    I sell a lot of militaria and I catch hate from non-resellers all the time... "You should give that to the family!" when 9 times out of 10 I bought it from the family who had no interest in the piece in the first place. Then I find a collector who will honor and display the piece of history as it should be.

    Mercari lost too much money, the buyers returned too much merch. So now they go back to their old policies. Simple as that.
    All this tells me is there are so many buyers out there abusing the return policies.

    I recently helped a friend clear his family's home with an estate sale. I asked him what his goal was: to make as much money as possible or get the house cleared. He wanted everything gone so he didn't have to spend $500 renting a dumpster and spending a weekend hauling it all out. Not everyone wants to take the time and effort to sell for top dollar online. I advertised to resellers and scrappers and got the entire house cleaned out and three sheds in the backyard. The only thing left behind was one truckload of stuff to go to goodwill. He was happy, the resellers were happy and everyone benefited. One of the resellers up-charged himself because he knew he was getting a stellar deal, but it wasn't necessary because he was providing a service as well when he took an entire truckload out that we didn't have to move. I would love to see a video where you tell everyone what it's worth and then explain what they have to do to get that amount - I'll bet you 9 out of 10 would sell it to you at the cheap price to get it gone :)

    On the "Good Samaritan Garage Sale" idea - I have actually done that. I have said to people - You know, if you sold this online you could get X amount for it? The response was 100% scoff and blow-off as in "I don't have time for that stuff"; "I just want it gone"; "I don't know how to do that online nonsense" and 1 memorable elderly man who responded, "Why don't you buy it all and do that, then I can go in the house and cool off"

      You don't know what kind of money these people have, either. If you're 70 years old, and have $5 million in your brokerage account, often you just want to get rid of the stuff and downsize. If somebody wants to take everything for half price, you're quite likely to agree.

      I tell 90% of the people I buy from that I'm a reseller. They don't care. They don't want to do it. I've had people help me find stuff. They want it gone that day. That's the point of a garage sale. They don't want to hold onto it for 2, 3, 6 more months.

    Mercari ACTUALLY listens to their sellers. When I sold on eBay I found that eBay is all about the buyers and doesn’t care to listen to the sellers. I quit due to the ridiculous sidings with buyers even when they were lying. In my years selling on Mercari I have never had a problem with them not responding to an issue promptly AND fairly. Love that platform for many reasons!

I get very tired of people's attitudes about us (resellers) and it always seems like a great combo of ignorance and anger that they don't have the patience to do it themselves. Often heard the main 2 reasons why people give good prices and don’t care as long as it’s gone vs them selling online. Time and space, you can put those into any formula and it will all end up that they just want the stuff gone. Example: Had a lady say if someone sells stuff of theirs on eBay good for them! They got paid to take it out of my hands because it wasn’t worth her time or the house space to do it.

    Pickers perform an important service to collectors because first of all I've never sold anything on eBay to someone in my own town. Everything sold travels long distances to reach buyers who are thrilled to get them. Secondly I know from past experience that poorly managed thrift stores waste an enormous volume of rare antiques and jewelry because they know nothing about their potential value to collectors.

  • @rhoward295
    @rhoward295 Před měsícem +2

    I think my comments was one of the comments to which you referred, and I don’t think I clearly got my point across… the reason I thought you should teach the reluctant seller about how to look up the values was to teach him about the fact that most of the items he was so afraid of letting go were only worth $5, but that there’s also a ton of other work that goes into it, fees, and taxes. Once in a while you get a windfall, but it’s rare. Plus you’ve got a ton of knowledge. That guy would never make money selling on EBay because he’d be too afraid he’d lose out on $3 on this item and that item, that he’d never sell a thing. I know it’s my fault the way I communicated it on your last picker video… it’s too bad you don’t read minds, Kevin, because there was a nuanced and brilliant comment in there somewhere, lol! 😂

    I have something to say about this bargaining deal. First.. when I have a yard sale, 9x out of 10 I know what things are worth. I am having a YARD SALE to get rid of it. Case in point. I had dozens of comics I made a great deal to someone on. I don't care about that. I care about getting the space back. It might be insulting to assume someone just doesn't know what it's worth. I have a perfect example of my argument here. I used to have a little old lady sell me books that she knew exactly what they were worth. We negotiated what I would pay and it was always a very good price for me. People aren't babies. Most don't want storage lockers full of stuff waiting to sell it AND a lot of people I buy from are scared death of the internet sales. ..whew.. that's enough.. lol

    People who think a reseller negotiating a better price from a flea market vendor is predatory, don’t even think about how the vendor got the items, usually from a storage auction, where someone fell on hard times, couldn’t pay their bill and someone buys it all, which is also totally fine, but what is closer to predatory? The reseller negotiating with the vendor where the vendor can say yes or no, or is it the vendor who acquired the former possessions of someone who had no choice and lost the stuff due to circumstances? Really both are ok, but the reseller negotiating in good faith is clearly ok.

