car hit the guardrail on the on-ramp (back/right side just to middle of!) as I was getting onto the next freeway... As I lifted my hands OFF THE WHEEL knowing I had NO control of the car anymore & could do NOTHING, I said my shortest prayer, "I accept", and I looked up expecting to die next (small Mazda Miata) & then hands raised, wasn't there... (literally, not there from that moment with any memory of!) My car then careened across all 4-(5?) lanes of the 405 S (from the 10) freeway from the on-ramp (not to freeway yet!) to the other side of, (front of!) into a cement wall. When I came to, my car was an accordion (smashed/totaled) with cars in fast lane whipping by behind me, & a cop was walking up the guardrail parked way up in front of me, off to the left (in the small space there of the left of the freeway). The airbag had gone off & a chemical burn was on the inside of my right arm (a literal boomerang scar burn, gone for years now) not hitting my face!!, & was burning like crazy. I hit no one & no one hit me!! My walking pneumonia was gone... ---& I'd almost been hit on La Cienga (just prior!) by a woman going into my lane just before the red light & I'd had to quickly move to the parked cars area (Luckily, there weren't any!) before the 10--- And I started to angrily (first time in ages, if ever like that??), was having it out with God!! I was tired of being able to do nothing on my days off & would go back to exhaustion in the middle of second 12 hour shift in a row... start to heal, & it just kept reoccurring. Couldn't take time off; not enough nurses... (There was so much else to the miracle/(s) related to, but I'll leave it there.)
All that to say, if you ever hear that song again, know that God 🕊✝/angels took over! And so much else to that miracle; (too private & long already!)
I had to stop & say at this point in your sermon. Hope you read this! And anyone else to know, miracles (one of several in my life...) do happen!!

I fear I must protest the use of the word "surrender" here. Or at least demand the use of "surrender to" instead of simply "surrender". As a means of common parlance "surrender" is to throw the game, or give up the fight in hopes of salvaging life. I get there is the aspect here of "surrender to God, the almighty" but I fear that might be lost by a certain carelessness that muddles instead of clarifies.
Catholicism is work salvation, please turn to Christ in faith as the Bible clearly says we are saved by grace which translates to CHARIS meaning "unmeritted favor/free gift." quite literally. There is a Reason why Paul says in Romans "for the wages of sin is death, but the FREE gift of God is eternal life through christ Jesus our lord." Again grace's literal translation in the Greek is "unmeritted favor/free gift." Salvation is completely free all you have to do is believe that what Jesus did for you 2000 years ago actually worked. He died as a substitute for sin on the cross for you and me because the penalty for sin is death, if the penalty has already been paid and "by grace you have saved through faith" then all you are doing is believing that his payment was for you, a.k.a excepting it and believing you have eternal life as a result of his finished work (and of course believing he rose from the dead as a dead savior can't save you.) The reason you cannot add a work to Christ's finished work is because as Paul makes clear in Romans 11:6 "And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work." You aren't under grace if you add something to the gospel because grace must be unmeritted for it to be attributed to you. Again, you are just trusting in what Christ already did for you, that's why in ephesians Paul says "after you believed, you were sealed with that holy spirit of promise, which is the GUARANTEE of our inherentance until the redemption of the purchased possession." Paul can't use the word guarantee here if salvation is partially based off of something you do, as obviously YOU can fail in your efforts meaning there is obviously no guarantee. But if it is entirely based off of what Christ did, then there is a guarantee.
