  • In 2021 I built my first settlement at Tenpines Bluff and it was a nice build, but I wanted to try again and incorporate some ideas I had not been able to use the first time so once again welcome to Tenpines Bluff!
This build was done on Playstation 5 using the "Game of the Year" edition. No building mods were used. The only mods I have are Creation Club skins which you will see on armor, clothing and the dog in the settlement.

Benson, love your work. Love that credit other builders and love your lighting patterns, the colors and dimness/brightness very excellent work.
Two questions. On average how long do you spend on each build? Have you thought about building in survival mode?

Thank you for watching and the kind comments! Every build differs but I would say this one (from start to finishing decorating) probably took about 3 weeks (working on and off). As for Survival, I may play in it one day but in terms of building I like to have as much freedom as possible (within the No Mods) limit so I've stuck to my current "Hard" difficulty. Maybe one day?

Personally I'm not good at decorating my settlements and making them look nice, but I'm good at functional settlements. This place is just nice, I can't think of a better word for it. The only thing that might make it look better in my opinion is to have some mods that add greenery to the environment, I like green plants and more trees in my game. Different strokes for different folks.

Just yesterday I was looking to see if you had any new builds and here you are today. I hope you're not spying on me like a synth....... How many fingers am I holding up?
1:40 Now I kinda want to build a shop that only sells settlement recruitment beacons and man it with one of my least favorite companions. Deacons's Beacons.
2:59 Patients stick around in the waiting room until a doctor is available to see them.
3:35 I like the shape and angles of this room.
4:09 Gotta know, did this doorway snap through the floor? If so did it go in right away or did you have to mess with the height of the floor?
5:42 Doesn't General Atomics Galleria have weights in it? It doesn't matter much when we play but from a lore standpoint they are a lot closer for the settlers to scavenge.
6:05 I love using the cages for things because of their unique colors and textures.
9:49 Cricket getting high again? No way!
10:02 Nice use of the globe at Shopper's World.
16:24 Nice of you to point that out. I feel like a lot of builders still don't know that tip. Ghost crops are a pain in the A.

Nice work once again Benson! I'm always i pressed with your junk decoration. Looking forward to whatever is next from you.

Ha ha, it's been a while. Holidays took time away from building. I'm actually most of the way through another build now that I'm eager to post. Should go up in February.
      1:40: Deacon's Beacons is perfect. :D
3:35: I was definitely trying to go for angles here so it wouldn't just be a big rectangle. That triangular piece from the Concrete section is a real time saver!
4:09: If I recall correctly this was a campfire/pillar glitch situation (but it's been a while).
5:42: It does BUT IIRC they do not respawn as the ones in the Boxing Gym do (at least not for me).
6:05: I actually got the idea from you! :) It definitely adds an interesting visual touch.
16:24: I learned it myself from Sar. May as well pass on the knowledge. :)
26:39: You mean the "O" on the dish? Yeah, I didn't want to wire the dish up but I wanted some kind of light on it. :)
      27:36: Right?! The nerve!
As for the signpost/plumping I almost thought of using conduits instead and then remembered that piece and thought it would be perfect. Great that you picked up on it. I should have called it out in this video.
Thanks for watching! This isn't my most impressive work but I had fun doing it. :)

I also play on a PS system and have heard that if you re set the size bar more than one or two times you risk crashing the game or having issues. So I am interested in your experience with this using Playstation and how often you do a reset and if you have experienced issues with that. .

How do you get all of the items to stay put on a shelf without a settler knocking them off 😭😭 (as you said you don’t use mods?)

    • @BWTF_Ben
      @BWTF_Ben  Před rokem +1

I have found for the most part settlers are pretty good about not knocking things down off shelves and tables. However, as the game progresses and I go back and forth to different settlements, objects DO start falling through the floors etc. so they get "lost". When I am done building a settlement, I generally run around decorating and then do screencaps and video ASAP because I know if I wait too long and travel around then come back, many items won't be where I last saw them.
This is one situation where Mods offer a distinct advantage. My understanding is there are Mods which allow you to "build" any object you have in your inventory but they stay static because they're treated like say, a table or a chair so the game loads them differently. Many of Oxhorn's earlier videos show these off and they are one of the reasons that I sometimes find mods tempting. :)

    • @BWTF_Ben
      @BWTF_Ben  Před 2 měsíci

The tall scaffolding pieces are aligned with the heights of the Barn and Warehouse pieces. Using a combination of those scaffolding pieces with the half pieces you can pillar glitch wall pieces in to create various structures. In the case of the guard tower, I believe the first level is two scaffolding pieces on top of one another and then a prefab on top (but it's been a while). :)

