I think it's more Chinese is his second language and he took the term 脏话 (zang hua) more at face value rather than contextually. In Chinese, 脏话 literally means "dirty speech" and the term is often used to refer *very* obscene "curse words" as we would understand them in English, but it's also can be used to refer to rude/offensive language in general. I don't think it has much to do with his sensibility as a Japanese person, though.

I’ve actually seen a video which randomly interviewed strangers on the street in Japan asking them what is the meanest thing one can say in Japanese and many of them answered “go to die”. Because Japanese don’t swear by saying fuck you.

I’ve studied Japanese for a few years and I’m guessing YU meant the words “shi ma tta” and “shi ne e” which are one of the very few cuss words in Japanese language.. he was very surprised to know that telling someone to go die is a very weak way to be mean in mandarin 😂 he’s such a cutie

It's cause in Japanese they don't have a whole lot of curse words and they rarely use words that are considered bad or rude. I'm not sure what exactly is it but Japanese seem to have some kind of fear surrounding the word "death" which is why telling someone to die sounds very very bad to Yu.
This fear goes to the point that in Japan some buildings are completely missing the 4th floor, as number four, "shi" in Japanese, also means death. Even if there's more than 4 floors, the numbers in elevator might go 1, 2, 3, 5, 6... And telling someone "go die" is like the worst thing you can say to someone.

That 'fear' exists in all historically sinicized countries. The Japanese word for four actually comes from Chinese and the same practice of omitting the 4th floor exists here in China, too. I'm pretty sure this tripped him up because Chinese is his second language and he didn't grow up in Taiwan. The term that this video translates as 'curse words' just means 'dirty speech'. In Mandarin, 'dirty speech' *can* be like proper curse words, but it can also just be obscene or insulting speech in general.

Well, i ever read that suicide in Japan is high. If i don't wrong everyday there will br people go suicide. So to tell people to die is really bad. In my place actually that kind of think even become joke ecem close friends. But, i personally think tell people to death is really bad. Life is not a joke.
And i watched in some video where Sam joke about death and and RayTian joke together even said looking for people to bury him. Yu didn't laugh with them like usual, he even didn't smile. He looked uncomfortable about that. It seems that really really bad for him. Well i side with you joke about death is really bad. Sometimes what you said can happen so watch the word you said even when joking
