  • Simple Route Planning using PredictWind, OpenCPN, Navionics, and TZ iBoat.
This is a short episode to illustrate how I use PredictWind with other charting and navigation apps including OpenCPN on the MacBook plus Navionics and TZ iBoat on the iPhone.
PredictWind calculates and recommends routes based on multiple weather models (e.g. GFS, EMCWF, PWG, PWE) and incorporates your boat's polars (sailing performance characteristics). The PredictWind route can be exported for a selected weather model. That route can then be imported into the charting/navigation software of your choice.

Hello, I wonder if you would go over again how you interfaced your Raymarine instruments with your B & G Zeus MFD? I can’t find your original reply. I am trying to connect my Zeus to my Raymarine using the Raymarine seatalk 1 to seatalk ng but I don’t seem to be getting any data into my Zeus with the Nema 2000 cable. When I go to the network function on the Zeus I do see packets coming across. But when I use the search for devices function I only see position and maybe one other variable coming across. Does your Zeus show all devices if you do a search for devices? Any advice and or diagrams you could share would be much appreciated. Let me know if it’s possible to talk off-line if possible. Thanks again

Hey Larry - drop me an email: captain@keeldragger.com. I am bridging Seatalk 1 to NMEA 2k (and wifi) via Yacht Devices NMEA 2000 Wi-Fi Router YDNR-02.

Which of these tools are free?

OpenCPN is free on desktop and gets you the noaa vector and raster charts. Android version is cheap. Navionics and TZ iBoat charge for charts-$20 per year or so depending on which ones you get. PredictWind has a free tier but you need a paid subscription for weather routing.

Thanks man. Navionics is one of the few apps i pay for. Had assumed the first route planner was gonna give me sticker shock.
