In this video, we talk about the the intricate cultural tapestry and complex history of Manipur in this insightful video. From its origins shaped by trade and religion to its evolution through tribal merging, Manipur's journey is a captivating tale of resilience and struggle. Learn about the rich diversity fostered by intra-clan marriages and the influences of groups like the 'Kukis' on Manipuri identity.
We discuss the tumultuous past of the region marked by British interference and the subsequent loss of sovereignty to the Indian Dominion. Explore the roots of insurgency and the ongoing struggle for territorial sovereignty, including the emergence of armed groups like the Manipur National Front Liberation (MNFL) and the Nagas' quest for autonomy.
The conversation moves into the socio-political issues facing Manipur, including tax disputes with the Kukis, influx of migrants, and the impact of the Myanmar crisis. Understand the demand for Scheduled Tribe Status and the unrest fueled by armed groups, alongside environmental challenges such as deforestation.

The truth don't favour any side. It's about how both sides react and respond to the truth.
If truth truly did prevail, the conflict would've ended a long time back. But the conflict carries on because both sides are not satisfied with the truth and want to create their own desired outcomes.
That's how every conflict escalates similarly everywhere. Israel-Palestine is in the same predicament.
We're at a point where the truth has become blurred. Both sides got blood on their hands, which is why the hatred and fighting never ends.

As a mainlander, this has been quite eye opening. Politics aside, it seems the govt has failed to understand the north east as a whole. I appreciate Dr. Bhagat's opinion (especially recognising his own biases). And as a dilliwallah, i think it is time that the national narrative shifts from a delhi centric approach. Great job Abhijit, I've watched a couple of episodes and I like how you allow your guest to talk uninterrupted just guiding them along.

Seeing the potential of Andaman and Nicobar on goods/oil transport canal/route, Indian Government (PM Nehru signed it) gave away kabaw valley without any discussion withe natives and Manipuris.

Sometimes you can be blunt.... Some(not all) officers of the country's Armed forces are conniving with the immigrants against the indigenous people to have a good control over the insurgency situation out here. Some even helping them to rewrite history to validate their claims. It's high time the central Govt look into the matter as maximum indigenous civilians doesn't support insurgents out here. However, they've been victimized because of the incompetancies of those officers. This has become one reason for the anti India feelings amongst the indigenous folks.

Its a beautiful piece giving complete perspective of historical faultlines leading to the present day crisis. I have 1 suggestion. All of us may not find time for long podcasts. Also, your speakers having wealth of knowledge will speak for long. May be, you may consider giving a 5-10 min gist in the end. It'll offer 2 choices to your viewers: see the whole podcast or listen to your 10 min brief or summary. Thanks

Yaithibis, Lois who are chakpa community and Meitheis are the actual manipuris. The musalmaan who are pangals are not manipuris until early 20th century. Today all of them have already assimilated to Meitei community. These references is seen in the book 'The Meitheis' Authored by TC Hodson published 1905.

First thing we should do is learn our history with open mind and teach our children to be proud of the Meitei culture, its language and its history and to love this land.
Otherwise Meitei will just fight each other like before for money and power and Metei will either become Chritian or Muslim or Woke and the spirit of being a Meitei will become extinct.

48:22 Was there any clashes between the Kukis and the Nagas living in the South?
    Short Answer: Yes.
"As per the accounts of Sir Robert Reids, the Kuki mercenaries massacred about 176 persons of Goitang village and total of about 76 houses were completely razed to ashes."
Goitang is a village in Khoupum, Noney District.
People there still narrates vividly of the massacre. The Kukis butchered the villagers in the dead of the night when the villagers were fast asleep in their morung after a day of festivities which included cultural dances, cultural sports and drinking of rice beer.
It is said that wooden pestles used for pounding rice, usually about 5-10 kilos heavy, were floating from the blood that flowed from the massacre.
Many of the Rongmei villages towards South of Khoupum valley were occupied by the Kukis.

My brother, please don't share half baked stories. The Kuki Naga clash was equally tragic and cruel for both. No point in opening past wounds, we should be healing it instead. The relationship between the two except for some land disputes have been very progressive in the past 10 to 20 years. The reason Manipur is such a mess is because everyone keeps pointing their finger at each other.
