  • When buying a new car in 2020 it’s fair to say that chances are, it’ll have a pretty high safest rating. However, unfortunately, that’s not always the case! Sure, a car may have received five stars in its Euro NCAP safety rating - but does that really mean you’ll be totally safe if you have a crash? And are there any cars that received such a low rating that you should just avoid them altogether?! There’s only one way to find out… Stick with Mat and check out his top 13 list!

Wow, thanks Matt, about time this info hit the fan. And new data shows the increased height from big SUVs override the safety designs for all 5 star prior rated current sedans. Thus Resulting in fail ratings across the board. The crash test side impact vehicle used from now on will have an increased height to match the large new SUVs. Astonishingly the Audi A8 about three years back (Matt showed how it works👍) designed an emergency feature that can detect impending side impact collision. The A8 utilizes the adjustable air suspension to instantaneously raise the one side of the car sIgnificantly prior to impact. Obviously the industry is well aware of this problem.

Small wonder about the Panda... that's an ancient design, long overdue for replacement. On a side note: When it was first tested in 2011, it got much better results (4 stars, 80% adult occupancy). Which only shows how much stricter the tests and how much safer the cars have become just in the last 10 to 11 years.
I started my driving-life in a (then brand new) VW Polo Mk II. I drove that car with my right foot welded to the floor most of the time and I had two rather hairy accidents in it. I already knew it at the time, but today it's even clearer to me how lucky I was to "survive" my stint with that car without any injury.
As for the Jimny and Wrangler: That's a pretty shameful result for such recent designs.

I still remember the following from a documentary on road safety when I was a teenager.
Imagine two basically identical cars except that:
One is completely safe; you can have absolutely any accident in it and walk away unscathed.
The other is guaranteed to explode in a fireball if there is the slightest impact with another vehicle or obstacle.
    Would you drive them differently?
I suppose the point is, do 'safer cars' make us safer? Or do they just make us into less careful drivers?
Frankly I'm amazed at just how much protection we get from the 'worst' car, the Panda. I grew up with cars like the classic Mini and the Renault 4!

hi matt, with the old fiat panda (up to 2012 ish) the 4x4 was built differently to the the regular car with steel frames behind the bumpers which i don't think was on the regular panda. So the 4x4 was quite sturdy. I tested this unintentionally and true enough there was a steel frame and it suffered very little damage. Is there still a difference between a standard panda and a 4x4?

Drive carefully in anything. Back in the 80's I was a test driver and my boss at the time always told me the safest car was one where there was a sharpened spike sticking out of the steering wheel pointing at your chest and a fuel tank fitted on the front bumper with a detonator in it that went off if you hit anything above 5 mph. We were testing ABS and other safety aids at the time for companies like Volvo and the problem is every safety improvement just makes the driver more reckless and they think they are invulnerable. Yes we need safe cars but we also need safe drivers as the nut behind the wheel is the biggest problem.

Remember Iam from south Africa so in this place we have cars and we also do many accidents so this is an impotent documentary for us to watch. Most people here use a seatbelt so we don't need fancy thinks such as a hairbag or pedestrians and also the accidents are mostly drunk people so when they crash they often feel no pain and wake up on the hospital feeling fine. When the taxi minibus crashes it is a bad accident because many people get hurt or worse and those are some of the worst accidents but in cars we feel safer so we don't worry about other things. Please accept my thanks mister Mat Watson your are the beast presenter we have met so far.
