The S1/S2 is a type of metro/light rail train from the Amsterdam metro system, operated by GVB and was build by BN in Belgium in 1990 for the (closed)Amstelveen light rail line 51, but is now used on lines 50 and 51.

@Aatos H: To be honest, the ones in the video sound quite similar to Helsinki's M100 ... but Helsinki is still better (I can say this, I've been there xD)

S3/M4 has a much higher sound, meaning that they use IGBT as IGBT has a much higher switching frequency than GTO, meaning it has the ability to make a much higher sound. I think S1/S2 uses GTO because the switching frequency (which is what causes the sound) is much lower. However, not every sound you hear from a train is to do with the transistor technology; while the first pitch does, the sounds themselves you hear after that are to do with how the motor is pulsed i.e. the VVVF drive pulsing out an artificial AC wave from a DC supply which is your 750v third rail. These are so-called 'sneltrams' built by the Belgian company BN during the 90's for the Ringlijn when the word 'metro' was taboo in Amsterdam after the commotion surrounding the cut and cover building and demolition during the 70's for the construction of the first east line. These trams are also smaller in width than the metro trains proper. Originally the stations on the Ringlijn had platforms with no gap to the narrower Sneltrams. But after platforms on the Ringlijn were adapted to make it possible for the wider metro trains to use them, the Sneltrams had to be equipped with a cm-wide step edge running across the lower edge of the carriages to bridge the gap between the platform edge and the doors. I'm not entirely sure, but I believe these trains have dual electricity caption system - a pantographe for overhead wire supply like classic tram lines, and third rail caption device for classic metro line supply.
S1 and S2 were built for the Amstelveenlijn.
TheMexxodus wrong, these BN sneltrams were built for the amstelveenlijn in the early 90’s. The CAF sneltrams were built in 1996/1997 for the Ringlijn and there were only four of them that had a big pantograph and rail brakes to drive on the Amstelveenlijn.

@@gabrielbrouwer Just for clarification. The CAF trams that were built for the Ringlijn, are these the same width as the S1 and S2 BN trams? And were the platforms of the Ringlijn later modified to accomodate the M1 metro trains?
@@TheMexxodus Yes they are the same width as the S1/S2 and the platforms were modified in 2000 to fit the older trains. And you are also right about the Ringlijn being called a sneltram because metro was taboo .

Dit geluid blijft kippenvel, gewoon top. Als ik denk aan de Amsterdamse metro, dan denk ik aan dit geluid. Op de Amstelveenlijn was dit geluid niet weg te denken. ‘S avonds wanneer het buiten stil was, was dit altijd het enige karakteristieke geluid wat hoorbaar was: vanaf verre hoorde je de sneltrams al aankomen, een vertrouwd geluid in Amstelveen dat ik zeer mis. Net als het rinkelende bellen bij overwegen en de karakteristieke ‘ding-dong’ uit de beginjaren.
Er moet hoe dan ook een exemplaar bewaard blijven voor het Transport Museum in Nieuw-Vennep! Kunnen we met dit kanaal van liefhebbers geen petitie/actie voor opstellen Rail Public Transport? In Utrecht is door een petitie en lobby van liefhebbers één exemplaar van de Utrechtse tram onlangs bewaard gebleven voor het museum in Nieuw-Vennep. Anders ben ik bang dat alle exemplaren in 2021 naar de sloper gaan 😢😞
Ik ga er niet vanuit dat de S1/S2 zomaar helemaal gesloopt zal worden.
Hobbyisten vechten hier altijd voor dit hebben ze gedaan bij de SIG sneltrams van Utrecht en de Zilvermeeuw metro, dus de S1 S2 Sneltram daar zal zeker een exemplaar van bewaard worden.

Wat in Utrecht wel geholpen heeft heb ik begrepen is dat o.a. de petitie die was opgestart en aangeboden bij de gedeputeerde verkeer & openbaar vervoer bij de provincie Utrecht. Zou prachtig zijn als de BN S1/S2 bewaard blijven, want het blijft een uniek stukje techniek en ontwerp.

Best sound in New York was the R110as, which were the prototype for all of the current New Tech Trains here. They sounded awesome, and ran back in the 90's.

Ah yes, the classic R110A! The TTC in Toronto has a train with the same motors with the same sound albeit a little different. The train I'm talking about is the Bombardier T1 and has been in service for 23 years I believe.

Hebben jullie ook de indruk dat deze karren aan een soort tweede jeugd bezig zijn ? Ze zijn overal en lijken nu weinig storingen te hebben.
Misschien komt dat omdat ze alleen in metrobedrijf rijden en niet meer hoeven om te bouwen naar sneltram
@@RailPublicTransport De mankementen die bij mij bekend zijn (voornamelijk de S1-reeks) zijn: I, De Treeplanken! Konden door vastvriezen niet meer 2650mm breedte aannemen! Deze was nodig tussen VU - Poortwachter v.v.! Vandaar de periodieke pendeldiensten(per bus) tussen deze twee locaties! II, De Deuren! Deze moesten allemaal worden vervangen door een type die minder storingen teweegbracht! Dit gebeurde idem bij de "Stadsneefjes" (11G/12G)! III, De halteafroep ging in het begin ook niet altijd even goed! Dat was ook bij 'Blauw-Rood-Blauw' verticaal ook lang het geval! En niet eens met dìt materieel! IV, Het fenomeen dat een "conflictvrije" metro (in principe) kennismaakt met het overige verkeer! Aanrijdingen waren geen bijzonderheid...!

These trains are more trams than metros in my opinion, i.e. light rail... the M5s and the other series (how are they called? S2 or something?) look and sound more like a metro:)

No they are used on the other lines 50 and 51 to Isolatorweg and sometimes on 53 and 54
