Just to share the story - this was back in the day where we had 56K dial-up. I waited six hours for one trailer to load, screamed at my dad to come watch with me, and I just remember being blown away by seeing the grass moving as the CGI ships moved along the battlefield. At the time, that was very much "Holy shit you can -do- that?" My dad got me a Darth Maul standup that Christmas and I could never put it up in my room because it was just a liiiittle to creepy in the dark.
This is also the week a stray dog came to my door that we named Chewie. She lived until 2014.
So even if the movie is pretty bleh overall, there are some really good things with it. And that's not touching how the use of CGI and Lucasfilm's experimentation with effects became Hollywood standards.

The separation from the rest of the series is exactly why I liked PM.
I really liked the movie being a "a glimpse at the galaxy in peacetime."
It's only movie where you see the Jedi actually being the Monk-Cops they're meant to be. It gives you an idea of how radical a change the Clone Wars became.

I think the biggest problem with TPM, and the reason it was so hated when it released, is that they were advertising it to existing Star Wars fans, when really it's a kids' movie and back then all the Star Wars fans were teenagers or older--way too old to enjoy TPM. They really hyped that movie to death, too, so they really were setting themselves up for a huge backlash.
Actually, that's more the problem with how it was released. The actual problem with TPM is that George needed someone to help him write and direct, but apparently he approached three different directors and they all turned him down because it would have been too much pressure trying to live up to the phenomenon that Star Wars had become, so he directed it himself.
Yeah, watching them all these years later, they're still nowhere near as good as the OT, but at least they got made--back then we didn't think we were EVER getting any more Star Wars movies. And on the bright side, they laid the groundwork for Clone Wars, Rebels, Bad Batch, Mandalorian, Boba Fett, and more!

I was born in 99, but I remember one of my first favorite movies was phantom menace, adored it to death. It’s sad to see how those actors were treated

I am 30 years older than you & when I saw Phantom Menance, I knew it was the unfiltered vision of Lucas- his true homage to the Flash Gordon serials. I was actually far more disappointed by Attack Of The Clones. I agree also that the Prequels were flawed. But they were also chock full of world building & vision that the Sequels never even approached except by aping the OT.

What really hurt the prequels is that we all had our own predisposed idea of how Anakin became Vader. If they had released the movies in order, we would have had so much more involvement in the story as we learned about this random little kid was seen as a potential Jedi candidate, and eventually his downfall, we cue the idea that Anakin becomes Vader, ending the movie without actually showing him, and as we see him for the first time in A New Hope, we finally feel the power he has. That also allows the dramatic irony that Luke doesn't know who Vader is, to have that real impact of him finally realizing it. Granted that surprising twist is iconic, but if we had it pay out chronologically, it would have so much more impact.

I definitely felt burned by the prequels, but I've come to really appreciate them. Especially Revenge of the Sith, which is a very complex film.

Star Wars fan did the same thing when they harassed Kelly Marie Tran, the actress that played Rose Tico in The Last Jedi. You can dislike a movie and even dislike an actor/actress but you’re not allowed to bully them until they contemplate suicide or even leave the film industry. Sadly Star Wars fans I’ve found are so toxic that I refuse to say I’m a Star Wars fan cos I refuse to be lumped in with them
this is late but, don't be afraid to admit you're a fan of ANYTHING because of the actions of a few people that identify with you. It's a big world, lot of people. Be confident with who you like, be unapologetically yourself. If someone isn't experienced enough to separate individuals from a mob, they need some time before communicating in a global format like the internet.
I've had a love/meh relationship with ep 1. I think part of the problem was me filling in the backstory in my head during the gap between the OT and PT and how jarring the movie was to my head cannon. Still, it's my favorite of the prequels and now I appreciate its ambitious scale that must have been daunting g for Lucas to undertake. Great job.

I still remember going to the opening week of each of the prequels with like 15 members of my family. No matter what you think of the prequels you have to acknowledge that they were made with love and care for the story. in my opinion the worst and most cringe scene in attack of the clones is still better than 95% of the fan films Disney made. I love this movie, when i watched It for the First Time i was a Little kid waiting to Watch episode 7, there was a Channel that only Aired star wars movies before Ep 7 and Ep 1 was the second One i watched After 4, i Just loved maul and the podracing, also i used to play the complete saga on iPad and episodes 1 and 4 were the only ones i had and i played them over and over

The thing that really elevates The Phantom Menace for me is the fact that it used a lot of actual practical effects and sets when compared to the other prequels. It still has all the bad acting, bad writing, and nonsensical plot points, but the fact that it’s more than just actors greenscreened into a video game is what really makes it for me. It helps that the cg in Episode 1 is way better than the other two prequels.

