  • In this video I show you how I built and painted this Operation Merkur Crete ww2 diorama for my Dragon Models Fallschirmjager in 1:35th scale. (In the first video of this series I built and painted these.)
    I here show you how you can build a base from styrofoam using a hot wire foam cutter and other materials, and also paint and weather it. Details like the tree were also built from scratch.
    I hope you find this video usefull, I would love to hear your thoughts and looking forward to your constructive criticism.

    The diorama base and terrain are fantastic. The details are amazing. My only criticism would be the color of the uniforms that the German Fallschirmjagers are painted as. The correct German Fallschirmjager uniform they wore during the invasion of Crete in 1941, was pale fieldgreen colored jump smocks, blue-grey Luftwaffe issued tunic, medium field grey trousers, and dark greenish-grey helmets. Those are the correct colors for 1941 Crete. The German Fallschirmjagers didn't start wearing beige/ochre colored uniforms until N. Africa and splinter pattern camo jump smocks until Sicily/Italy campaigns. Afterall the German Fallschirmjagers were originally nicknamed 'The Green Devils". Take it from someone who served in the 82nd Airborne who knows his history... especially regarding Paratroopers. 🙂 Other than that, your diorama of Crete is spot on. Cheers!

      Thank you very much, really happy you like my work. And yes, I am not 100% accurate in my works, I sometimes choose look or practical things over being completely accurate. But with the splintercamo I have to disagree. I checked it online before and I found sources which said they started using the splinter camouflage with the Crete invasion, the pattern itself existed since the 1930s. Not that it does matter much now, but I am sure about that😅

I've several dioramas at various build stages and am on here looking for ideas etc , what I enjoy the most is when a model , vignette and/or diorama draws you in and captures your imagination which is exactly the effect and impact your work has . A wonderful job! Just a few observations because as a Greek I can see that some things are wrong, and it's a real pitty for such a beautiful diorama.
    1) Yes, there are cactus in Crete, but not so many and not these species (are mostly aloe).
    2) The colors on the olive tree are correct, but not its shape. It should be at least half the height and without so much low branching if it is a domesticated tree, or with much more low branching if wild.
    3) The drystone (ξερολιθιά) representation is very nice, but since these structures are to protect the arable land, its interior could not be full of stones and cacti (unless, of course, the arable land has long been abandoned).
    Congratulations again on your beautiful work, and sorry if I came across as "pedantic"

    • @biberhunter_scale_models
      @biberhunter_scale_models  Před rokem

      Thank you very much, happy you like it in general. And yes, I see that there are things that you as Greek notice are incorrect, and i totally understand your problem here😅 it's just that I didn't do as much research on vegetation as I maybe should have done, and as I tried to create a landscape that would pass a s Crete without too much effort in research 😁 it's possibly like Americans think all Germans are wearing leather pants😅 it's too late now to change things now, but I will keep that in mind to prepare myself better for future projects 👍
