- Due to an issue on the job site, we will be delayed for ~3 weeks. Hopefully this will allow time to get some work done on the layout.
This video is a brief overview of some issues with ScaleTrains products, and it also appears we have to call out a track gang to fix a couple of trackwork issues. We conclude with an few ideas for things to work on before it is time to go back to the job site.
We should also do another tour via the "train cam" as there has been a decent amount of new scenery added. Might be fun to take a spin around the layout and see how it all looks.

Great video like always
Nice to hear you've got a bit of time off the job site - whatever the problem is - so you can get back to your "real" job of keeping us entertained! ;-)
LOL, thanks Dave! I do miss working on the layout. For the next couple of weeks I won't mind if it rains and is humid- makes it easy to stay inside and work on the layout.
Rob. Enjoyed the update on the layout and yes the summer has been a scorcher too. Glad that you get to spend a couple of weeks home with the Family. I love the J that you have. If it doesn't bother you, I would just take and snip the sanding lines back on the SD 40-2 since they don't really do anything. I would also send a not to Scale Trains and tell them about the Grabs on you airslide. I would think that they would just send ya some Grabs so you can replace them. I hear Shane is pretty good about that stuff at scale trains. :) There is also a Guy at Shapeways that makes H.O. scale Switchlamp Lantern Heads like you want to put on the front of your Scratch built Restaurant in Lake City. Heck I wouldn't mind to paint you some H.O. scale People for the Layout either.
Looking forward to see what you accomplish while you are home. I've been avoiding the heat in the basement as well. Scott
Thanks Scott- your layout is progressing nicely, good work! I always enjoy your updates.
Good to find you back in the modelling world for a while at least Rob. I would respectfully suggest that the issues with the ScaleTrains loco's are probably more of an issue for those who either care more about such things or are operating on a more restricted budget than you may be. I get your drift, but I think ScaleTrains will most likely appreciate helpful feedback because they're presumably trying to produce an above average product. Admittedly they have to some extent, but silly little things can spoil one's experience and actually there are apparently some purchasers of their products who have had more serious problems than just the sand lines being defective. Personally, as someone who would like to see ScaleTrains succeed, if I had paid that much money for a loco', I'd at least let them know of my concerns so that they had the opportunity to take some action. Unfortunately here in the UK at the moment we're hammered when we buy from the US and even if we buy from a British dealer we pay through the nose, so it'll probably be a while before I get to enjoy the ScaleTrains experience. All that said, I respect your views and your skills. I shall be looking out for future posts...........David(UK)
Hi Rob, i have one of those scale trains sd40-2 and all I have done is trim the sand lines a little. It made a big difference and you are right, you don't notice them that much anyway.
I was thinking that as well Terry. May try that and see how it goes.
Thanks for the update Rob. Scale Trains told me that only a very few units are affected by the sand line issue. Turns out that the "very few" units are owned by everyone I know that has bought one. Anyway, they said to contact them and they would be glad to help you resolve the issue. Me? Like you, I would just cut them off. Who else is gonna' nail an Admiral Cab like Scale Trains did? Glad to see you get some time at home with family. Cheers, Dan
LOL, I hear you. I suppose I could contact them, but it isn't a major issue for me. And you are right- ScaleTrains did a great job on these SD40-2's!
Always enjoy the updates.. Thanks for sharing.. Ed.
My pleasure Ed, and thanks for watching!
Nice to hear from you.thanks.
You are welcome! And thank you for watching.
Glad you are back!!! Been waiting for an update
Thanks Warren.
Hi Rob, nice to see another update. I'm based in the UK and currently building a layout (English modern) but I want to have one US loco and either wagons or coaches. I'm not clued up on any US loco's but want something with the appearance of N&S 3224 with the walkways down the sides. Can you recommend a loco (or loco's) and wagons/coaches to showcase a US train.
