Kia Grand Sedona (Carnival) Review - Best Family Car?

  • Growing up as the oldest of four siblings, I was often in charge of family adventures. Our chariot was a Toyota Condor - you might remember it as that fairly dull-looking family car which was around for a generation or two, starting at the turn of the millennium.
But the Condor was based on the Hilux (seriously) and therefore was virtually indestructible. My father’s philosophy on car maintenance is “fix it when it breaks” and so this poor car endured mile after mile without ever knowing the comforting touch of a mechanic.
It clocked up 250 000km in 5 years and just before my dad sold it, I took it for a drive, and I was quite honestly flabbergasted at how solid it still felt.
And so my bar for family cars has been set quite high, which is why I’m delighted to report that the Kia Grand Sedona is one of the best I’ve ever tested.
While I can’t comment on the car’s longevity, it does feel properly well made. This is a feeling you get given the quality of the interior build, but it’s also down to how the car feels; the new Kia is made using new manufacturing techniques which have increased the car’s shell strength immensely.
The model I was driving was top of the range but even so, the features and creature comforts were extensive. I’ve tried to cover as many as possible in the video.
And lastly, the engine in the Grand Sedona is a peach. Loads of torque from the 2.2 litre diesel is coupled with real world consumption figures that would embarrass many a small family hatchback. Again, I go into more detail in the video.
I dont't even had kids yet but if I did, it would be a real pleasure to cart them around in something like the Grand Sedona. Perhaps it won’t outlast a Toyota Condor, but I can assure you it is significantly more comfortable.
Did I mention it looks really good too?

I drive a 2015 3.3V6 Grand Sedona, it multiplies everything in this review. Business jet during the week and ultimate touring family car during weekends and those long holidays. Unfortunately Kia SA isn't bringing the facelift V6 to South Africa, very expensive. They don't want to compete with Merc prices 😂😂😂. I will import mine from Australia when it's time to update.

It is a shame that Kia doesn't sell as much in South Africa and they produce really good quality cars.

Thanks for this. Looking forward to the review of the 2019 facelift SXL.

Great family Car. Not to mention that you don't need to recline the seat to get to the 3rd row and you can simply walk through. Wish it was available in the UK.

You have to do a comparison with it's direct competition, the Chrysler Voyager (For the same price).

Damn this thing is expensive!!! But I really love it. Would I take it instead of taking the V class? Yes, don't judge me, it's a personal choice. It must be fully speced though.

I did exactly that Otsile in 2015, took the top spec V6 and changed sound system with a smart remote controlled head unit upfront with independant DVD screens in every seat for my 4 grandkidz. There's nothing like it on the road, 180k km later. Absolute dream family car.

A top spec Camry goes for about the same price as a Grand Carnival here in the Philippines. Both obviously have very different purposes in life but you do get incredible value with the Kia. Yes yes I know one is a Toyota that'll run forever and the other not too long ago was known for making really shitty vehicles but I imagine Kia makes good cars now. I myself would get the Kia if the two for whatever reason became the only vehicles avaliable in the market.

700k for Kia and it doesn't even have a large touch screen with sat nav? This is ridiculous. I would also expect rear seat entertainment systems and some other luxuries and safety features like self parking, surround view cameras, radar guided cruise control, automatic braking, blind spot monitoring, lane keeping assist....Where is all this Kia? Haha...700k? You can keep it. No thanks!

+SDav21 I fully agree with you! 700k for this and it's a kia? No way will I pay this if I had the cash to do so.

+SDav21 you'd have to do a direct comparison between it, the Caravelle & Merc V-Class & you will find that its the most competitively priced vehicle in this class, it actually trumped said vehicle's in Car mags latest shootout.
