Hey would love to connect with anyone else on this new front. I recently started my own and jumping through the hoops
Same here.. I’m open to connect on LI my name is Edgar Paz on there (Anaheim,CA). Open to anyone else who just started out as well.
Hello, I’m from Chicago and happy to chat with you guys.
Same! I’m a CPA and get so many different perspectives on what to do and how to do it “Don’t do bookkeeping, start off doing bookkeeping, PM Software, CRM Software, Pricing Structure, Tax Software, website” I just want to go cry in a corner 😢. Anyways I’m on LinkedIn “Washington Financial Solutions” I need a mentor 😫
I interviewed 60 people who started their own (BV) firms. When the subject came up, their only retreat was that they did not do it sooner.
5 really resonates with me. I've been studying for the CPA and plan on opening a small tax practice. I have the work experience, I just gotta pass the tests. I figured if I can pass soon, I'll do EA instead.
Started mine last year and learning every day! These videos help tremendously especially on maintaining a positive mindset. I always appreciate the humor too.
Nice! Thanks for being here Chris
Thank you Jason for another great video to share with my peers!
100% agree. Especially the point of “just do it”. I started my bookkeeping business after working for a firm and decided one day that I would go out on my own.
I have developed friendships & network with a group of other bookkeepers that are in different stages of their own bookkeeping business. We collaborate, share best practices, and help each other through obstacles.
By far the best decision I ever made and it has been great building new professional & personal relationships with others going through a similar journey as I am.
I also meet with bookkeeping and accounting students from our local college to do tutoring and career path advising based on their skills. It not only helps them, but reminds me of where I was at one point, how far I have come, and that all the hard work was worth it.
I love this Jason! Thank you for some clarity on credentials. I am not a CPA (not that big a nerd...lol), but instead became an EA and focused more on expanding my knowledge on advisory and tax representation. I am happy to leave the AA work to others.
#7 is extremely accurate! (No takeaway from other points) I’ve taken my startup accounting firm to another level by always learning everything I can, asking other experts, and collaborating with a more established accounting firm. You’re dropping gems 💎 ✨
Anyone watching this in Columbus OH? Coffee on me - would love to meet some like minded folks. Really enjoying the specificity of Jason's videos.
I don’t know how to DM you. I’m a financial advisor with an office in Columbus. We want to add accounting services. We have 10k clients. Easy way to build a business. We should definitely chat.
Thanks for posting this video Jason. This really spoke to me this afternoon when I watched it. I obtained my CPA in Dec of 2023 and I am in the process of launching Roch Accounting Services, LLC down here in the Houston, TX area. I am not planning on leaving my current job (great benefits, pay, boss, and pension), but I am planning on making the accounting firm my side business. Everyone that I have been talking to has been encouraging me in the journey, which helps out a ton. Would love to connect with anyone down here in Houston, TX.
You got this!
Best video ever! I am open to connect if anyone is wanting to share ideas. I started my firm about a year ago and I am mainly interested in talking to like-minded people to future proof firms with ideas on how to survive the AI surge and how to utilize AI rather than get consumed by it. (Please, no solicitors... just interested in talking and sharing each other's ideas)
Great video, thanks for sharing! You pretty much made me quit my nowhere job and open up a firm and life has been different and in a great interesting way... Not saying it is less stress but perhaps more interested and free
Namaste From India. Thanks for coming up with such an insight full videos.
Jason thanks for all your content for us
Watching from Canada, thanks for this video. I have been thinking of starting but always pushed to later years. Thanks Jason!
Ah nice! You've got this! Find some other like-minded folks and it'll make the prospect much less spooky
He thinks we won't notice this was all generated in Sora. Here's the prompt for anyone curious:
"portrait of a man with a confident and approachable expression. He has sharp, engaging eyes that convey intelligence and curiosity, with a hint of a smile playing on his lips that suggests friendliness. His hair is neatly styled, with a modern, casual flair. His overall demeanor is that of someone who is not a CPA because it is genuine and relatable, exuding a casual Michigan charm(!?) The setting is bright and clear, with soft lighting; APS-C;Pancake Lens; future Joe Rogan guest"
Hola from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 ✨️ we do US taxes too Rivero Consulting
#12 & #15 👏🏼
If you business regestred in Florida for instance, can you without cpa licence file tax return for someone in Texas, how all big tax franchises operating, doing multi states without cpa?
