    One of my prime objectives when writing music for my band Revocation is to try to push the envelope and come up with sounds, ideas, chord patterns, progressions and riffs that have been rarely explored within the thrash metal genre.
    A good way to do this is to use seventh chords, which are rarely heard in metal. This month, I'd like to demonstrate a few cool ways one can use one particularly cool- and tense-sounding seventh chord in heavy, thrash-style riffs.
    Of the different types of seventh chords-major-seven, dominant-seven, minor-seven and what have you-the one that appeals to me most is minor-seven-flat-five (m7b5), also known as half-diminished-seven.

    Love this. Honestly, this morning was thinking I’m having trouble using m7b5 in my prog rock and metal writing, then bam! Dave’s got it!

    For the theory dummies, the minor 7 flat 5 chord is also referred to as a half-diminished chord.

    I find this man's teaching technique very distracting. Every video I've seen him do, he plays in-between speaking like every other word. I just can't follow it. I think the material is good material. The teaching just isn't for me.

    • @CT-8024
      @CT-8024 Před 10 lety +1

      Brian-Keith Bradley they predate electrics, they really have been around for hundreds of years, but some players make me cringe playing them too much. Like pedals or sweep picking. We cannot all be AC/DC, some players just stop learning and that is the worst thing you can do. I have to mix it up a bit or everything sounds stale.

    • @KillSwitch66627

      Jaymzofsteel First you complain they are a "thing" and then you say they have been around for hundreds of years? So why wouldn't they still be a "thing"?

    • @gingersnap4338
      @gingersnap4338 Před 10 lety +5

      Just because a guitar has more than 6 strings doesn't mean that they will just chug. It simply means that they have an extended range in which to play. I will admit that some bands have used the extended range instruments incorrectly by djent or chugging, but you can't hate on an instrument because some people play it wrong.

    Dissonant sounding garbage.

    • @ultrahero2115
      @ultrahero2115 Před 9 lety +27

      If it was garbage, musicians wouldn't have taken the time to assign it a name and give it rules. Great composers like Stravinsky wouldn't frequently incorporate it if it was just garbage. You can't deny that dissonance creates a mood/atmosphere of tension and if that's what a writer is going for, why not? It's used in everything from modernist orchestral to jazz to mathcore. I love dissonance just as much as consonance, as of late. Just because it's not your cup of tea doesn't make it garbage.

    • @KickflipGnasty
      @KickflipGnasty Před 9 lety +18

      He knows chords and theory better than any metal player around. Dissonance is a part of metal and he uses it brilliantly.