    I am amazed that people complain about making offers at yard sales. Do they realize in most cases the sellers pack everything up at the end of the sale and give them to goodwill, etc for FREE and get nothing for it.
    I made an offer on a big Disney lot yesterday at a yard sale and told the seller I would not be offended if they didn’t take my offer. They instantly said “Absolutely” to my offer and said “I don’t want it to go back in my house or in the trash”.

    You make some excellent points when it comes to reseller ethics. Why shouldn't we try to get the best price possible when sourcing. No one questions retailers for trying to secure the best price from manufacturers, or questions discount stores for paying pennies on the dollar for items they resell in their stores for $5-$10 or more. Or thrift stores getting their inventory free and trying to get the best price. It's sometimes ridiculous the comments to resellers. Resellers who run a legitimate business know how expensive it is to run a successful business and how much work it is. Don't ever feel guilty for trying to get the best price possible (of course with complete integrity). Best wishes! -Steven

Anyway, I always wondered for the last 15 years why Ebay has never acquired its competition before they got big they have the means, market share and capital to do it. I have said before they should have purchased Poshmark from the start added it to their portfolio and split it off like they do with ebay motors. A clothing online boutique owned by ebay would increase their market share as a whole just stupid management over there at eBay HQ.

I know because my mother recently did that and she'd be renting another one if I hadn't stopped her. She is adamant about me not selling used items if you can tell they were used so I'm only allowed to sell things that are new or very lightly used, otherwise she sees it as embarrassing. Those kind of folks are just taking out impotent rage on resellers because they can't do anything about corporations adding fees, raising prices and collecting record profits at all of our expense. A garage sale and a one on one deal is as fair and straightforward as a sale can go. Research what you're selling, no one stopping you. However, they need to be prepared for the reseller/customer to walk away. Buyer beware, after all. Resellers are making guesses and have absolutely no guarantee of any return at all when we buy an item. Fair as it comes on both sides of any such mutually agreed upon deal.

  • @OriginalNethead
    @OriginalNethead Před měsícem +2

    Yard sales are held to a)offload "stuff" and b)clear space. Anyone trying to make a profit shouldn't be holding yard sale; for-profit sales are doomed to failure unless the seller bought for pennies and is selling for quarters. Sometimes resellers get a real deal. One time I hit a yard sale and it was a divorce sale. I asked about jewelry and the lady brought out a box holding everything the Ex gave her. I offered MORE than the price she gave me by a fair whack, but she literally wanted it gone because it was all bad memories. Wouldn't take my higher price. I resold a lot of it at a fat profit so someone else could make good memories. Gave some, gold, to my sister. Another time I ended up with a guy's dad's US Navy commissioning papers etc, because he had no grandchildren and it all had to go somewhere.

    Mercari has been my platform of choice for a while now. The return policy change didn't effect me. I rarely, if ever get a return. What has impacted me and a lot of people is shifting the fees to the buyer. That seems to have limited sales and even myself as a buyer on the platform I'd been reluctant to make larger purchases because of the buyer fees. Maybe the happy median is splitting the fees between the buyer and seller. Sellers win with lower fees and reducing the buyer fee might help bring some of them back as well. I'm still making sales on Mercari but I think it would be better if they maybe spread the fees on both side. Could be a win/win.

    After going back to listing some things on Mercari, I find it difficult to sell anything more than $20 dollars even if it's priced super super competitively. Buyers don't want to pay fees on pricier items. But items that range $5 to $15 do sell well. I think that's the sweet spot price for Mercari.

    Hi I just wanted to say that people forget the purpose of garage sales people had these sales to get rid of shit they don't want anymore and are willing to take whatever for it and thrift stores lost track of their intentions if they are going to start selling things at market value then they are no longer a thrift store it use to be that they would sell shit for whatever to supposedly help low income families but then selling things for market value they are no longer helping the community their greed got the best of them

    It all comes down to time and outcome. Anyone who has had a garage sale knows the outcome is letting go, clearing space, moving etc. If you take the time and have the expertise to obtain, pay for and remove the items from the garage sale, in my opinion you are doing a service to others. That’s the exchange. What you do with or how much you make after that is your business. Literally it’s your business!

    The new buyer fee on Mercari or no seller fee is just ridiculous! I don’t sell there but recently purchased something there and if I didn’t get $5 off for first purchase on the app I would not have gotten it! If I didn’t have the coupon it would have brought it above market value. It might only be $5 but on my budget it makes a difference. Not sure I will buy there again.