It took me a couple years to get to this point. I wound up watching and learning from a lot of different CZcams videos. Here's my suggestion list:
The Skooled Zone No Mods Shop Class: czcams.com/users/SkooledZone
A good place to start learning some of the fundamentals of building and seeing what you can do in the game without mods (it's more than you think).
      NastyBonz: czcams.com/channels/jkTLs5-MeuDpLocDZssFYA.html
Offers some basic tutorials, but also discusses advanced techniques. Unlike some builders, NastyBonz builds BIG so it gives you an alternative perspective on building.
      norespawns: czcams.com/users/norespawns1
A good channel to see what is possible beyond simply snapping everything together. norespawns was my first introduction to using different shapes and textures together to create interesting structures. When you are starting out with building his early videos will be very valuable.
      The Insane Shecklador: czcams.com/channels/zscIrP5knxQGyXTaZttjRg.html
Does not have a lot of videos but the ones that are there are very valuable, especially with the use of the "camp fire glitch" which has become a staple feature for me building since I do not use mods.
      SarDeliac: czcams.com/users/SarDeliac
Has recordings of building live streams where you can see a variety of techniques used to build in the "scrappy style" without mods. He also has other series where he tailors builds to stories, something that I find also helps when building. He also has a basic methods and techniques series that is worth watching.
      Wasteland Dovahkiin: czcams.com/channels/uxozb9S1JxmOfkAQbgeHtA.html
While the focus of her channel has changed, her archive has a lot of fun build videos that show off builds as well as finished settlements that inspired me many times over the last year.
      Lois Clayton: czcams.com/channels/Rjj0LJsB8o3JMUPIwawAMQ.html
Fun settlement tours that show some fun use of mixed materials and some cool conceptual ideas for stories behind a settlement.
      Oxhorn: czcams.com/users/ClassyManIAm
Has a ton of videos about Fallout lore. This will help you understand the game's story more and sometimes helps with game play. He also has settlement tours and building information such as a handy video about how settlement happiness works and another about settlement attacks.

Since Benson threw my name in the mix I'll add a few tips. Most of this will apply to "scrappy" style builds but some of it applies to all builds.
First, if you haven't got a good hold on the basic glitches "rug glitch," "pillar glitch" (AKA group select), wire glitch, and settlement size glitch it would be wise to become very competent with all of them. Campfire glitch is another very useful tool but lots of great settlements were built before it was discovered.
SarDeliac has a ton of build footage and a lot of good advice. One big thing I picked up from him was to build a tall set of stairs and look at the entire settlement area from above before building. This can give you a better understanding of what you are working with as far as layouts and where traffic patterns would naturally develop. Also look for interesting terrain or objects you can build on or around. Lots of people want to build on flat unobstructed ground but building on hills or in and around trees or barnacling off a preexisting structure is usually more appealing visually.
Sometimes it's good to have a fairly solid plan in place before you start building but know that it will most likely change as you go. Other times it is best to just let it develop naturally and think like a settler. Loco4pack has a playlist of several people who participated in his "Evolution of a Settlement" challenge that emphasizes this point. If a real life settler found a new place they will not build an entire settlement in one go. They would likely start with a small shack for sleeping and then head out to scavenge and trade and hunt food and what not. Once they returned they might start working on building a farm area or a water purifier or something else they need. Then more wandering and scavenging. Eventually a new settler would show up and they might tear down a wall and expand on the sleeping shack or perhaps build a new sleeping shack entirely. Maybe that first shack now gets turned into a shop. Then more exploring and returning to build a guard post, and exploring and building, exploring and building etc..... If you just build one thing at a time in your game and then go run around for a bit before building again it can help make it feel much more natural.
I mentioned tearing down a wall but often we will tear down entire buildings or entire builds if we are not happy with how it's going. I tear down more than I build and I spend more time walking circles and looking at my builds critiquing them then I actually spend building.
Sar also liked to study the in game shacks and camps and then try to replicate them in his own settlements. He really showed this off in his Spectacle Island build where he recreated Kessler's house from Bunker Hill and the shack between Abernathy Farm and Wicked Shipping along with a few others. I also have a build of one of the Easy City Downs shacks on my channel. After learning how to recreate existing shacks you will naturally start to have more ideas.
Perhaps recreate an existing shack and then tear down a wall or two and add on to the building to make it less square or boxy. That is a tip that needs mentioning as well.... Try to stay away from square and boxy. Mix things up and incorporate angles and different levels. Sar talked about laying out floor pieces in the same shape as Tetris pieces and then trying to turn them into buildings. That keeps them from being too square.
Mixing materials is a good thing. A hut made entirely out of warehouse walls will most likely not look as good as one that has a mix of warehouse, wood, and metal. Using the barn or warehouse walls with the rotten holes in them and then patching them up with railings or junk fences or other material wall pieces can really help with the scrappiness too. I also tend to shy away from snapping pieces together. A wall that is slightly crooked or a floor piece an inch or two lower than the piece next to it looks more natural. You will often see these slight gaps or irregularities in the raider huts the Bethesda devs created.
One thing that probably helped me more than any other tip is to watch other builders. Look at what they built, or how they built it, and "steal" it for yourself. SarDeliac always encouraged people to steal his ideas, improve on them, and then let him "steal" those ideas back.
Since this is getting very long I'll leave one last tip. Don't be afraid to ask people how they built something, or to help look over part of your own build that you are struggling on, or just any help in general. Most of us builders enjoy helping others improve so we can eventually "steal" something back from them. I read every comment on my channel (unless YT fails to notify me) and I am happy to help where I can.

It seem like you would shy away from interacting with the vendors, I understand the reason for that but It would be a little bit more immersive if you would just buy a bottle of nuka and enjoy it on the tour. Just some personal idea

When you get to the part of the main quest where you have to build the teleporter to get into the Institute, there are certain build objects you can create *until* you actually teleport into the Institute. After that they are no longer available. That greenish computer console is one of those pieces. When I got to that point in my play through, I ran around to different settlements and just built those pieces and let them sit there til I was ready to build my settlements. :)
