    STORYLINE:
Scuffles between Israeli police and protesters erupted in Tel Aviv on Saturday after thousands of people blocked a highway to demonstrate against the government.
The protesters gathered on a busy road, lit fires and flares as police tried to control the demonstration with water cannons and officers on horseback attempted to clear the streets.
The country has grown increasingly divided as the war in Gaza has dragged on and cease-fire efforts have faltered, with tens of thousands of people joining months of anti-government protests across the country.
On Saturday, Hamas and Egyptian officials said Hamas had given its initial approval of a U.S.-backed proposal for a phased cease-fire deal in Gaza, dropping a key demand that Israel commit up front to a complete end to the war.
The apparent compromise by the militant group, which controlled Gaza before triggering the war with an October 7 attack on Israel, could deliver the first pause in fighting since November and set the stage for further talks on ending a devastating nine months of fighting.
But all sides cautioned that a deal is still not guaranteed.