    I always thought eBay's biggest problem is their senior management has no significant experience as an eBay seller. As soon as a competitive platform becomes seller friendly AND has access to a large global market, I will be done with eBay. As far as price paid, us resellers are taking the risk that the US/Global market will give us more than what we are paying for an item. I bought several boxes full of vintage bicycle parts at an estate sale. In our local market, these had no value. I paid them $150, and the seller was happy to get it. Now it's my job to clean, prep and market these parts to obtain a reasonable return. Without me, locally, they would have likely had to donate all of it. So they ended up ahead, and hopefully I will make a good return.

    Competition and Bottom Line is what most platforms listen too before anything else. It would be great if e-commerce sites like Ebay and Mercari would REALLY listen to All the reputable Seller concerns. If they did, they would really make even more money as they will have happy Sellers who feel protected and not fleeced.

    Mercari's abandoned "return for any or no reason" has been the default position here in the UK for over 20 years. The Distance Selling Regulations (2000) place a legal requirement on business sellers to accept 'change of mind' returns with a full refund including outbound shipping costs (return shipping can be at the buyer's cost if stated in advance of the sale). It took quite a while for eBay UK to enforce this but, to be honest, it's never been a big issue for my business although I recognise that clothing sellers probably suffer more than we general resellers.
    It's interesting to look at the background to the regulations; their stated purpose was to encourage e-commerce by increasing consumer confidence. This is something that, as a reseller I certainly support.

  • @joehaire
    @joehaire Před měsícem

    Have you ever bought from Mercari after they took the seller fees away? Sometimes the processing fee for buyers is more than 10% and the buyer pays the payment processing fee also, so sellers have to lower their prices to adjust for all that or the buyers will go where there is a better deal.
    I sell a lot of unopened boxes of sports cards on Mercari and my sales all but stopped after the change. Buyers are willing to pay much less than before. Items I was getting $40 for, now I get offers for $15-$20

    25:24 minutes in..talking about whether or not it is for your "kid"... We can get technical here... it IS for your "kid" - the money made to support your family! Come on now...if every single person who holds a job - or journey of the broke - had to account for every dollar they earned for their family! Maybe there would be less "embezzlement of TIME" from their employer. I worked in the corporate world for decades before working for myself. I repeatedly saw WASTED time and YET! there was no issue collecting that paycheck! So, YES! its true - its for your kid, your family, your father, etc.. because the result of the WORK and TIME invested results can mean financial freedom and stability. We are BLESSED by the opportunity to provide a SERVICE and a NEED or a WANT. And, we continually receive the praises from our buyers.

    You know this already, but you don't owe anyone a reason for why you do what you do. If they don't like it they can choose to not tune in. The problem is that you provide insight into what you do so you can monetize the views and nothing is wrong with that. So to get away from the righteous idiots out there you can choose to not produce anymore videos or let that bs roll off your back like you have in the past. As a newer reseller myself, I think your content and style is the best on CZcams.

    On the subject of trying to make deals at yard sales and purchasing for the best price, it works the same way as our pricing structure works when we resell the item. We can price it at any price point we want, but the item is only worth what someone is willing to pay. Same thing with buying at a yard sale. The item is only worth to me what I am willing to pay. Period. And no one forces the seller to take that offer, just like I am not obligated to sell an item at my buyer's offer. When you place yourself in the position of seller, one of the things you must do is conduct due diligence on your items. I am not forceful when I make an offer, I just let them know a price I am willing to pay. It is up to them to decide whether that works for them too.

I've been selling on mercari for quite some time, never any problems, good feedback, it's a pleasant platform.. I take lots of pictures write good descriptions & maybe the things that I'm selling are just not prone to crazy people or scammers... However, the real effect of all these changes are they actually help scammers and hurt honest sellers and buyers.

If I’m holding a yard sale, it’s because I want the stuff GONE and I’m not willing to sit on them while I wait for someone to buy them from one of the sites. I had a couple guys buy some bike parts from me and they acknowledged that they were resellers. They didn’t tell me their value. I knew their value. I gave them a discount because I wanted them gone. I was able to reclaim the space they were taking up, so it was a win-win.

    The critics are one-sided absolutists who know nothing about the retail business, or they're being disingenuous, because here's the deal: Nothing in this world is worth exactly the same to everyone. Values are quite fluid, thus the proverb, "One man's junk is another man's treasure." And neither is anything guaranteed to sell at resellers' projected price, which is only an estimate. That's why most accept best offers. Resellers bear quite a lot of risk on every investment, depending on current and future market trends. You can buy an apparently rare or 'popular' item and list it only to see an immediate saturation of that item in the market, or a decline in interested buyers, thus a jump in competition and/or reduction of the value due to supply vs. demand.
