  • Lots of people love to keep chickens, and many of them prefer the bantams. But there is more to consider when keeping bantams besides the smaller size. Smaller size birds sometimes means bigger concerns. Steve & Brian have a list of things that you have to consider when keeping bantams.

I've got a flock of Old English Game Banties. Wonderful little people but yes they can fly like hawks lol. This causes them to have trimmed wings. They are friendly then the standard breeds I have. I've gone in and kneeled down to pick something up only to find my one little black hen sitting on my shoulder peeking around at my face as if to say hello lol. And I've found them to be good layers and excellent mothers. They go broody in the middle of winter 🙄. I've had banty hens hatch and raise a few chicks from standard breeds now.

I had a flock of mixed variety bantams. One gal went broody and I let her hatch her clutch. I was surprised when several of the offspring got to be larger. Now I think I understand.
Lots to love about banties 😁

My Cochin bantam “Squeek” is an amazing little girl. She definitely holds her own amongst the bigger girls and is an egg laying machine. She is also an amazing forager and it is truly amusing watching her chase down bugs and run around with her prize like she is queen of the yard. 😁🐔

@@HobbyFarmGuys I love all my girls but Squeek really is one of a kind. She is a very special little hen. And my first bantam too.

yes, body size and cold are key, but people tend to forget single and even the point on a rose comb can freeze off! pea combs or heated roosts really help the wee chickens in zone 6 and colder!

My wild chickens are bantams, they sleep in the trees, they don't like the coop, my reds sleep in the coop

I recently accidentally acquired some bantam chicks. They almost look like chipmunks. One has black and white spots on its wing feathers and the other is kinda more of a dark with lighter brown spots on its wings. Can't wait to see what they grow into! Have no idea on breed.

Because of limited space, I have 4 bantam Barnevelders.

That’s great! Bantams make it possible to have a small flock in a small space!

I've always wanted bananas to use their eggs for pickled eggs.
But unfortunately, I have a full coop right now. Maybe 1 day I'll have room for some.

    Bantams do look cute.
The placement of the microphones makes it hard to read your shirts, one of the highlights of the show😅
    Thanks for the info.

Where are the best places to find more Bantams?

Check with the online hatcheries as well as your local farm & feed stores. Facebook groups are also a great place to find birds locally.

Great question…tough to answer. Different breeds and individuals will display signs at different ages. Here is a video on the subject:

Everytime I get bantams they always end up dead. I think they are not hardy chickens.

Depends on the breed & where they are kept, but they can be tougher to keep than standard breeds.