I was 4 when this came out and it’s my earliest theater memories ever. My parents took me to see it like 3 times I swear, and as a kid I thought it was for me, which was weird because I wasn’t like super super into it, but now that I’m older, I realize it was just my dad wanting to see it over and over again lol I also got a lot of badass Ep.1 toys, man what a time

When I watched Phantom Menace for the first time, I was around eight. It was the first Star Wars movie I had ever seen and I decided I was not going to watch any more of them. It took me five years to watch the rest of them.
So, basically I had the opposite experience. But hey! That just makes it more interesting to hear what the experiences of someone who felt the opposite way were like.

1999 was also when lego star wars became a thing, and in addition to the pod racing game there was a phantom menace game that was really good as well, so as a 12 year old kid all of those coming together made it so fun, even with its faults, its still fun, I had just seen the special edition 2 years prior as well, so kid hype was there, and CGI was so new it was fascinating to watch jar jar just on a technical level, always loved the pod race scene, my only gripe with George is not being cool about the 'unfinished' 'original' version, he should just have them both available like how Blade Runner, LOTR, Alien and all the rest have both theatrical and extended versions available
I just watched it again from my original Lucas era Blu-ray box set in my huge TV. Don't remember when was the last time I watched any Star Wars related thing. Probably it's been years... After we saw so many shitty product from Disney, I decided to stay away from that garbage. But lately I heard about new shows, returning the prequel era actors etc. and decided to start again. I have to say, Episode I is a masterpiece for me now. I know it's not perfect but It was way better than I remembered. First of all, it was FUN! I really enjoyed while I watching it again. It felt like I'm watching Star Wars! 24 years later! And this is the thing that Disney never gives after Rogue One.

I rmember the 6 months before episode 1's release all the video game magaziines I read were losing their shit with hype. Nintendo Power, Electronic Gaming Monthly and Gamepro were loaded with articles reviewing old games and showing previews for Star Wars Battle For Naboo(A hidden gem playing in the same style as the Rouge Squadron games).

Let's be real, we don't have to dance around the fact these prequels are better looked at now, because Disney made those terrible sequel movies that... Really makes you miss George Lucas as the director behind these films.
Also, midichlorians aren't actually how a person obtains the force themselves at all, but instead is more of a micro-organism that is attracted to those sensitive to the force, and because of that, yes, it's a tool for discovering how powerful Jedi and Sith are. I honestly was never bugged by it, because I understand how it was explained, and thus never thought it was boiled down to an X-Men genetic lottery instead.
Yeah for me the medichlorians filled in some holes to explain what the force is, or how the characters communicate with it.