I think the clicks add to the realism... I've heard a fair amount of clicks come from older EMD's when they're idling or going slow
Very true- as well as other odd sounds on the few I have had a chance to see in person.
such a beautiful layout my boy. really great scenery and track work. love your back drops how did you guys get all that backdrop so continuous it wonderful. it really works looks so real. love it i guess that to me is the most impressive thing. to get a back drop to work in unison with your layout so nicely. you just dont see that much at all. keep going and i will look forward to more updates. thank you for sharing.
I just saw this on another layout. Where a gap was need in the track he put a little piece of styrene in to keep the insulation gap but keep trains from derailing. Maybe the same could be done where the J1 details and just put a piece of styrene in and paint it to make it a lot less noticeable?
What i have done with corners that do that is to move the gaps so that they are not right across from each other. Off set them by an inch or so.
Good idea Jeff- will implement if I decide to redo any of this track.
I don’t care what sounds or details are missing from my models. I want to run trains. So as long as it works good and pulls my trains around my layout. And switches over my turnouts. I’m happy. I don’t like to spend a lot of time with them in the shop. There not making there model money if there not going to my model customers.
Welcome back Rob, I agree with you on the sand line's , they don't bother me because i have the sound unit's. I can understand the non sound unit's on hearing the "clicking sound". As for the location , yes they should be by the wheel ,when i run mine i'm looking at the engine not the sand line's, besides they don't actually deploy sand, if they did i definitely could not afford one.Scale Trains made this awesome locomotive with a lot of detail and affordable, like you said some of the flaws can be overlooked. ( spoon in the track, next video, fork in the road? )
Agree Mike- I can easily get over this as I really appreciate all ScaleTrains (and other MFG's) do to provide us with these models. It takes a lot of dedication and effort. Now if they DID deploy sand, I think it would just make a mess and we would all have to run a vacuum cleaner car at the end of our trains!
Rob; Don't know if this will help but I had a similar issue with long rigid frame locomotives. In my case I re-checked the track for smooth transitions into the curves etc and none the less I had some "climb out" issues such as you described. In one case I found that the wheelbase of the loco was not perfectly level. I determined this by placing the loco on a sheet of glass and found that the lead driver did not sit level on the glass. Turns out the frame was not completely level so I worked on a bushing to true up the axles and the problem resolved itself. The next area of issues I discovered was that when spiking my rail down I had tended to push a bit to hard and distorted the rail downwards . I made up a new track gauge with a small level across the two rails and found a bit of track out one level across the rails which gave the drivers enough space to lift out. Once I levelled the track side to side the problems were also removed.
Just a thought!
Cheers;
Mike
Thanks Mike- great ideas. I didn't think to actually check the J itself. I would be nervous to take it apart, but certainly will check as you mentioned to see if it is all level. To the back shop she goes!
Hi Rob I've been binge watching your MRUV series for the last week or so and I love what you've done. Its been a fascinating series and I look forward to many more of your episodes on the railway.
I lapsed from the model scene about twenty years ago due to life, work getting in the way but now find myself in a position where I can start building again and actually your videos have been an interesting window into how far the hobby has progressed, especially in the electronics in the last twenty years or so.
I'm lucky in as much as i now have a fairly large area to build my dream layout in, something similar in size and space to your layout and I was wondering if you could give me a pointer as to how much money you've spent on the construction of your layout. I imagine that it isn't going to be cheap, especially as you seem to have a love of scenic effects and I know they aren't cheap but then if its worth doing then its worth doing right!
Hope it's not to pertinent a question and maybe you don't want to think about the costs too much...I guess it could be a little frightening. lol
Anyway keep up the good work...
I have an admiral cab and had the clicking sound. I don't worry about it.
Steve you can't please everyone , they scream for details but if the manufacturer where to add those details the price would go up and they would bitch about that .
So true- I think we are lucky to have MFG's that strive to provide accurate, detailed models that don't cost TOO much- but as they increase the detail level the price will increase as well. I think we have a good balance now, on most models, between cost and detail level/operating smoothness.
To be honest I really could careless about Sanding lines, I find them more of unneeded detail and could careless if they are there or not, so I'll just trim or cut mine off as its just not that important of a detail!
You didn't get nothing done man you said around an air condition in the dark didn't get nothing done man must be life
