  • Cherie Kurarangi says she was born into gang life. Her family were in the Mongrel Mob and she grew up in it.
It wasn’t easy. In fact she says she has both witnessed and experienced inter-generational trauma.
Now she's opening up her whare to support other māmā and tamariki struggling with the same challenges she faced.
She spoke to Te Rito journalism cadet, Mihingarangi Satele

I remember this women. Sadly she lost her son to Tangaroa along the shoreline at Marine Parade Beach in Napier some years ago. Very sad.. Then I remember her for her
"NARK" movement when she was in the Ngaruwahia. Which was very bold and contraversial. I believe she was encouraging people not to be intimidated into silence by criminals but Instead speak up and tell the police. And now in 2022 we see her latest kaupapa. She's now opening her home to mongrel mob whanau and those in need and sharing her thoughts on the current situation.Even issuing a challenge to the powers that be to work with the gangs. Is she right or wrong??? Well you decide. As for me I believe we might not have seen the last of this wahine.

I'm a Pakeha woman, I had violence and alcohol around me and at me in childhood. Then white bike gang relatives who started trying when I was 11years old and got me in the end. I'm 55 now now and I have to say that as far as I'm concerned Maori women are the heart and backbone of this country, my entire life I have seen Maori women stand up against the harshest of circumstance with love, strength, wisdom and dignity and use this Mana to pick up others in need. Amazing women. I hope Cherie Kurarangi reads this comment one day and if she does I want to say how much I admire her strength and honesty and the love and care she offers. She is what we all should be. I also want to say on another track that wherever I have seen or experienced a cycle of abuse, definitely intergenerational abuse- it starts with the abuse from the State. PTSD from war, passed on to kids, who go to prison, who's kids become State Wards and so on it goes. The Government and its departments sure do need to look into gang culture and see where their abuse of power has created gang life. Then for gods sake stop perpetuating this bullsh*t approach of punishing and damaging people who have already received so much trauma.

You are so very right in your korero about intergenerational abuse as these hurts are passed down from grandparent to parent to child. We have seen this ourselves So have taken the challenge to work with our whanau and reconnect them bringing them away from addictions and harmful behaviours.
We feel that supervised visitations needs an overhaul as more and more mummy’s are being alienated from their kids via 1 hour visits. It is impossible for a mother to maintain a meaningfully engaged relationship in 1 hour a week