To this day, the Phantom Menace is my favorite of the prequels (There was even a time I said it was my favorite Star Wars Movie period). I saw it at a young age and was enamored by the visuals, I thought Jar Jar was funny and the final battle was was the most epic thing I had seen at that time. I remember saying Attack of the Clones was my favorite because "cool looking stormtroopers, but good guys now", but looking back, I that was the only part I wanted to see, the rest of the movie was boring, anikin didnt do anything except mushy romance, and was basically a completely different character from the first one. I didn't even see episode 3 till years later in my teens, and I honestly felt nothing from that movie. I loved the Clone Wars Tv show to death, but always noiced how very different the tone felt compared to the movies. I though it weird all the things they added that where never brought up in the live action movies (obviously because the show came after, duh). That was the start of my critical view of Star Wars.
Getting involved with online communities, I quickly learned the disdain for the prequels. I subsequently got caught up in the hate and felt obligated to rage over their awfulness. I convinced myself that the prequels "killed Star Wars" that the character Jar Jar was the worse than a Nazi, and Gorge Lucas wanted Star Wars fans to suffer. I felt that way up until the Force Awakens.
I had believed that The Force Awakens would "save Star Wars" and make Gorge regret he ever sold it. But when those credits rolled, I found I didn't really like the movie. _It was fine, maybe I just had to see it again?_ I delved deeper into online video essays explaining why the movie was the worst thing, how it "killed their childhoods, and murdered their dogs" and my melancholy turned to hatred. "They just copy pasted A New Hope!!! Those Hacks, those frauds, INSULTING MY INTELLIGENCE"...
I obsessively watched and rewatched every video essay I could find hating on Star Wars, looking for every single flaw I could to pick it apart, looking for any little thing to get fuming about. The Last Jedi released and I saw it, and with the way the movie wrapped up, It just felt like a weird conclusion. Like there was no direction or plan for the story (and well ther wasn't really lol). But I also felt that same melancholy from the Force Awakens, I didn't actively hate it... untill....
Big surprise the community I frequented despised the move, they _loathed_ they blamed the movie for starting ww3 and killing baby seals. They waged a war in discussing how this movie was literally the worse thing ever made, how the devil would run in fear from it, because how bad the plot was, and how it treated the characters. I of course let the hate flow though me as well...
I found the Mr. Plinkets video analyzing the movie. I watched it. I watched it again. I watched all his other reviews on the Star Wars movies. I let the Hate burn at my insides, "how could they do this to my Star Wars" "Star Wars is stupid" "F U Disney" "F U Gorge" "YOU PEOPLE RUINED STAR WARS"... I had let the hate consume me... I was grieving for "death" of Star Wars.
In my rewatching fo the Mr. Plinket prequel review (for the 40th time or something) I ended up clicking on "The Making of the Phantom Menace behind the scenes video". Much of the footage I had seen referenced in the Plinket review before, but I had never sat down and watched the behind the scenes before then. Learning about the inner working of the filming, the casting the set design, all the work that went into making the movie. I began to realize something. The fact that they were all just movies, they didn't "ruin my childhood". Were they amazing movies? Not really, but thinking back, _I thought they were amazing when I was a kid._
I watched all the behind the scenes for the rest of the movies, and rewatched all the video essays I could, to try and recapture the adrenaline rush that I got from "hating Star Wars", I watched over and over, memorizing all the ways I could pick apart the movies, but something else happened instead.... I was enamored not with how "awful" the movies were, but the craft that went into making them. Even if the movie isn't great, learning about what went into the process of creating the story, and leaning how the story could be better if minor adjustments where taken into consideration. Learning the _do's and don't's_ of story telling, and how to write compelling characters. Suddenly I no longer hated Star Wars, but loved it again. The Rise of Skywalker released and I laughed and how terrible the pacing and story were, but I was angry no longer. I had reached acceptance. Balance with the force, if you will lol. I looked back on the community at the time and release of the prequels and how they too went through stages of greif, because they had built up this expectation of Star Wars in their minds. They wanted to love the movie, they forced themselves to love the movie, they hated the movie, they loved to hate the movie. History was repeating itself for me now with the sequel trilogy. I understood that the Phantom Menace is flawed, but reflected back on the time I enjoyed it. And my new found appreciation for the film.
So many small things make the Phantom Menace enjoyable for me, the locals, the music, and the film photography (something about the look of the movie, it being filmed on... well you know, actual film), the child like wonder of Anakin, and him being whisked off on this adventure into the cold outer space and distant worlds. The battle droids looked and sounded cool, and were actually still pretty menacing (rip OOM-9 Battledroid commander). Darth Maul hunting down the Jedi, felt so spooky as a kid. All these small things make me really appreciate the movie. At this point in time it's like a comfort movie for me, It's always on TV around the holidays and it just take me back to simpler times.
I indeed, still have my issues with the movie. Those video essays make many valid points, and I also get great comfort from watching those videos, and seeing their funny jokes and over analyzation of the characters, and wondering what could have been. Star Wars is many things to many people, and for me its three distinct parts. The original trilogy, is the story I cherish, the Phantom menace is the fun sci-fi adventure set in that universe, and the Clone Wars has brilliant character development that I just gobble up. Each is a different flavor of Star Wars that I don't necessarily consider to be all one of the whole, but I appreciate each for what they do right. I like to keep them separate to that extent in my mind because of what each one represents, and the tonal feeling of all the different Star Wars iterations. Nothing can ever match that feeling of wonder I got when I saw A New Hope for the first time, or the dread I felt at the end of Empire Strikes back, because I already had those wonderful experiences. There's no point in trying to recreate some something that was already perfect to begin with.
I like to hear people talk about Star Wars and use their imaginations, I get much joy from it. And in the end, isn't that what matters most? Be one with the force, my friends, see ya around kid ;)

i can tell you when this movie came out same with the mummy etc, being at the drive in was awesome!!! you cannot recreate us the children running shooting pretending our cap guns were blasters and then playing with lightsabers. all the while really good cheeseburgers and arcade simpsons games and mortal kombat. ah the days georgetown drive in going strong after 72 years.

I'm not even disagreeing, watching something as a child makes it so much easier to ignore the stuff that you groan at as an adult.
For instance, Final Fantasy 8 as a kid was the coolest fucking shit ever. I was a kid when it came out and it honestly was one of the best looking games of that year.
When I grew up and watched the Spoony reviews I was like "O-Oh yeah! That game suckssss." And objectively 90% of what he said about the game was true.

I remember i had two cups with a figure on top it was jarjar and the other was anakin of course i took my sisters thats why i had two 😢 now that i remember i have to ask my mother what happened to them she also has that disney fantasia 2000 glass collection set from mc donalds that was also nice quality too bad they dont do promos like that anymore now things get cheaper and worse quality but hey at least we have smartphones right.
