well, id say that quality contributed to weight of upper floors...they shouldev done stronger ground floor to cary that weight
@@perazzderap It's actually the ground that bears all the weight, and a "stronger ground floor" would have made little difference if the ground under the building lost its cohesion during the earthquake. That can happen.

That's right. Many buildings that are _not_ built to withstand earthquakes crumble into heaps of rubble when an earthquake comes. I think we've seen that in Haiti.

These older buildings may have been grandfathered in.
Let's take a moment to appreciate just how well the Taiwanese construct their buildings!! Anywhere else and the death toll would have been in the thousands.

Yes, and you can find that last building at the south end of Xuanyuan Road in Hualien. Look for it on Google StreetView - only there, you'll see it standing upright.

My heart is breaking. I used to live in Hualien, Taiwan. Praying for them.
This is so crazy just a magnitude or 2 stronger and this is a mass casualty event, everyone in this area should remain on guard for a few days.
A magnitude 7 earthquake is more powerful than 30+ magnitude 6 at the same time🫠
Taiwan is an earthquake prone country, there are plenty of earthquakes every year in Taiwan. Taiwan is much more prepared than other countries when it comes to earthquakes This one although was a major earthquake.

It's really sad how being in an earthquake prone region most buildings aren't built to withstand earthquake, but if you look at 101 one of the tallest building in the world, it is not even affected at all.

Such earthquakes rarely occur even in Japan. In fact, in many countries, there are fewer buildings designed to withstand high earthquake intensity, and the damage is often more severe than in Japan. We pray for the safety and well-being of the people of Taiwan and send our deepest condolences to those who have lost their lives.

This is normal here. Also it's only Hualian and old city with buildings that were built before the strict codes.

It can be sad. In 2009 I visited New Zealand, and I saw a nice church there - a big Gothic Revival building in Christchurch. You can probably guess the rest: I can't do that any more, because two major earthquakes have since struck the area, and they rubbished Christchurch Cathedral. The tower came crashing down into the square. I had actually walked over that spot on my visit. Other buildings that I remember are gone now, too, thanks to those earthquakes, even the one where I stayed.

Actually, they don't seem to have done too rotten a job, there, User. It _was_ a powerful earthquake, but they don't have cockeyed buildings on every block; there are only a few. No building designed with earthquakes in mind can be perfect, just as no oceanliner designed with icebergs in mind can be. I think we all know _that_ story.
