  • With an illustrious career in media spanning over 50 years, veteran Journalist and author Alok Mehta speaks to Barkha Dutt in the 25th Episode of our podcast 'Inside Out'.
Mehta speaks about covering Indian politics, publishing stories that led to death threats- in one case an armed gunman barging in his office looking for him, in another a threat to mow him down by a truck. He also recalls the time when his Times of India printing press was set on fire by RJD supporters after he broke the Lalu Yadav fodder scam story.
From Lalu to Yashwant Sinha, from Vajpayee to Modi, Mehta has seen it all. He says "Media won't die" but also exposes how the RSS, BJP & Congress tried to control not only the media narrative but the media itself over the years.

    Barkha are you free
Pls do debate on following topic if you are free
Article 25 says freedom of conscience ,freedom to practice religion, freedom to profess religion is guuarnteed but restriction of subject to public order and Morality. Of course what is morality and what is conscience is not defined
Now hadeesh of islam is that who ever leaves islam is to be killed, murtad ki saza maut as per haddesh in inslam
So now my question is islamic scripture against freedom of conscience of article 25 as it's not moral to kill someone if he just leaves islam as per thier books
Hence islam should not be allowed to be propogated or allowed to be propogated.
I do not know the answer as of now but need to do research on it.

I didnt much understand what he is saying. But respectfully I would say that he do not understand about what media is showing nowadays. As far as I know journalist work is to ask question to the government not always appreciating the government. Government spend so much on promoting there schemes and appreciating themselves. Why journalist need to do the same. Also, many corporates have taken over media channels and newspapers. Thats why we are not seeing news of common people in the country. If you want to promote government then STOP saying that you are journalist. I know previously media might not be free but nowadays its too much. Everytime why we look back history when someone criticize, same goes to current government and media. Do we really want to be same like before or rather we need to correct our mistakes which we have done before?
India voted for current government to work on the mistakes that previous government did rather than pointing out everytime what previous government did. Please grow up.

We can remove our over critical attitude because in such a huge country with so many languages lifestyles and political beliefs and even problems inherited from past , any government can rule stably only if it takes things in its stride . Compromise, adapting is vital for survival. Look we are rising. Accept.

@@Sadhana3662 I simply dont understand what critical is about communal violence going on in this country.....I think you have accepted the current setup going on in this country....Its your wish not mine.....If something wrong in going on in this country, myself as citizen is duty to speak up.....not only to give vote to the goovernment......
