    This is not the only way to do this. There are many ways but this is the way I was taught so it's the way I prefer.

    I thought I was going to learn how to calm down my living pet insects, but this will prove quite useful once they reach the taxidermy stage.

    Vinegar prevents mold. So does salt.

      So just any type of salt? And in the crystal version that it comes in when bought from store? For the insects?

      salt will rust your insect pins and leave white spots on the insects

    To relax coleopteras, I put them directly in between warm and hot water for few minutes.
    To avoid mold, I use alcohol (white) vinegar

    • @michellewalker8792
      @michellewalker8792 Před 2 lety +3

      @@missymihlfread8832 this has not been my experience, sometimes there are tiny tears in the membrane from the dehydrating process and the wings can turn translucent when they come in contact with water -that dries out eventually but it absorbs resin too

    • @vincentbernier7808
      @vincentbernier7808 Před rokem

      for butterflies you should avoid direct contact with water or moisture. You can place your insect on a mesh above wet/hot towels in your closed box. For bigger butterflies (also work with other insects), you can inject water inside them with a syringe.

  • @backyardbugcollector6319
    @backyardbugcollector6319 Před 6 lety +3

    Adding that last paper towel on top is a bad idea if you are working with fragile (most) insects. Fine for the stout beetles seen here though.

    • @pastelrainbow2458
      @pastelrainbow2458 Před 3 lety

      I seen a video where someone fold paper towel around a butterfly, dampens it, puts it in the fridge for a couple days, and then gently unfolded it and the butterfly (which is delicate) wasn't harmed at all. Looked perfect