Hi Jason
Very inspiring video
I am thinking about starting an accounting company in Miami or Nevada ! I worked for 7 years for two
Big 4 firms
I would be happy to discuss
Great video! How do you do #14 when trying to keep a low profile whilst doing your current FT role?
Yeah this is a situation where using the branding of the firm rather than your identity for a bit may make sense
Spotlight effect will make this seem like a bigger deal than it really is, in all likelihood nobody's going to see it, but particularly so if you're just using the name of your brand
@@jasoncpa Thanks for the reply bud. However, I'm an FD for a company and left practise a long time ago now so can't really do that. The services I offer are more geared towards assisting companies with raising finance and getting through transactions (so more like Corporate Finance) rather than traditional management accounts etc. I agree with you re the spotlight effect but need to be careful on how much I can really publicise the moonlighting I'm currently doing...
Hello! I was wondering if you have any advice on how to do a part-time accounting service (non-tax, non-bookkeeping) as a CPA? I work in private accounting (senior accountant), but eventually want to go part-time and hopefully use my knowledge base of accounting.
Find some others who have done the same and just start that side hustle! On the podcast recently we've been talking about ways to build a specialized practice from scratch, here's the most recent example czcams.com/video/coziLzIkgMM/video.htmlsi=gq25T75jHkguNyD0
What were your resources for "learning everything you could about running accounting firms", referenced in pt. 7? Experience?
It started with social media, then pods, conferences & online communities. Basically stealing ideas from anyone who was willing to share the nitty gritty with me
This is your best video hands down
Thanks stickman
@@jasoncpa I've been wanting to start a firm and now I'm in the process, worst case it doesn't work out 💪
Good video. Which states you cannot call yourself an accountant without cpa..? Tnx
I'm unsure off the top of my head but from a quick ChatGPT convo that crawled the state society websites (do verify):
California: Firms must have a majority of ownership by CPAs to use the term "accounting firm".
New York: Only firms with CPAs can advertise or use the title "accounting firm".
Texas: A firm must have at least one CPA owner to use the term "accounting firm".
Florida: Firms must have a CPA to use the designation "certified public accountant" or "public accounting firm".
Illinois: A firm must be registered with the Illinois Board of Examiners and have a CPA to use the term "accounting firm".
Pennsylvania: Firms need to have a CPA to be recognized as an "accounting firm".
Washington: Only firms with CPAs can use the title "accounting firm".
So, if you want to offer bookkeeping services and file personal and business taxes in those states, how can you call yourself and your company? Many thanks
Yup. I agree that CPA is nothing as a marketing tool. I didn't get practice management software until I reached 50K in gross revenue. There was no need for it and I was cash poor
OMG, your segment with Hugo was awesome! That earned you a subscribe, my friend! Excellent job! And good content, too!
I have a business consulting firm and I am a Canadian CA.CPA. My issues is attracting clients. Any suggestions
Usually the solution here is to get more specific, which paradoxically makes it easier to find people, and find the network hubs for those folks, influencers, consultants etc

Any one know if its possible to get higher caliber clients without a CPA credential? I notice it’s well respected.
Absent any other differentiator a CPA may make you look smart, the trouble is you're still going to be up against every other CPA
Generally if a prospect is making buying decisions based on your credential, they don't yet trust your expertise
The podcast that went out today is on this subject! There is a better way czcams.com/video/kMRn73VOEnk/video.html
Anyone in Plano TX ?
It is highly beneficial to share this kind of info because - 'give a man fish, fed for a day; teach how to fish, BAM lifestyle business' (sort of....)
I have an elec. engr./physics background and have in the past tried to teach something that is not commonplace (artificial gravity device construction) and it's much harder to teach a novelty subject. We began with the Cavendish gravity experiment from the year 1798 (which demonstrated all collections of atoms create a natural gravity field), and using electromagnetic techniques, developed a way to un-balance the natural gravity field of our test devices. We basically gave up trying to share the info due to resistance (General Relativity is a huge issue).
So I just want to say, it's a gift to be able to teach something that adds a lot of value to almost anyone with accounting knowledge.
Giving back to a knowledge-domain-specific community is not necessarily welcomed, but in this case, you probably won't be able to count the number of people who have benefited from your content. Thank you!
Thank you Greg!
